SAM BOUGH RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1822 - 1878), RIDING ACROSS THE SANDS oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated 1860 framed image size 31cm x 61cm, overall size 45cm x 76cm Label verso: St. Helier Galleries Ltd., Jersey. Provenance: Christies, London, March 2011, label verso. Note: Considered to be one of the most influential and prolific Scottish landscape painters of the 19th century, Sam Bough RSA was a self-taught artist who spent much of his career working in Scotland. Born in 1822 in Carlisle, Bough settled in Manchester where he worked as a scene painter in the Theatre Royal. After moving to Glasgow he continued to paint in the evenings whilst working at the New Princes Theatre, eventually building enough success to move to painting full-time. Bough's reputation as a topographical and landscape painter grew during the 1850's and by the time he resettled in Edinburgh he had established himself as a successful landscape artist. Whilst living in the capital he created some of his most important paintings. At this point in the 1950s, artistically he was reaping the rewards of many years working and sketching outside, most particularly amongst the ships and shores of the Clyde, Forth and the Fife coast. He had trained his eye sketching from nature across the countryside of the north of England and Scotland. Now able to commit to painting full-time, he was prolific and successful, and in one year, 1859, he submitted seven paintings to the Manchester Institute and a further ten to the Royal Scottish Academy. With a relaxed approach to life, one story tells of him submitting ten canvases to an exhibition, nine fully realised and one completely blank. When questioned over the blank canvas, he indicated that the exhibition was not for another two weeks, so he had plenty of time to work it up! Bough was as successful a painter in both oils and watercolours, and was committed to depicting a wide variety of landscape views and effects, urban and rural, bright days and dark storms. However, there are specific locations and landscapes that Bough returns to regularly in his work; the hustle and bustle of harbours and coastal towns, with the distinctive Newhaven harbour a particular favourite and the hunting Forest of Cadzow, near Hamilton. Generally associated with views of Scotland, he did also create a series of Italian views. In general, his spontaneity, loose technique and interest in capturing fleeting atmospheric effects, particularly cloud formations and weather, establishes him as an important predecessor of the Scottish Impressionists, paving the way for the development towards a freer, plein air style.

A LARGE GILT-LACQUERED BRONZE FIGURE OF THE MEDICINE BUDDHA (BHAISAJYAGURU), MING DYNASTYChina, 1368-1644. A RARE SPINACH-GREEN JADE FIGURE OF A TIGER, SECOND HALF OF THE QIANLONG PERIODChina, c. 1760-1795. Carved from a large boulder, the tiger rests in a recumbent pose with its legs tucked beneath its body and its tail curling to the side. The body is neatly incised with thin stripes, and its face is well detailed with large round eyes, thick arched brows, and thin whiskers. The tiger bares its sharp teeth in a fierce snarl, wrinkling its face, and laying its ears back. The prominent, menacing claws are another distinct feature, clearly identifying the animal as the biggest and most dangerous of all felines, also known as 'Man Eater' in some cultures. The superbly polished stone of an even and remarkably pure deep spinach-green tone with few minute dark flecks and icy veins. Possibly Khotan jade.Provenance: French trade. Condition: Superb condition with minimal wear. The stone with few natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.Weight: 1,488.3 g Dimensions: Length 15.3 cm Prior to the Qianlong period, jade carvings in China were largely confined to small-sized items such as scholar's objects, pendants, plaques, and palm-sized vessels, due to the rarity of quality jade. Most jade quarries were a great distance from the capital and were outside the jurisdiction of the early Qing empire until the 1750s. In the middle of Qianlong's reign in 1759, the emperor expanded his rule into the Xinjiang territory while quelling the Dzungar Khanate and the Altishahr Khojas rebellions, making a large supply of jade material from the region available to the empire. After 1760, when the Kingdom of Yutian (modern-day Xinjiang province) was brought under Chinese influence, the fine raw jade boulders from that area were readily available to Chinese carvers. The region known as Khotan, now in Xinjiang province, is particularly famous for its fine nephrite jade. With these materials, and the encouragement of the emperor, the jade lapidaries of the second half Qianlong period were able to produce remarkable feats of carving. Large jade animal carvings represent some of the finest jade products of the early Qing dynasty, leading to the heights of achievement associated with the reign of the Qianlong emperor. Animals including tigers, horses, and elephants were popular, as were mythical beasts such as the qilin or the Buddhist lion.Tigers have been of great importance in Chinese culture since the earliest surviving records of Chinese history, with the character 虎 appearing on Shang-era oracle bones. In ancient China, the Siberian and Bengal tigers were common in the northeast and southwest respectively, and tigers figure prominently in Chinese myth, astrology, poetry, painting, and other fields. Most prominently, the tiger has long been regarded as a major symbol of masculine yang energy and the king of the animals.Literature comparison:Compare a related large spinach-green jade Buddhistic lion, 19.8 cm wide, date to the Qianlong period, formerly in the collections of R.C. Expected old wear, some losses and cracks, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, remnants of ancient pigments. Overall presenting remarkably well.Weight: 478.9 gDimensions: Height 24.3 cm Dancers, musicians, acrobats, and other entertainers were popular subjects for the numerous pottery figures buried in tombs. The Tang capital at Chang'an (present-day Xi'an) was cosmopolitan in character, with merchants from most parts of Asia trading there. Dancers and musicians were brought to the capital from central and southern Asia, and especially from the city states along the Silk Route. There was probably competition among the elite as to who had the more exotic musicians and dancers at any one time performing in their households. These ladies may not, however, represent foreigners, as their hair is dressed in Chinese fashion in the mode of the early eighth century, as seen in the wall paintings of the tomb of the Princess Yongtai (see Akiyama et al., Arts of China: Neolithic Cultures to the T'ang Dynasty. Sun Quan, Di Renjie, Fu Sheng, and Wu Zetian are named on their flanking cropped corners, alternating high and low, and an epithet for each written above their emblems, along with excerpts from their stories in the Wu Shuang Pu above and below each figure.Provenance: English trade. Condition: Very good condition with only minor wear and firing irregularities. The rim with a shallow chip.Weight: 3,161 g Dimensions: Height 38.9 cm Wu Shuang Pu ('Table of Peerless Heroes') by Jin Guliang is a book of woodcut prints, first printed in 1694, early on in the Qing dynasty. This book contains the biographies and imagined portraits of 40 notable heroes and heroines from the Han Dynasty to the Song Dynasty, all accompanied by a brief introduction and guided by a related poem in Yuefu style. The illustrations from the book were widely distributed and re-used, often as motifs on Chinese porcelain.Di Renjie (630-700), formally Duke Wenhui of Liang, was a Chinese politician of the Tang and Wu Zhou dynasties, twice serving as chancellor during the reign of Wu Zetian. He was one of the most celebrated officials of Wu Zetian's reign and was thus included in Wu Shuang Pu. He is depicted on this lot wearing polychrome robes with floral medallions.Fu Sheng (268-178 BC) was a Chinese philosopher and writer. He was a Confucian scholar of the Qin and Western Han dynasties of ancient China, famous for saving the Confucian classic Shangshu ('Book of Documents') from the book burning of the first Qin emperor. Fu Sheng is recognized as one of the most important Confucians of the Han Dynasty. He is often venerated in Confucian temples along with other sages, and has been a subject of many poems, essays, and paintings. He is depicted on this lot seated on a rock ledge and above him are his emblematic books.Wu Zetian (624-705) was the first and only female emperor in Chinese history. She subsequently founded and ruled the Wu Zhou dynasty of China from 690 to 705. She was the only female sovereign in the history of China widely regarded as legitimate. Under her 40-year reign, China grew larger, becoming one of the great powers of the world, its culture and economy revitalized, and corruption in the court reduced. She was removed from power in a coup and died a few months later. She is depicted on this lot wearing her imperial robes, and above her is Mount Song where her rule was legitimized during the Feng Shan.Sun Ce (175-200) was a Chinese military general, politician, and warlord who lived during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He was the eldest child of Sun Jian, who had found the Heirloom Seal of the Realm when his forces occupied the evacuated Han imperial capital of Luoyang, in the course of the campaign against Dong Zhuo, and later suffered a violent death during the Battle of Xiangyang when Sun Ce was only 16. Upon his father's death, Sun Ce inherited the seal and gave it to Yuan Shu so that he might lend him troops to take revenge for his uncle, who had been fighting Warlord Lu Kang. The young Sun Quan is depicted on this lot wearing heavy armor with a sheathed sword, holding a large axe, with the Heirloom Seal of the Realm painted above.Expert's note: The Heirloom Seal of the Realm, also known in English as the Imperial Seal of China, was a Chinese jade seal allegedly carved out of the Heshibi, a sacred piece of jade. The Seal can safely be described as the most important and valuable lost artifact in the world. The Seal was created in 221 BC, shortly after Qin Shi Huang unified China and established the Qin dynasty, China's first imperial dynasty. It then served as the imperial Chinese seal throughout the next millennium of Chinese history, and its possession was seen as a physical symbol of the Mandate of Heaven. The Heirloom Seal was subsequently lost around the end of the Tang dynasty or during the earlier Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period. Several seals have since been claimed as the lost Heirloom Seal, but none have held up under scrutiny.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Bonhams Edinburgh, 24 November 2011, lot 432 Price: GBP 3,125 or approx. A 'QIANJIANG CAI' ENAMELED 'LUSH FORESTS AND HIGH BAMBOO' PLAQUE, BY JIN PINQING (1862-1908)Expert's note: Qianjiang cai or 'pastel palette' enamels reflected the late Qing potter's increasing inability to produce the more technically demanding vibrant colors of the earlier High Qing or the later Republic period. To borrow a modern aphorism however, the determined late Qing artisans turned this 'bug' into a 'feature' - notably the dreamlike faintness of these colors became popular with the melancholy intelligentsia of the time and led to masterworks by the best, with Cheng Men (1833-1908) and Jin Pinqing (1862-1908), the painter of the present lot, being the most renowned. The rectangular plaque painted in orange, green, and blue tones with thinly applied enamels depicting a forest landscape with hills and mountains, bamboo groves and pine trees in the foreground. Two scholars sit conversing in a field while a third approaches them on foot, two houses with a tranquil river running beside it which disappears into the mountains. The plaque with a lengthy dedication written by Wang Fengchi (1824-1898), a scholar and official who was friends with Jin Pinqing and often collaborated with him on porcelain paintings.Inscriptions: Top center, titled 'Lush Forests and High Bamboo', signed 'written by Jin Pinqing', two seals. Top left, inscribed 'Some time ago in the Yijin Studio in the capital, I saw an ink painting by the master Wang Jian from Taicang with a lush forest. The landscape was quite unique. The [present] painting was painted for me by Pinqing in the style of porcelain paintings from Zhushan. The paintings complement each other. The ink style is so gentle and mild like a breath of air. The [original] painting was done in the Spring of the Year of Dingchou [corresponding to 1877] in the third year of the Guangxu era. I am very touched, thus I wrote this dedication. (2)Qianjiang is a term used to describe a type of over-glaze enameled ware that was very popular during the Late Qing/Early Republican Period. The term Qianjiang cai (enamels) or Qianjiang porcelain was only coined in the 1950s. Prior to that, annals or commentaries in the late Qing and Republican periods did not classify it as a new distinctive type of over-glaze enamel decorative technique on porcelain. The term was initially used to describe a distinct style of landscape painting by the Yuan master Huang Gongwang. It is typified by the use of a particular color scheme: varying ink tones for outlines and reddish-brown for other aspects such as foliage, flowing water, mountain shades etc. The term was subsequently used to describe a porcelain painting style that used similar techniques but with additional colors such as aquamarine, moss green, pale blue, red and light pink. The relationship between qianjiang and fencai painting has caused quite a bit of confusion. In terms of the decorating medium, qianjiang utilizes fencai enamels. The main difference is actually the source of inspiration for the painting because the Qianjiang school draws its inspiration from the Chinese literati style, whereas the typical fencai work is more akin to gongbi painting. For fencai painting, the areas within the outlines of the motif are first applied with an arsenic-based opaque white pigment. The deeper and lighter tones are then obtained by mixing the enamels with different amounts of this opaque substance. For Qianjiang, the enamels are applied directly without the opaque white pigment. Hence, the enamels are thin and lack tonal gradations, especially on the early qianjiang works.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's London, 16 May 2014, lot 1254Price: GBP 18,750 or approx. The bronze with a rich, naturally grown, dark patina with malachite encrustations to the base.Weight: 5,286 g Dimensions: Height 38.7 cm Zhenwu, originally called Xuanwu (Dark Warrior), first appears in the Daoist pantheon as the embodiment of one of the four cardinal directions, representing the north, depicted emblematically as a tortoise entwined with a snake. The tortoise and snake imagery can be traced back to the late Warring States period, circa 3rd century B.C.In the early Northern Song dynasty, the emperor Song Zhenzong (r. 998-1022) who was an ardent Daoist, decreed that the god's name should be changed to Zhenwu (Perfected Warrior), and ordered a temple to be built in the Song capital city, Kaifeng, for the worship of Zhenwu, who was then represented in human form. During the Yuan dynasty, Zhenwu was elevated to the rank of celestial emperor and referred to as “Supreme Emperor of the Dark Heaven, Primal Sage, and Benevolent Majesty."In the early Ming dynasty, Zhenwu again was favored by the imperial house, and the early Ming emperor Yongle (r. 1403-1424) ordered the construction of many temples dedicated to Zhenwu, including the large temple which still remains as the northernmost building at the meridian of the 'Forbidden City' in Beijing. Zhenwu became one of the most important and most widely venerated of all the Daoist gods during the Ming dynasty and continued to be worshiped by Manchu emperors throughout the Qing dynasty.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely related Auction: Christie's London, 14 May 2019, lot 124 Price: GBP 18,750 or approx. A LARGE SANCAI-GLAZED 'ARCHER' GUARDIAN FIGURE (LOKAPALA), TANG DYNASTYChina, 7th-8th century. Exquisitely modeled, standing on a recumbent bull over a pierced rockwork base, his right arm bent and left arm extended, poised to shoot an arrow from his now lost bow. The lokapala is dressed in elaborate armor with dragon epaulets and divided breast plate, over a knee-length tunic. His unglazed face is well modeled with a fierce, somewhat hypnotic expression. The head is surmounted by a tall phoenix-form headdress. The figure is splash-glazed in amber, green, and straw.Provenance: From the collection of Joseph Rondina, acquired before 1996, and thence by descent to the last owner. Joseph Rondina (1927-2022) was born into a first-generation Florentine-American family in Auburn, upstate New York. Returning to the U.S. after being stationed in Berlin at the end of the Second World War, he studied at the Whitman School of Design before opening Joseph Rondina Antiques on Madison Avenue in Manhattan's Upper East Side in 1957. In the beginning, his interests focused primarily on European 18th-century decorative arts and furniture, over time developing to include Chinese, Korean, Indian, Thai, Cambodian, Persian and Japanese art, bringing a more esoteric and exotic style to the market. His clientele included stars of the stage and screen, royalty, notables, dignitaries, and denizens of the social register from the United States and abroad.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. Old repairs and minor touch-ups as generally expected from authentic Tang-dynasty excavations. Old wear, glaze flaking and crackling, small nicks and losses, light scratches, soil encrustations overall.Weight: 11.5 kgDimensions: Height 97.4 cm Large, imposing guardian figures like the present lot were made to stand guard in the tombs of Tang dynasty elite. Those with vibrant sancai (three color) glazes, like the current example, flourished from the late 7th to mid-8th century. One of the earliest tombs to contain sancai pieces was that of Li Feng, Prince of Guo (622-675), fifteenth son of Emperor Gaozu, founder of the Tang dynasty. By the first decade of the 8th century, large sancai figures were included in the tombs of royalty and nobility both at the capital Chang'an (modern day Xian) and at Luoyang, which served as the Eastern Capital in the Tang period. The inclusion of large sancai figures declined significantly following the An Lushan rebellion of 755-763, which had a devastating effect on the empire, seriously weakening the dynasty, and leading to the loss of the Western Regions.Expert's note: Based on the size and quality of the modeling of the present lot, and considering the known examples of Lokapala in public collections, both in China and around the world, it is obvious that the current figure hails from the tomb of an elite individual.

THOMAS ROBERTS (1748-1777) The Salmon Leap at Leixlip Oil on canvas, 41.5 x 61.5cm Provenance: with Cynthia O’Connor Gallery, Dublin; Private collection, Dublin Exhibited: possibly the picture exhibited at the Society of Artists in Ireland in 1772, No. 60, a View of the Salmon-Leap at Leixlip; Thomas Roberts, 1748-1777, National Gallery of Ireland, 2009, No. 38 Literature: William Laffan and Brendan Rooney, Thomas Roberts, Landscape and Patronage in Eighteenth-Century Ireland (Tralee, 2009) pp. 185-87 In the tragically short span of his career, Roberts produced a body of consistently accomplished, gently lyrical work that justifies his title of the finest Irish landscape painter of the eighteenth century (AAI, Vol. 2, p. 425). Among his exhibits in the 1772 exhibition in the Society of Artists Great Room in Dublin’s [South] William Street was an painting, very likely the present work, showing the celebrated salmon-leap at Leixlip. In the 1772 exhibition, Roberts’s picture appeared alongside three of Roberts’s views of nearby Lucan house and demesne. A landmark, just eight Irish miles from Dublin, the salmon-leap was particularly popular with day-trippers from the capital, and was recorded by several artists and writers in the late-eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Roberts’s fellow artist John O’Keefe provided the following description of the spot: It is a custom of the Dublin people to go to Leixlip, and see what is called the salmon-leap. I often went, and stood upon the bridge, looking into Lady Mazarene’s gardens, through which the Liffey runs. The rise is about twelve feet; when the salmon gets to the bottom of the cataract, it takes its tail in its mouth, gives a spring and leap, and throws itself into the upper part of the waters: in this surprising action it was only a few yards from me. When in the upper waters, it swims on, and you neither see nor know anything more about it. The landscape painter William Jones had painted the salmon-leap at Leixlip as early as 1745, and dedicated Giles Smith’s engraving after his painting to the Right Hon. William Conolly of Leixlip Castle. However, perhaps the most significant artist to have visited the landmark before Roberts was George Barret, who executed at least one fine watercolour of the salmon-leap. The beauty spot remained popular into the nineteenth century, when it was depicted with varying degrees of success and accuracy by, among others, William Howis and William Henry Bartlett. The salmon-leap was submerged in 1947 when the Leixlip dam and reservoir were built. Roberts’s view of the tumultuous cascade eschews the Claudean tradition that had exercised a profound influence over Irish landscape painters, including Roberts himself, for over a century. The composition is notably horizontal, and does not the feature the recessional planes that traditionally gave depth and balance to classical landscapes. Instead, the composition anticipates the empirical essays of nineteenth-century artists. In tone, detail and finish, however, it is typical of Roberts’s work. Indeed, it anticipates the artist’s later dramatic landscapes featuring landstorms and similar phenomena, in which Roberts explored the irresistible effects of nature. Roberts did not consider the salmon-leap at Leixlip a place to which visitors came to sit and contemplate, as they did in the artist’s views of the weir at Lucan, but rather one that inspired caution and awe in equal measure. This is communicated by the gentleman who escorts two elegant ladies by the cataract, and who points tentatively with his cane towards the water as it cascades powerfully below them. Further upstream along the path, other visitors observe from a safer distance. The stone arch on the northern bank, the sole surviving part of a bridge destroyed by floods in the 1730s, and clearly visible in all views of the salmon-leap, stands as testament to the potency of the river. The gentleman by the edge of the cascade might be the Viceroy, Lord Townshend, whose grand summer residence Leixlip Castle was situated a short distance away. Townshend leased the castle from its owners, the Conollys of Castletown from 1767 to 1772, and it may well have been for him that the building was restored and embellished. Townshend was known to ‘throw open the grounds on Sundays and mingle incognito with the visitors who had driven out from Dublin to admire the Salmon Leap and take the waters at Lucan Spa’. As the late Desmond Guinness observed, engraved views of the salmon-leap executed in the eighteenth century were usually dedicated to the then occupant of the castle. The subject, like those around the Lucan demesne, provided Roberts with the opportunity to exercise his skill in describing rock and stone, foliage and, perhaps most notable, water effects. The expertly described textures, tones and patterns of this natural matter qualify Roberts finest works throughout his career. We are grateful to William Laffan and Brendan Rooney whose work on Thomas Roberts informs this catalogue note.

THE CLASH - CAPITAL RADIO EP (ORIGINAL UK PROMO - CBS CL 1). Super hard to find original UK promo copy of the Capital Radio EP by The Clash (the release which was given away to a select group of NME readers who hand-sent off their coupon along with the red sticker which was found on the inside of the cover of the first 10,000 copies of The Clash's eponymous album, which had been released that week in April 1977...). The record (CL 1) is in superb Ex+ condition showing only a couple of extremely faint, slight and wispy paper marks to the very clean playing surfaces.
