A fine French gilt bronze spread eagle, of the style used on Imperial standards. Eagle’s head faces to the right. Extreme wing width 10”, height 8” thunderbolt length 4½”, flat gilt plinth 5” x 2¼” mounted on a black granite block, engraved with the large capital “N” gilt. Under the plinth a sign of old mounting marks. Probably converted for a desk ornament. The claw feet have been made separately. Good Condition (eagle loose on claws). Plate 15

A most interesting 17th century broadsword, broad DE tapering blade 29”, with shallow central fuller, with a French inscription in large capital letters on one side (partly indecipherable) “A V.... FM. ..IV.. CE•EST•A•RONDE•TOVT•EST•BIEN•A•LE (sic) •MONDE” and what appears to be a “pidgin” English version on the other side “...CI..FLORET•SO•ICI•AL•WEL•INDE•WERM”, iron basket hilt and round grip, the grip bound with narrow leather strap which originally extended around all the bars of the hilt but which is now mostly worn away. Border Counties Railway. Copy Minute Book of the meetings of the board of the Border Counties Railway from its inception 14th January 1854. until April 10th 1855, 59pp. of manuscript minutes written in a secretarial hand, contemp. qtr. roan, folio The Border Counties starting at a junction with the Newcastle & Carlisle Railway at Hexham was originally an enterprise promoted by W.H. Charlton of Hesleyside who aimed to take advantage of the Plashetts coalfield south of the border, and to connect with the North British Railway at Hawick to open up the Lowland Scottish Manufacturing area. The venture was taken over by the North British Railway in 1855. This volume covers the original planning of the railway, its inception, prospectus raising share capital, progress of the Act through Parliament, surveys, tenders, right up to the appointment of contractors for the first stage from Hexham to Bellingham and on to Belling (now Falstone). This volume would appear to have belonged to one of the directors who ceased to have an interest when the project was taken over by the North British Railway. The line was opened in 1862. and closed to passenger service in 1956. (1)

A good Aleppo kelim, south east Anatolia, mid-19th century. 10ft. 7in. x 5ft. 3.23m. x 1.52m. Woven as usual in two sections joined vertically. Such kelims are known as Aleppo since the latter city, in Syria, was once the Ottoman administrative capital of the area of southern Anatolia where they were made. See Petsopoulis, Kilim no. 201 for a very similar example; the author points out that there is a greater preponderance of 'filler' ornaments on the right side; on our example, however, this is true of the left. A George IV rosewood and brass inlaid cylinder desk, the raised simulated top with mirror plates to the inside and corinthian capital columns, above a fall revealing a pull-out slide with pigeon holes and satinwood front drawer, the lowest hinging to form a writing slope, above a frieze drawer and false reverse on twin scroll supports united by a turned stretcher on anthemion applied brass sabots and castors, 52in (132cm) h, 32in (81.3cm) w, 20.5in (52cm) d. Provenance: Ingestre Hall, Staffordshire, the home of the Earls of Shrewsbury.

Large multiple sheet vellum indenture dated 8th January 1735 , between Thomas Watts and John Anderson for the sale of that capital messuage or mansion house called the Castle, in Bridgwater, etc., with wax seal, together with three other interesting large multiple sheet vellum indentures relating to the sale of the Manor of Stapletons, in Somerset, from the early 19th c., (4)"
"Book of Hours [Dutch]. A bound volume of 98 leaves, prob. Holland or Flanders, 15th c., five prelims., sixteen lines to each leaf with red and some blue capitals throughout, three near-identical decorated leaves at the start of three 'parts', each with one six-line gold initial on a red and blue ground with floral decoration, the borders with floral tracing in red, blue and gold, seven leaves with a five-line capital (mostly 'G') in gold on red and blue gounds, with decorative tracing in white, blank portions of two pages and final leaf verso plus four additional leaves with manuscript text in a later hand, some soiling and light dampstaining throughout, disbound without covers, remains of broken 17th-c.(?) calf spine present, text block size approx. 82 x 60 mm, leaf sizes 140 x 100 mm, preserved in modern purpose-made cloth book-box (1)"
