Lot 1531

4th century BC. A broad bronze dish with radiating repoussé ovoid panels between repoussé palmettes, central boss and ring of pellets; everted rim. 412 grams, 23cm (9"). Private collection, London, UK; formerly with Persepolis Gallery, Mayfair, London, UK; in the 1980s. Cf. Curtiss, J. & Tallis, N. Forgotten Empire. The World of Ancient Persia, London, 2005, item 277. Examples of phiale have come to light at a number of sites in the ancient kingdom of Macedon such as Aegae (notably the rich tomb of the Lady of Aegae) and the cemetery of Archontiko close to the ancient capital of Pella. The presence of such vessels reveals the close political and trading ties with the Persian Empire and the western satrapies. Many of the examples found at Macedonian sites have inscriptions dedicated to the gods and it would seem that they were used in pouring libations at important shrines in the kingdom. Fine condition; small holes to sidewall.

A silver statuette of the goddess Fortuna standing on a rectangular base, robed, with a cornucopia in her left hand and a ship's rudder in her right. 8.62 grams, 33mm (1 1/4"). Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Fortuna was the Roman equivalent of the Greek Tyche, and was the goddess of fate, chance and luck. The cornucopia symbolises the abundance of good luck that people hoped for in worshipping her and the rudder symbolises her steering the destiny of people. Her festival was on May 25 and she had an important sanctuary at Praeneste, not far from Rome. In the city of Rome itself she had a temple in the Forum Boarium. The goddess had many aspects such as Fortuna Augusta, the luck of the emperor and the Imperial family, Fortuna Publica, the luck of the people, and Fortuna Obsequens, indulgent fortune, amongst many others. Her cult was also established by Constantine in his new capital of Constantinople by the building of a temple to her. Very fine condition.

He has appeared in more than fifty films, plays and TV series spanning six decades; and recently gained new fans through his appearances in the Harry Potter films. He was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 1998 Queen's Birthday Honours; promoted to Commander (CBE) in the 2008 New Year Honours. [4, No Reserve] Fine condition.
