SAM BOUGH RSA RSW (SCOTTISH 1822 - 1878), RIDING ACROSS THE SANDS oil on canvas, monogrammed and dated 1860 framed image size 31cm x 61cm, overall size 45cm x 76cm Label verso: St. Helier Galleries Ltd., Jersey. Note: Considered to be one of the most influential and prolific Scottish landscape painters of the 19th century, Sam Bough RSA was a self-taught artist who spent much of his career working in Scotland. Born in 1822 in Carlisle, Bough settled in Manchester where he worked as a scene painter in the Theatre Royal. After moving to Glasgow he continued to paint in the evenings whilst working at the New Princes Theatre, eventually building enough success to move to painting full-time. Bough's reputation as a topographical and landscape painter grew during the 1850's and by the time he resettled in Edinburgh he had established himself as a successful landscape artist. Whilst living in the capital he created some of his most important paintings. At this point in the 1950s, artistically he was reaping the rewards of many years working and sketching outside, most particularly amongst the ships and shores of the Clyde, Forth and the Fife coast. He had trained his eye sketching from nature across the countryside of the north of England and Scotland. Now able to commit to painting full-time, he was prolific and successful, and in one year, 1859, he submitted seven paintings to the Manchester Institute and a further ten to the Royal Scottish Academy. With a relaxed approach to life, one story tells of him submitting ten canvases to an exhibition, nine fully realised and one completely blank. When questioned over the blank canvas, he indicated that the exhibition was not for another two weeks, so he had plenty of time to work it up! Bough was as successful a painter in both oils and watercolours, and was committed to depicting a wide variety of landscape views and effects, urban and rural, bright days and dark storms. However, there are specific locations and landscapes that Bough returns to regularly in his work; the hustle and bustle of harbours and coastal towns, with the distinctive Newhaven harbour a particular favourite and the hunting Forest of Cadzow, near Hamilton. Generally associated with views of Scotland, he did also create a series of Italian views. In general, his spontaneity, loose technique and interest in capturing fleeting atmospheric effects, particularly cloud formations and weather, establishes him as an important predecessor of the Scottish Impressionists, paving the way for the development towards a freer, plein air style.

An outstanding pair of bronze and iron fittings, each one comprising a spiral fluted column with an iron rod projecting from the Ionic-variant capital that is surmounted by a bust of Bacchus wearing a goat pelt with a hoof falling over his shoulder. Aside from this, his chest is revealed with delineated nipples. Bacchus' handsome face is crowned by a centrally-parted coiffure adorned by a wreath of ivy leaves and berries and pulled back into a low chignon with wavy locks cascading over his shoulders. Both of these matching busts sit upon rectangular plinths with hatched borders and a looped handle joining the plinths to the upper end of the bust's verso, just beneath the nape of the neck. Father Liber (Liber Pater) or Bacchus was the god the Romans identified with Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and fertility. He has come to be associated particularly with drunkenness and lascivious behavior. Thus, even today people speak of having “bacchic rites,” referring back to ecstatic and frenzied Dionysian or bacchic festivals such as those that take place in Euripides' play the Bacchae. ‘Back home for Keeps.. When?’ small German airborne Propaganda leaflet. Front depicts a soldier and woman kissing in black and white image, copy of the image from the famous Onieda Company Ltd advertisement campaign. The illustration was taken from the ad in the May 8, 1944 issue of LIFE magazine. Under the picture in large capital letters was printed, WHEN? On the back of the poster was printed, "Dead men tell no tells nor do they kiss their girls." These posters were dropped in large numbers behind our lines in an attempt to demoralise the troops. 9cm x 13.5cm.

Two very similar George II cast silver shaped-square candlesticks. Each with an unmarked and crested nozzle, a round capital, knopped stem on stepped sunk-centre bases with conforming crests, one with the mark of John Cafe, London 1754, (scratch weight beneath '16:16'), 497g; (542g including the nozzle), the other with the mark of James Gould, London 1740, (scratch weight beneath '17:10', 515g; (558g including the nozzle), each approx. 20cm high overall (8 inches) Condition Report: Overall good condition for age, general wear and tear commensurate with age and use. Both in about 6 out of 10 condition. The nozzles both good, both have some mis-shaping of the inner 'sleeve', one with no discernible mark and the 'sleeve' shortened in height, the other with traces of marks namely the very top of the crown only. Some wear to the 'top' steps' of both bases and neither could be described as crisp though they are in good/fair honest condition. The John Cafe stick wobbles slightly on a flat surface. The marks beneath are good.

A mahogany box with a brass plate to the cover inscribed to 'Capt'n Lyons, H.M.S Madascar'circa 1831-34the interior with a paper label, presumably relating to the original contents, for Edward Massey's Patent Ship's log, detailing instructions for use, with key, the lockplate further indistinctly marked for Joseph Bramah & Sons. 14 Piccadilly, 49cm wide, 15cm high and 22.2cm deep Notes: Admiral Edmund Lyons, 1st Baron Lyons, GCB, GCMG, KCH (21 November 1790 – 23 November 1858). Lyons was both an eminent British Admiral of the Royal Navy and a diplomat. He is noted for helping to ensure Britain's victory in the Crimean War as Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet during the Siege of Sevastopol (1854–1855). In 1831, Lyons was appointed to command the frigate HMS Madagascar (1822) before he sailed it for the Mediterranean in February 1832. HMS Madagascar delivered Bavarian Prince Otto, who had been selected as the King of Greece, to his new capital Nafplion in 1833. This 46-gun fifth-rate frigate was under Lyon's command until 1834.
