This was a successful attack conducted by the Dutch navy on English warships laid up in the fleet anchorages off Chatham Dockyard and Gillingham in the county of Kent. At the time, the fortress of Upnor Castle and a barrier chain called the "Gillingham Line" were supposed to protect the English ships. The Dutch, under the nominal command of Willem Joseph van Ghent and Lieutenant-Admiral Michiel de Ruyter, over several days bombarded and captured the town of Sheerness, sailed up the Thames estuary to Gravesend, then sailed into the River Medway to Chatham and Gillingham, where they engaged fortifications with cannon fire, burned or captured three capital ships and ten more ships of the line, and captured and towed away the flagship of the English fleet, HMS Royal Charles. Politically, the raid was disastrous for King Charles's war plans and led to a quick end to the war and a favourable peace for the Dutch. It was one of the worst defeats in the Royal Navy's history, and one of the worst suffered by the British military. Horace George Franks called it the "most serious defeat it has ever had in its home waters."

Pencil on Paper. LBJ had an obsession with all things related to his native Lone Star state. In this piece he illustrates what appears to be a wooden ranch fence atop wind-swept grass. Johnson prints the word "TEXAS" in capital letters at the top of the stationery, and then, like his own unpredictable personality, adds an alien-like head above the printed words United States Senate and two smaller heads on the two fence posts. Such doodling behavior was not unusual for LBJ who typically wandered off into a mindset of illusions. Provenance: Collection of John Burke Jovich, Presidential Historian. Sheet Size: 10.5 x 8 in. Unframed.

Shannon Stirnweis (B. 1931) "Bicentennial of the New York Stock Exchange" Signed middle left. Original Oil painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.S. 29c Bicentennial of the New York Stock Exchange stamp issued May 17, 1992. In 1792 a group of 24 men convened under a buttonwood tree in New York to discuss their mutual interest in finances and investments. From this encounter, which took place on what is now Wall Street, evolved the world's largest marketplace for securities -- the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). Formally instituted in 1817 as the New York Stock and Exchange Board, the organization flourished during the early 19th century, when America's emphasis on mercantilism and expansion of the railroads stimulated growth in the securities marketplace. But many investors lost heavily in the Panic of 1837, and the exchange subsequently required all listed companies to provide public disclosures of financial records before offering stock. Adopting its present name in 1863, the exchange furnished much of the capital needed to move America into the post-Civil War industrial era. After 1868, seats on the exchange -- limited to 1,366 since 1868 -- were obtained only by purchase from an existing member. A corporation seeking to list on the NYSE must meet rigorous conditions. It must earn a minimum of $2.5 million before taxes, possess at least one million shares of outstanding stock, grant voting rights to common stockholders and publish regular financial statements. Since the Great Depression of 1929, the NYSE has been regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission. Image Size: 14.25 x 19.25 in. Overall Size: 18.25 x 23.25 in. Unframed. (B13725)

John Swatsley (American, B. 1937) "Scenes of Morocco" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting originally appeared on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 22 Friendship with Morocco stamp issued July 17, 1987. Morocco was among the first nations to recognize the independence of the United States after the Revolutionary War. As the new nation began to trade with Europe and the Middle East, her ships were often attacked by the Barbary Pirates of Tunis and Tripoli. After unsuccessful negotiations between the U.S. Minister to Great Britain, John Adams, and the Tripoli government, the American Congress sent Thomas Barclay to neighboring Morocco to negotiate a separate treaty of peace and friendship. Moroccan Emperor Sidi Mohammed III, eager to gain a strong foreign trading partner, agreed to provide safe harbor for American merchant vessels -- and to intercede when they were seized by the Barbary states. Barclay conceded to the Emperor's demand for a nominal annual monetary tribute. Thus, an agreement was reached. In Morocco's capital, Marrakech, on June 23, 1786, the Treaty of Marrakech was signed. The next summer, on July 18, 1787, the treaty of peace and friendship was ratified by Congress and thus began the longest unbroken amity treaty in American diplomatic history. Image Size: 14 x 12 in. Overall Size: 20.5 x 18 in. Unframed. (B10943)

United States of America: Colored Troops Medal 1864, also known as the Butler Medal, silver, 40 mm, two African American soldiers of the Union Army attacking a masonry parapet, a cannon opposing them through an embrasure, a banner above 'FERRO IIS LIBERTAS PERVENIET', ex. 'U.S. COLOURED TROOPS', rev. an oak wreath, 'DISTINGUISHED FOR COURAGE/ CAMPAIGN BEFORE RICHMOND 1864', claw suspension, original ribbon with suspension brooch in the form of an oak leaf inscribed 'ARMY OF THE JAMES', un-named, in original case, ball element missing from suspension, otherwise extremely fine and rare, and attractively toned; together with a small note card "this medal I designed and caused to be struck in memory of the valiant charge of the Coloured Troops at "New Market Heights" and "Chaffins Farm" on that day......Please accept this as the First and only Medal ever struck to commemorate the bravery of Negro Soldiers by the white man.... You know how well deserved." The question of slavery was central to the bitter and devastating conflict that raged between the United and the Confederate States of America between 1861 and 1865. The citizens and leaders of the Union were far from united in opposition to racial prejudice, though a tradition of ethically motivated abolitionism exercised considerable influence. The Union, under President Abraham Lincoln, was reluctant at first to make the emancipation of slaves a military objective, but there was a long standing Northern tradition of sheltering fugitive slaves (often in defiance of Federal law), and Union General Benjamin Butler was the first senior figure to honour this tradition in a military context. In May 1861 three slaves escaped to his lines in Virginia. The slaveholder, a Confederate officer, approached under a flag of truce, expecting Butler to relinquish the men under the terms of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 (a major source of contention between North and South). Butler rebuffed this officer and found a pragmatic way of resolving the uncertain status of the former slaves by designating them as 'Contraband of War'. His government gave retrospective sanction to this act, and in the months before the final promulgation of the Emancipation Proclamation in January 1863, many more 'Contrabands' made it across the lines to Union held territory. As the war progressed, and the realisation that a comprehensive defeat of the Confederate forces was the only way to end it, the part-pragmatic and part-ideological practice of recruiting freed African Americans as soldiers to defeat their former masters became ever more firmly established. This in turn lead to a growing realisation of their courage and fighting abilities. The notion of a link between military service and civil rights had been articulated by former slave and abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass in 1861 when he said "Who would be free must himself strike the blow" The medal's Latin inscription, which translates as "Freedom will be theirs by the sword", confirms that - in Butler's view at least - the recipients had been fighting for the rights of African-Americans, and not merely for the interests of one white faction against another. The Battle of Chaffin's Farm and Newmarket Heights, September 29th and 30th 1864, was part of a broad strategic effort to overwhelm the extensive fortifications that protected the Confederate Capital of Richmond, Virginia. Like many battles of this war it involved infantrymen assaulting fixed defences and suffering terrible casualties to massed rifle and artillery fire. In the face of this horror the African American battalions under Butler's command acquitted themselves so valiantly that thirteen of their number won the Medal of Honour, and Butler - who read the battlefield reports with great care - was moved to commission this medal to honour an estimated 197 selected men. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint and mounted by Bigelow & Kennard of Boston, this medal is not only a rarity in absolute terms; it was in its day a radical innovation. Butler's memoirs indicate that he intended his medal to be partly based on the British Crimea Medal, although of course the Butler medal is a hybrid of campaign and gallantry award. Ref. 'Autobiography and Personal Reminiscences of Major-General Benj F. Butler: Butler's Book'; James M. McPherson, 'Battle Cry of Freedom. The Civil War Era'.

INDIAN MUTINY, 1857.  THE REMARKABLE MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF HARRIETT BRUNDELL OF FREQUENTLY DESCRIPTIVE AND LENGTHY ENTRIES FOR EVERY DAY OF THE PERIOD, INCLUDING THE DRAMATIC EVENTS OF HER PERILOUS FLIGHT TO CALCUTTA (KOLKATA), SUBSEQUENT REUNION WITH HER HUSBAND AND RETURN TO THEIR BUNGALOW OUTSIDE MIRZAPORE (MIRZAPUR)  inscribed on the endpaper Harriett W Brundell Oojlah [Bridge] near Mirzapore, N.W.P., Bengal, April 21st 1859, the entries written in black ink in a clear hand in a pocket book (17.5 x 20cm), straight grained maroon morocco worn, rebacked, April 21  1857-December 31, 1857A young Englishwoman of 25, Harriett Whisler Hopkins (1832-1902) arrived in India in late 1856.  She married at Calcutta Richard Shaw Brundell (1830-1903) an engineer engaged on the construction of the East India Railway.  She soon entered into the social life of H.E.I.C. wives, one or more of the couple's new British friends in the district - Thomsons, Howards and Burneys amongst others - featuring in the diary almost daily.  So does her horse "Sheik" and her love of early morning gallops and walks, with her husband or alone.  She seldom complains, finding only the unaccustomed heat and humidity trying.  Nor was she bored or disinterested,  her days occupied with music, reading, translating, exploring and shopping.Acutely aware of the worsening situation and having already made plans on the 22nd April to find refuge in a safe house, taking with them their "Silver rupees, two guns and my dressing case in the buggy", by June 5th intending to spend the day with the Howards and hearing that a steamer was preparing to evacuate the remaining European ladies to Calcutta, "My husband decided (much against my will for I would far rather have taken my chance of living or dying with him) that I should do the same.  When the vessel eventually got underway they endured a terrifying voyage.  At night the Captain, fearing an imminent attack disembarked the passengers and treasure that had also to be taken out of harms way, into the jolly boat which was rowed to a flat in the river.  When the rebels discovered the feint, the passengers facing an imminent assault were compelled to make a hasty departure in the boat, which was rowed by eight lascaRs as fast as possible, with rebels in pursuit whilst being fired upon from both sides of the river.  "We committed ourselves to God's care and once or twice.... Captain Gordon said there is no chance for  us ladies, we can only pray..."  Later, passing the vessel of a ranee attended by four hundred sepoys in boats, they sought and obtained protection but "We felt confident that her sepoys would murder us during the night and saw nothing but death before us. Imagine then our delight at 5am on perceiving the steamer coming to our assistance".The party arrived at Calcutta on the 28th June, where she was to remain for four months, being reunited with her husband at the end of July.  Her observations of Calcutta life included encountering the Governor General's wife Lady Canning on horseback, "She has rather a ladylike appearance and is interesting looking, but not pretty,"  observing the solar eclipse on the 11th August and learning of the fall of Delhi and [first] Relief of Lucknow.  In early December a leisurely return voyage on the "Madras" passed pleasantly with frequent stops and plenty of observations  en route, especially of Benares.  When they eventually got home their bungalow looked "deserted and miserable".  Christmas Day was spent at the Thomsons where the "capital dinner" consisted of "soup and fish, roast beef and boiled roast turkey and ham, roast fowls and ducks, oyster pates, sausages and game....."Although no mention of it is made in the diary, she was by then two months pregnant. The first of the couple's seven children, a girl, was born at Bindachull near Mirzapur in July, 1858

A DIAMOND NECKLACE, BY FÜRST, CIRCA 1945-50 Composed of graduated fan-shaped links decorated with foliate scrolling engravings throughout, each link accented with old brilliant and cushion-shaped diamond highlights, mounted in gold, signed Fürst Roma, diamonds approximately 3.50cts total, central motif converts into a double pin brooch, necklace length 38.8cm, central motif length 5.8cm In 1830, Moric Fürst decided to move from Bratislava, Slovakia, to Turin, in Italy, and this marks the beginning of the Fürst family empire. He opens his first atelier in the Subalpine Gallery and becomes supplier of the Savoyard court. Between 1861 - 65, Turin became the capital, and as a result it could exert influence over the market for gold and precious stones. Of Moric's nine children, five of them went on to become jewellers. Renzo Emanuele took over the business in Turin in the central Via Roma and of his five children, three of them, Maurizio, Renzito and Franco went on to open shops in Rome, Genoa and Milan respectively. From the post-war period the Fürst stores created objects for the most exclusive customers. In Rome, the boutique via Veneto which opened in 1960 was a true reference of the Dolce Vita, began representing Harry Winston, further enhancing Maurizio's esteemed reputation as a leader in important classic jewellery. Hollywood stars, noblewomen, and wealthy ladies visited the boutique and bought unique objects with a refined Italian style. Maurizio also began representing Harry Winston, further enhancing his esteemed reputation as a leader in important classic jewellery In Milan, the atelier in Via Manzoni enchanted the world stars of La Scala theatre and the most refined ladies. The production of the Fürst objects was entrusted to their own goldsmith workshops. After Maurizios death, his family ran the boutique for a few years, but they eventually relocated to Venezuela, where they still own a boutique today.

The rare and important military honour medal group and related items of Major Antony Harrison Douglas MBE BSc Eng Psc(n)+ RE, a Sapper in the Royal Engineers who served in the Falklands with 11 Field Squadron. Comprising South Atlantic Medal with Rosette, General Service Medal with Northern Ireland clasp, MBE, miniature trio, Royal Engineers cap badge, Harrier Support Force cloth badge & another, pair of spurs, map of the Falklands, MBE citation signed by HRH Queen Elizabeth II & Prince Philip, Officer citation, Royal Engineers dress sword with shagreen grip & engraved blade inscribed "A.H. Douglas 9-3-73", khaki uniform and dress jacket, newspaper articles, photograph, a bottle of "Task Force Special Ale" issued by the Sunday Mirror, a Falkland Islands 50 pence bank note and a folder of letters congratulating Major Douglas on receiving his MBE.Major Douglas joined the army in the 1970's and during an extremely varied career served in Northern Ireland for four and a half months during the height of the Troubles. In one of the highlights of this tour his squadron was given the task of demolishing the Creggan Wall which separated Catholic and Protestant estates in Londonderry.  He also served in Germany, Canada and Belize where he was seconded to the Governor's Office to help staff the Independence celebrations in 1981.After the Argentinians invaded the Falkland Islands on 2nd April 1982, Major Douglas's 11 Squadron (he was second-in-command at the time) was part of the Task Force deployed to regain control of the territory, of which, much like the rest of the population of the UK, he had never heard before. First they spent a few weeks loading up equipment and supplies, as their primary task was to provide a forward operating base (FOB) for the Harrier Force providing critical air cover during the operation. After supplies were loaded, the squadron departed in early May and met up with the rest of the Task Force on Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic where an RAF air base had been established. 11 Squadron then sailed to the Falklands on the RFA Sir Bedivere and went ashore on the 23rd May as part of the initial landings to Port San Carlos. Unfortunately, the ship carrying the supplies that the squadron had spent several weeks preparing was torpedoed by the Argentinian Air Force so they improvised with what remaining supplies were available. The Argentinian forces surrendered on 14th June, 74 days after they first invaded. 11 Squadron was amongst the first troops sent into Stanley, the capital of the territory, to clear the landmines and make it safe. The town normally had a population of around 900. However, in the aftermath of the conflict there were some 3,000 British troops and 10,000 Argentinian troops, overwhelming the infrastructure. Major Douglas and the rest of 11 Squadron eventually returned to Britain in mid-September after successfully ensuring the town of Stanley was safe and secure for its inhabitants.Major Douglas was awarded his MBE in 1985 whilst back in the Falklands with 11 Squadron. This time he was Commanding Officer, tasked with keeping the airfield operational as a bridgehead to deter any further invasion.  He also worked as a Staff Officer at the Ministry of Defence, doing ground work for various senior officers. In August 1990, he was asked to prepare a brief detailing the operational effectiveness of the army, which he prepared overnight. It was shown to Margaret Thatcher the next day, who used it in making the decision to commit a brigade to the Persian Gulf to retake Kuwait after the Iraqi invasion.

* London. Aveline (Pierre), Londres, Ville Capital du Royaume D'Angleterre, à Paris chez Charpentier rue St Jacques au Coq, circa 1685, hand coloured engraved 'pre-fire' prospect of London, key plate below image, torn with loss in the upper right corner, replaced in facsimile, several repaired marginal closed tears, 345 x 525 mm, mountedQty: (1)NOTESAlthough the image shows St Pauls with a spire as well as the Globe Theatre and the old London bridge including the impaled heads of those unfortunate enough to have displeased the crown; the image was almost certainly created after the fire of 1666. The British Library copy of this print is given a date of 1665, presumably because of the lack of a dome on St Pauls, but it is unlikely that Aveline saw London prior to the Great Fire of 1666 as he was born in 1656. The artist probably plagiarised the image from Visscher as it perpetuates the error of the fictitious 'north bend in the River Thames. There is a second state of this print showing St Pauls 'post-fire' with a dome but this early state is scarce. Note the artist in the lower right corner sketching the panorama on a drawing board.

Lyndwood (William). Constitutiones provinciales ecclesiae Anglica[na]e, Westminster: Wynkyn de Worde, 15 April 1499, signatures A-S8, 142 leaves (of 144: lacking K1 and S8, the latter blank except for printer's device verso) , black letter, 21 lines and headline, woodcut of a bishop to a1 recto, occasional light soiling and damp-staining, a1 more strongly marked and dust-soiled, and with restored loss to fore corners touching a few letters of title recto and headline and initial capital verso, frequent contemporary marginalia and corrections in black ink (often trimmed), later ink annotations to title and colophon, later vellum, small square 8vo (12.9 x 8.9 cm)Qty: (1)NOTESProvenance: 1) St Mary's Seminary, Oscott, Sutton Coldfield, United Kingdom, without library markings, but deaccessioned sometime in the 1960s-70s and acquired by John Lawson (1932-2019), bookseller, who traded (as E. M. Lawson) in Sutton Coldfield until 1968. St Mary's sold about a quarter of their rare-book collection the 1960s-70s, and these books have no library markings; in the late 1980s and early 1990s St Mary's sold off further books from their collections, and these usually are marked. The lot is sold with the express permission of St Mary's Seminary. 2) Thence by descent. Beale T402; Bod-Inc-L208; Duff 280 (citing this copy); ESTC S104884; Goff L-415; ISTC il00415000; STC 17104. Second Wynkyn de Worde edition, an English incunable, one of seven copies known. The remaining copies are held by Lambeth Palace, Corpus Christi (Oxford), the Bodleian Library and the John Rylands Library in the United Kingdom, and the Folger Library and the Grolier Glub in the United States. Written between 1422 and 1432, the Provinciale is the classic account of English canon law, collecting the most important ecclesiastical degrees enacted by the archbishops of Canterbury between the Council of Oxford in 1222 and the archiepiscopate of Henry Chichele, at whose encouragement the book was written. 'The Reformation did not curtail its currency in England. Because the scope of ecclesiastical jurisdiction in England was not fundamentally changed during the sixteenth century, ecclesiastical lawyers continued to use the Provinciale . Its influence has been quite long-lasting. Edmund Gibson testified to its influence upon later generations in his Codex juris ecclesiastici Anglicani (1713), and in the twentieth century it was used in the draft revision of English canon law of 1947 produced by the Vaisey Commission . The relevance of its treatment of English ecclesiastical practice recommended it even to English common lawyers. Their citation of the glosses of the Provinciale when questions of ecclesiastical law arose in the royal courts is a continuing feature in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century reports' (R. H. Helmholz in ODNB ). In the nineteenth century it was the subject of a now legendary debate between F. W. Maitland and William Stubbs on the authority of provincial versus papal legislation in the medieval period. The work was first printed at Oxford in 1483 by Theodoric Rood, and by Wynkyn in 1496. A copy of the 1496 edition was sold at Sotheby's in 1987 (23 October); four copies of Rood's edition (all imperfect) were sold there between 1913 and 1947. Wynkyn's 1499 edition is noteworthy as one of the last books he printed before leaving his Westminster premises for London in 1500/01, a move which has been identified with a new publishing policy by which Wynkyn 'turned away from the courtly material favoured by Caxton , which had led him to settle at Westminster, to religious, popular, and educational books, which were better distributed from London' (N. F. Blake in ODNB ). We trace no copy of the 1499 edition in auction records.

Basilio Sancho de Santa Justa y Rufina (1728-1788) nominated Archbishop of Manila in 1766. He found himself in conflict with the Jesuits, until their expulsion in 1788, as well as with the administration of Governor Raón and his commissioner Basaraz, who were both later accused of negligence in their political duties and dismissed. The Archbishop undertook a number of inspection tours in 1773-1775 to counter the friars' accusations that the native clergy lacked intellectual acumen and sufficient training. The resistance of the Catholic Church to the appointment of Filipino priests was based more on race than on their fitness for office. The resentment of the Filipino priests finally gave rise to the Gomburza movement in 1872, and subsequently the secularisation issue became a major factor in the Revolution of 1896.
