Chippendale style bureau dame / office table, England, XVIII century. In mahogany.Measurements: 77 x 108 x 64 cm.Rococo table in the Chippendale style. With a straight plan, it has a smooth top, with a leather tablecloth, bordered by a moulding. The moulding is decorated with decorative notches. The waist is supported by two drawers with iron handles, and stands on four slender legs with claw-and-ball feet. Foliage-like vegetal carving covers the shoulders of the slender legs.Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779) was one of the most important decorators of Rococo London, and indeed the originator of the English style of the period. The style known as Chippendale developed from about 1750, and although it began to decline in London around 1765, it was only then that it began to spread outside the capital, and indeed it was to enjoy great development in outlying centres for the rest of the century. The Chippendale style is composed of rococo features of French origin, Gothic and Chinese elements, mixed either separately, all together or only two of them.

THOMAS DANIELL (BRITISH 1749-1840)PANCHGANGA AND DURGA GHATS, BENARES, INDIA, CIRCA 1800Oil on canvas52.5 x 42cm (20½ x 16½ in.)Provenance:Spink, London (No. K2/3772)Inchcape & Co. Ltd.Sale, Christie's, London, Arts of India, 27 September 2001, lot 1Literature:M. Schellim, Oil paintings of India and the East by Thomas Daniel, R. A. (1949-1840) and William Daniell, R. A. (1769-1837), London, 1979, p. 67, pl. TD61, illustrated as William DaniellDuring their first tour which took them along the Ganges, the Daniells sailed past Benares and made numerous sketches and drawings from the river which were later used as the basis for fully worked up oils. On 4 December 1788, William recorded in his diary 'The general view of Benares from the Pinnacle was so very grand that I stayed on Board the whole day to draw it, earing if we let slip the present opportunity that we might never see it in a better point of View' (M. Hardie and M. Clayton, Walker's Quarterly, 1932). The Daniells returned to Benares for a longer stay on their return voyage a year later (November-December). Benares (now known as Varanasi) continues to be the religious capital of India and one of the most important places of pilgrimage and of ritual bathing. The Panchganga Ghat, as its name indicates, is where five rivers are supposed to meet. The Daniells depicted the Ghats in their Oriental Scenery and the accompanying text describes them as 'the most considerable of any of the Ganges.....vast multitudes of devotees..... to this city perform penance, and transact mercantile affairs. An opinion prevails amongst them that drawing the last breath at Coss (Benares) is a circumstance much in favour of their enjoyment of future happiness' (T. & W. Daniell, Oriental Scenery, 1795-1808).Condition Report: The canvas has been relined and is slightly uneven along the upper edge. Some minor abrasions around the edges from contact with the frame. The paint layers appear stable. UV light reveals scattered retouching, mainly concentrated in the sky and water. Minor areas of very fine surface cracking. Condition Report Disclaimer

MANUEL HERNÁNDEZ MOMPÓ (Valencia, 1927 - Madrid, 1992)"Peasant women looking out of the window", 1976.Mixed media on cardboard.Signed and dated in the lower left corner.Work reproduced in the catalogue raisonné of the artist "Manuel Hernández. Paintings, sculptures and drawings, 1969-1986", vol. II, ref. 1976/54, p. 286.Provenance: Benlliure Gallery, Valencia.Measurements: 54 x 32 cm; 81 x 72 cm (frame).Work treated from an abstract language of simple forms tending towards geometry, in which the artist has managed to introduce the spectator into the aesthetic experience of experimentation, typical of the creation of a concrete and subjective aesthetic language. The son of a painting teacher, Hernández Mompó alternated his primary and secondary school studies with classes at the Escuela de Artes Aplicadas y Oficios Artísticos in Valencia, which he entered in 1943. In 1948 he obtained a grant to paint in Granada, at the Residence for Painters, and three years later a new grant enabled him to travel to Paris. In the French capital he came into contact with the circles of informalist painters, whose influence would mark his later work, leaving behind the landscapes and portraits that had dominated his oeuvre until then. Between 1954 and 1955 he spent a long period in Rome, on a grant from the Department of Culture of the Ministry of National Education to study at the Spanish Academy of Fine Arts in the Italian capital. In 1954 he took part in the Viareggio International Exhibition, where he was awarded the Italian Navigation Prize. He left Italy and settled in Amsterdam, where he again frequented the informalist cenacles. In 1957 he returned to Spain and settled in Aravaca (Madrid). The following year he was awarded a grant from the Juan March Foundation in Madrid, and won the Grand National Painting Prize and a first medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts. During the sixties and seventies he alternated his residence between Madrid, Ibiza, and in 1973 he spent a year in California. On his return to Spain he settled in Mallorca. Hernández Mompó exhibited in the main capitals of Europe and the United States, and took part in national and international exhibitions. Among his most outstanding awards was the Unesco Prize received at the 34th Venice Biennale in 1968. In 1984 he was awarded the National Prize for Fine Arts by the Ministry of Culture. His youthful style was soon influenced in a definitive way by abstract expressionism and informalism, although his works never lost reality as a reference point. In his production, Hernández Mompó captures a figurative and poetic imagery, harmoniously mixed with abstract elements and rich superimposition effects. Hernández Mompó is represented at the IVAM in Valencia, the Museo Nacional Reina Sofía, the Museo de Arte Abstracto in Cuenca, the British Museum in London, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Chase Manhattan Bank Collection in New York and the Winterthur Museum in Switzerland, among many others.

He won first prize at the University Painting Exhibition, which enabled him to take part for the first time in group exhibitions in Barcelona and Madrid in 1955 and 1956. In 1957 he obtained a grant from the French government to further his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In the French capital he came into contact with a different artistic and intellectual scene, which opened him up to new ideas. After this period he travelled, again on a scholarship, to London, where he attended classes at Saint Martin's School of Art. After his first solo exhibition, at the Liberty Gallery in London in 1958, Navarro organised personal exhibitions in Spain, England, Belgium, Switzerland, France, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Panama and the United States. Tipu once said: “I would rather live one day as a tiger than a lifetime as a sheep”. When the British under Baird’s leadership finally captured Tipu’s capital city, the conquerors were astonished at the jewels, arms and art objects that Tipu had collected. Baird, son of an Edinburgh merchant family, later declared Tipu dead, from a gunshot to the head and three bayonet wounds. Novo-Hispanic school, 17th century."El taller de San José".Oil on canvas (original).Period frame. It presents lack of paint and breaks in the canvas.Measurements: 115 x 86 cm; 128,5 x 100 cm (frame). The Holy Family has been represented here in the interior of the carpenter's workshop of San José. The three figures form a domestic picture brimming with tenderness: the Child helps his father, learning the trade, while the Virgin weaves, seated in a corner. The nimbus, however, reveals her divine condition. Until the Counter-Reformation, the figure of St Joseph was usually relegated to the background, as no theological importance was attached to him. From Trent onwards, however, his leading role as Jesus' protector during his childhood, as a guide during his youth, and also as a figure with a personality of his own, was recovered. As a result, we begin to see him depicted working in his workshop, almost always accompanied by the Virgin and Jesus. During Spanish colonial rule, a mainly religious art developed in the Viceroyal lands, aimed at Christianising the indigenous peoples. Local artists were modelled on Spanish works, which they followed literally in terms of type and iconography, but they soon developed their own identity, with the workshops of the Quito school, for example, standing out. Likewise, during the Viceroyalty, native artists trained in the workshops of the convents of the capital cities.

Lot 56

Visigothic capital of Corinthian inspiration; 6th-8th century.Carved marble. It shows faults and wear in the carving.Measurements: 32 x 34 x 30 cm.Marble capital that has been conceived through an aesthetic of classical inspiration that rescues one of the classical orders (Ionic, Doric and Corinthian), specifically the Corinthian order. The creation of the Corinthian order is attributed to the Greek sculptor Callimachus in the 4th century BC. It is basically the same as the Ionic order, but differs from it in the shape and size of the capital. It is the most ornate of the three main classical orders, and although it is of Greek origin it was mainly used in Roman architecture. carving. When the Visigoths left Italy under Ataulf, they moved towards the centre and south of Gaul, passing from there to the Iberian Peninsula. The Visigothic Kingdom of Toulouse (Toulouse, France) then managed to conquer more territory on the peninsula, until Alaric II was defeated by the Franks, losing the French possessions and giving way to the so-called Visigothic Kingdom of Toledo, a period of great importance in the arts (characterised by a clear maintenance of Roman models together with Byzantine influences) and culture in general, which ended with the entry of the Muslims around the beginning of the 7th century.

Lot 94

Castanets Capital; Renaissance; Spain XVI.Carved marble. It has a later casting.Measurements: 34 x 38 x 35 cm.This type of capital, nicknamed "de moñas" or "de castanets" due to the shapes given to its volutes, was very common in palaces, cloisters of convents, stately homes, etc. in Seville at the time. Its forms are the result of a modification and stylisation of the classical composite order (which, in turn, is the result in the Roman Empire of the mixture of Ionic volutes and the acanthus leaves of the Corinthian order).

ATHENAEUS OF NAUCRATISDeipnosophistae, in Greek, FIRST EDITION, edited by Marcus Musurus, Greek italic type, capital spaces with guide-letters, dolphin and anchor device on first and last pages, with blank leaf B10 of preliminaries (often lacking), some mostly light dampstaining, final leaf with device laid down, modern half calf over marbled boards, gilt lettered on spine [Adams A2096; Ahmanson-Murphy, 123; Renouard p.67; Vicaire 50], folio (304 x 108mm.), Venice, Aldus Manutius and Andreas Torresanus, August 1514Footnotes:EDITIO PRINCEPS OF THE EARLIEST SURVIVING COOKERY TEXT: a valuable source of information on intellectual mores of the classical world, 'magnifiquement exécutée' (Vicaire). The Deipnosophistae ('Banquet of the learned') is the only known work by Athenaeus of Naucratis, a Greco-Egyptian writing in the early part of the 3rd century AD. In it a variety of scholars are invited to dine at a banquet held at the house of Larensius, a wealthy book-collector and patron of the arts. They debate at length a wide spectrum of topics, notably food, wine and cookery (the work is an important source of Greek, Persian, Roman and Sicilian recipes, many of which would have been lost), homosexuality (an unusually candid portrait for the time), sexual mores in general, health, music and philology. Aldus had planned a Greek edition of the work soon after establishing his press, but only got as far as printing a one-page proof in his second Greek type, which was not used after 1499.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: •• Zero rated for VAT, no VAT will be added to the Hammer Price or the Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

A PANORAMA OF THE DELHI DURBAR, BOURNE AND SHEPHERD STUDIO, 1912, composed of five gelatin prints, mounted together, framed, inscribed 'Bourne and Shepherd' on right end print, inscribed 'Delhi Durbar 1912 [sic]' on mount, image as group 18 x 135cm The apparently erroneous dating may refer to the production of the photograph, rather than the event depicted. The Delhi Durbar, held on 12 December 1911, was the third of three held in Coronation Park during the British Raj. It marked the coronation of George V which had taken place in London six months earlier. The park, on the northern edge of the Indian capital, is now the repository of a number of British statues removed from prominent sites on the streets of New Delhi.
