Pair: Lieutenant-Colonel A. F. F. Bloomfield, 5th Madras Native Infantry and Golconda Local Corps, who quelled a rebellion in the Godavery District during the Indian Mutiny, and went on to command two further local forces in putting down disturbances between 1858-1862. He was slightly wounded during the last expedition, and received the thanks of the Madras Government on three separate occasions India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Pegu (Ensign A. F. Bloomfield. 5th Madras N.I.); Indian Mutiny 1857-59, no clasp (Capt. A. F. Bloomfield, Golconda Local Corps.) light contact marks, otherwise very fine, last scarce to unit (2) £700-£900 --- Alleyne Fitzherbert Fenton Bloomfield was born on 18 June 1832, and was the son of J. C. Bloomfield of Dusseldorf, Germany. He was baptised in Belleek, County Fermanagh, and educated in Dusseldorf and Aix la Chappelle. Bloomfield was appointed Ensign in the Indian Army, 25 May 1850, and arrived in India in September of the same year. He served with the 5th Madras N.I. during the Second Burma War, accompanied the Martaban Column to Tanghoo; and was present in the attack and capture of Gongah and other minor affairs. Bloomfield advanced to Lieutenant, Indian Staff Corps in November 1856. During the Indian Mutiny he was sent on Special Service in command of a detachment of 237 Golconda Sebundies (a local corps of militia) to suppress the disturbance in the Hill Tracts of the Godavery District in 1857-58. A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Godavery District in the Presidency of Madras by Henry Morris, first published London, 1878, gives an account of the operations of the Golconda Sebundies under Bloomfield: ‘This year was, however, marked by far more serious occurrences than an adverse season and increased prices. The anxiety felt throughout Southern India, on account of the great military mutiny in the north, was felt in full proportion in this District... Some apprehension was experienced during the Mohurrum, which that year took place in August, while the result of the deadly struggle in the North-West Province was undecided. Delhi was still untaken, and Lucknow unrelieved.... Kárukonda Subbáreddi was the head man of Koratúru, a village on the Godavery not far from the Gorge. He had been anxious to certain rich widow in marriage for his son; but hearing that she had become the concubine of Sunkaraswámi, the village munsiff or magistrate of Buttayagúdem, he attempted with a large body of his Koi followers to carry her off by force from his protection. Failing in the immediate object of his raid, he plundered the village, and retreated with a quantity of booty and cattle to the village of the widow’s late husband, where he was reinforced by other Reddis [local chiefs] with a considerable number of followers.’ The Acting Head-Assistant Magistrate gathered a force of 70 peons, and advanced to address the situation in the plundered village. Upon their arrival the marauding forces had departed, and they returned to Buttayagúdem having taken a few prisoners for questioning. Early next morning ‘he found that his small party was surrounded by an overwhelming number of hill-men under Subbáreddi and his son, armed with matchlocks and bows and arrows. The peons with him failed to stand their ground. He was consequently compelled to release his prisoners, to surrender the recovered property, and finally to retreat. Sunkaraswámi was carried off by the insurgents, and was taken to the hills, where he was murdered.’ (Ibid) The above was reported to the Collector, and two companies of Sappers and Miners under the command of Captain Rose were sent out in response. The detachment advanced into the hills in order to find and engage the insurgents. They failed to do this over the course of two weeks, and were increasingly beset by jungle fever and engaged in guerilla warfare. As a consequence, ‘the campaign was continued by a Sibbandi or Revenue Corps, which was embodied for that purpose, and placed under the command of Captain Alleyne F. F. Bloomfield. Subbáreddi and seven other ringleaders were captured, and were sentenced to suffer capital punishment... Subbáreddi and Korla Sítárámayya, who had been proved to have been one of the most active and desperate of the leaders in the rebellion, having been convicted of participation in Sunkaraswámi’s murder, as well as the murder of another, were executed at Buttayagúdem, the scene of their crime, on October 7, 1858. Korla Venkata Subbáreddi, half-brother of Sítárámayya, also an active leader, and Guruguntla Kommireddi, who had assisted in the murder of Sunkaraswámi, were hanged at Pólavaram on the same day. On the same occasion Kárukonda Tammireddi, Subbáreddi’s brother, was executed at Tútigunta. He had joined in the rebellion, and had, with his own hand, shot a man who was conveying a message from the camp of the officer commanding the corps.’ (Ibid) After the rebellion had successfully been put down Bloomfield received the thanks of the Madras Government. He commanded a detachment of the Golconda Sebundies later the same year during disturbances in the Golconda Zemindary, and received the thanks of the Madras Government and approbation of His Excellency the Commander in Chief. Bloomfield advanced to Captain, and his force was amalgamated into the new organisation of the Mofussil Police in 1861-62. He was appointed Superintendent of the Godavery District the same year, and commanded the Civil Force sent to quell the disturbances in the Rumpah Country in the Godavery District in 1862. Bloomfield was slightly wounded, and received the thanks of the Madras Government for the third time. Bloomfield advanced to Lieutenant-Colonel in May 1876, and retired in May 1878. During his service he held the appointments of: Adjutant Golconda Sebundies 1855; Commanded Rajahmundry Sebundies 1858; Acting Military Medber Sanitary Commission, December 1864; Acting Cantonment Magistrate, Trichinopoly, April 1865; Superintendent Rajahmundry Central Jail, January 1866; Acting Superintendent of Family Payments, Madras, February 1867; Acting Police Magistrate, Madras, February 1868 and Superintendent Salem Jail, October 1868. Colonel Bloomfield died, 21 April 1915. Sold with copied Cadet papers, Record of Service, medal roll entries, and a modern reprint of A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Godavery District in the Presidency of Madras by Henry Morris, first published London, 1878, which contains a short account of the operations of the Golconda Sebundies under Bloomfield.

The Hans Schifferle Collection 1982 Yamaha XS1100Registration no. not registeredFrame no. 2H9 140990Engine no. 2H9 140990'For straight line comfort and effortless speeding, there's little to match it,' declared Bike magazine, summing up its first encounter with Yamaha's XS1100 behemoth back in 1978. Nowadays, a machine weighing in excess of 600lbs, producing 66.5ft/lb of torque, and with a top speed of more than 130mph (a 'Super Cruiser' in today's terminology) would scarcely raise an eyebrow, but with that specification 40 years ago the XS1100 seemed to have arrived from another planet. The ultimate transcontinental mile-muncher of its day, the XS1100 featured shaft drive, twin overhead camshafts, triple disc brakes, alloy wheels, electrical accessory power outlet, adjustable suspension, fairing mounts, and a surprisingly extensive tool kit. Its class-leading specification aside, what the XS1100 was all about was torque with a capital 'T', most of those 66.5ft/lb being available between 2,000 and 6,500 revs, right where they are most useful.Un-restored and beautifully presented considering the 47,543 kilometres recorded, this XS1100 was purchased new by Hans who rode considerable distances aboard and took great pride in preserving the bike in excellent condition. The exhaust was replaced some years ago (with a new unmarked Yamaha system) and the machine has been regularly maintained. Accompanying documentation consists of a German Fahrzeugschein; expired TüV (MoT) certificate and correspondence; an owner's manual; and a service booklet (last stamped in 1988 at 38,000km).Footnotes:* Import VAT Low RateImport tax at the reduced rate of 5% of the Hammer Price and Buyers Premium will apply should the lot remain in the UK.N (NOVA): This lot is subject to a fee of £125 + VAT payable by the Buyer, to undertake the relevant NOVA and C88 (Customs) clearance applications. Property of a deceased's estate c.1983 Montesa-Honda MH200 TrialsRegistration no. not registeredFrame no. to be advisedEngine no. to be advisedFounded in the mid-1940s in Barcelona, Montesa entered road racing in the early 1950s but its major impact on motorcycle sport would be away from the tarmac, the Scorpion and Capra moto-crossers and Cota trials iron being the equal of any of their contemporaries. Despite their many competition successes, by 1981 Montesa was in a sorry state financially and needed a major injection of capital to survive. With the Spanish government's approval, Honda came to Montesa's rescue, gaining a strategic European manufacturing base in the process, and now own the firm outright. An affordable entry into Twin-Shock trials competitions, this Montesa-Honda was purchased somewhere between 2010 and 2015 and last ran prior to 2016. Its mechanical condition is not known and thus the machine is sold strictly as viewed. Letters by Scottish Women. An interesting collection of 40 plus manuscript letters spanning the period 1686 to 1820s. Some of the earlier letters are to Baillie Gordon of Inverness & his connections, the later ones to James & Duncan Grant of Bught, lawyers in Inverness & Provosts thereof. It is believed that these were collected by Duncan G. Warrand with a view to writing an article on the education of women, in any case, they demonstrate the development of handwriting during the period in question. The letter dated 31st March 1745 from Isabella Cuthbert, a serving woman but obviously very literate, highlights the privations of her life in the capital at the time of the "unhappie wars".

Charles Edward Dixon (British, 1872-1934)'The Fleet at Portland', 1912signed, dated and titled 'Charles Dixon. 1912' (lower right) watercolour 15 x 19.7cm (5 7/8 x 7 3/4in).Footnotes:Two years after this painting is dated the old battleship HMS Hood was scuttled in the southern entrance of Portland to reduce the risk of a new threat, submarine penetration, and the anchorage had now become a huge and secure harbour and indeed remains one of the largest man made harbours in the world. Whilst the harbour was not deep there was certainly water enough even for the deep draught capital ships of the first half of the 20th century and with its quick access to the Channel it was used very extensively by the fleet - as seen here in 1912. At left foreground (in shadow) is what appears to be a battle cruiser of the newly completed Lion Class and also lying at anchor in the great harbour we glimpse a further battle cruiser or two and some dreadnought battleships - including one that looks like Neptune - as well as some armoured cruisers. Steam Pinnaces are also in evidence as they run duty errands for senior officers and provide liberty boats for those able to get ashore for an hour or so.It was from Portland and Weymouth Bay that the First Fleet (shortly on the outbreak of hostilities in 1914 to be renamed the Grand Fleet) was sailed in great secrecy by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr Churchill, just days before World War 1 was declared. The First Sea Lord, Admiral Prince Louis of Battenberg, had personally ensured that the First Fleet was not dispersed on completion of the great naval review at Spithead some 10 days earlier for the international situation was getting more worrying by the day. And so as Europe slid towards war Portland became the anchorage for the huge gathering of dreadnoughts (some two dozen) whilst many of the cruisers and most of the destroyer flotillas crowded out Weymouth Bay. In those final days of July 1914 - and with Churchill agitating lest the fleet be subjected to a pre-emptive attack before war was actually declared - the ships in Portland and Weymouth were sailed in secrecy for Scapa Flow under cover of darkness. In the First Lord's dramatic words: 'We may now picture this great fleet, with its flotillas and cruisers, steaming slowly out of Portland harbour, squadron by squadron, scores of gigantic castles of steel wending their way across the misty, shining sea, like giants bowed in anxious thought. We may picture them again as darkness fell, eighteen miles of warships running at high speed and in absolute blackness through the narrow Straights, bearing with them into the broad waters of the North Sea the safeguard of considerable affairs.'For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Lot 91

Frank Watson Wood (British, 1862-1953)Portland, Dorset: Atlantic Fleet Capital Ships, 1921signed and dated 'FRANK WOOD 1921' (lower right), inscribed with each of the ship's names (lower edge) watercolour 17.5 x 75cm (6 7/8 x 29 1/2in).Footnotes:The protected anchorage at Portland – formed by Chesil Beach and the south Dorset coast mainland to the west and north, and the Isle of Portland to the south – has been a spacious base for ships of the Royal Navy for generations. King Henry VIII built Portland Castle and Sandsfoot Castle to defend the anchorage but the navy was keen to enclose it further by providing protection from the south and east; and so construction of the south breakwater arm was started in 1849, finally completing some 25 years later. The early years of the 20th century saw the rising threat of war against Germany dominate naval strategic thinking and as the Royal Navy developed the dreadnought battleship and then raced to outbuild the German fleet, Portland anchorage, strategically well placed and therefore undoubtedly useful was, however, considered too vulnerable to attack from the east. Two further breakwater arms were accordingly constructed together with more forts and batteries ashore, and two small forts were also built on the seaward ends of the breakwater arms. With the scuttling of the old battleship HMS Hood in the southern entrance in 1914 to reduce the risk of submarine penetration, the anchorage had now become a huge and secure harbour and indeed remains one of the largest man made harbours in the world. The Royal Navy continued to make good use of it for the following 70 years or so and remained there until 1995 when defence cuts forced its closure as a naval base. And in 2012 the former naval base and adjacent Weymouth Bay - from where the Grand Fleet's dreadnoughts and escorting flotillas sailed just hours before war was declared in 1914 - became the venue for the sailing events of the 2012 Olympics: – a fitting use indeed. Whilst the harbour was not deep there was certainly water enough even for the deep draught capital ships of the first half of the 20th century and with its quick access to the Channel it was used very extensively by the fleet. In this 1921 painting Frank Watson Wood shows heavy units of the Atlantic Fleet at their overnight anchorage in the great harbour. To the left Wood has painted HMS Ramillies (Captain Cecil D S Raikes RN), HMS Revenge (Captain H J S Brownrigg DSO RN) wearing the flag of Rear Admiral Sir Rudolph Bentinck KCMG CB, Rear Admiral 1st Battle Squadron; and HMS Royal Oak (Captain Percival Hall-Thompson CMG RN). In the foreground to the right lie HMS Queen Elizabeth (Captain Geoffrey Blake RN) wearing the flag of the Commander-in-Chief Atlantic Fleet, Admiral Sir Charles Madden Bt GCB GCVO KCMG; HMS Barham (Captain R C Dalglish RN), flagship of Vice Admiral Commanding 1st Battle Squadron, Vice Admiral Sir William Nicholson KCB; HMS Valiant (Captain Cecil Staveley CMG RN); and HMS Warspite (Captain F Clifton-Brown CB CMG RN). The fifth ship of the class, HMS Malaya (Captain Percy Royds CMG RN) was absent in the Far East, on a courtesy visit to her donors in Malaya and carrying HRH The Duke of Connaught to India enroute. The artist, Frank Wood, originally a school master from the Borders, had moved down south in the early 1900s and painted many commissions for serving officers of the time. Such was his reputation that he was commissioned by HM King George VI in 1937 to paint the senior flagship (Queen Elizabeth again) at the Coronation Review of May that year to give as a present to the battleship's wardroom; and two years later he was Travelling Artist with the Royal party when the King and Queen visited Canada and America in summer 1939.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Provenance: purchased by William Gilbert, racehorse trainer and then by descent to the current owner. Fred Archer (1857-1886) was an English flat race jockey of the Victorian era, and is considered by many to have been one of the greatest jockeys of all time. During his career he had 2,748 wins, which included five Derby's, four Oaks, six St Legers, three 1000 Guineas, four 2000 Guineas, The Prince of Wales Stakes three times and The Champion Stakes four times. In France he won the Prix du Jockey Club twice and the Grand Prix de Paris three times. He was the British flat racing Champion Jockey 1874-1886. In 1883 he married Helen Rose Dawson, the eldest daughter of John Dawson. It was the celebrity wedding of the day, in Newmarket the High Street was fully decorated, and the town were all involved. For the public, an Ox was roasted whole on The Severals and a ball was held at the Rutland Arms. After the ox roast, the femurs of the fore and hind legs were mounted in silver to form two pairs of candlesticks. William Gilbert bought one of the pairs. In 1884 the couple's son was born but died shortly after. The following year his wife died giving birth to a daughter, she was only 23. These events sent him into a deep depression. He was 5 foot 10 tall and of slim build and his fight to keep his weight down with fasting and constant Turkish baths took their toll. In 1886 he rode St Mirin in the Cambridgeshire for the Duchess of Montrose, riding in flimsy silks on a cold November date, he caught a severe chill and became seriously ill. He developed typhoid fever, his mind began to wander and he picked up his revolver and shot himself . He was just 29 years old.

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Audubon's Warbler" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the painting which was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the limited edition collection of The Songbirds of the Fifty States. Each cover was postmarked on the anniversary of statehood in the appropriate state capital. The tiny Audubon's Warbler bears blue-gray plumage which breaks in five spots to reveal lovely golden feathers. This hearty woodland beauty often nests at extremely high altitudes, then spends the cold winter months in the same area, only at lower elevations. Though the weather may bring cold and snow, he rarely forsakes his western home. When spring arrives and the ice and snow begin to melt, it is one of the first birds to sing its cheerful song from high in the evergreens. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed. (B06847)

Lot 439

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Eastern Bluebird" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the limited edition collection of The Songbirds of the Fifty States. Each cover was postmarked on the anniversary of statehood in the appropriate state capital. There is no more blue than that of a bluebird returning in the spring. Even before winter has retreated and the first hints of green caress the meadows and forests, the bluebird will make its colorful appearance in northern climates. One cannot help but notice this bright beacon in an otherwise drab late winter landscape, for it is as if a bit of the sky had been plucked out and brought down to earth. In the United States, there are three distinct species of bluebird, all of the genus Sialia. The Eastern bluebird is found in the fields and orchards of the eastern half of the United States. The Western bluebird finds the hills, forests and farms of the Far West to its liking, while the Mountain bluebird makes the crags and prairie of Rocky Mountain states its home. Bluebirds nest in tree cavities, and such places normally make very good homes. However, the cutting of dead trees for firewood or aesthetics as well as the introduction of Old World English sparrows and starlings, has sent the Eastern bluebird in particular into a serious decline. Consequently, some ornithologists and bird enthusiasts have acted to help out the bluebird by constucting bird houses designed especially for the Eastern bluebird. The early results are promising and it appears as if this azure beauty will continue to brighten the drab fields of pre-spring. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed. Erik Nitsche (Swiss, 1908 - 1998) "Cube Houses in the Netherlands" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor/ink painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Netherlands Europa 1987 Modern Art - Architecture stamp issued May 12, 1987. The unusual and interesting houses pictured in this artwork are Cube Houses designed by architect Piet Blom. The houses are located in Drenthe, which is a province in the northeast of the Netherlands. Piet Blom was born in the capital city of Amsterdam in 1943. He belonged to the most important representatives of the new Dutch structuralism, and he later specialized in urbanism. Although the uniqueness of Blom's Cube Houses may make them appear to be the product of a personal whim or self-expression, the house are really an end result of the intellectual, social, and technical conditions of our modern times. This analytical, structural approach distinguishes the design of the 20th century from previous periods and from it stems the liberation of the modern designer from preconveived notions of styles or forms. Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Argentina" Signed lower left. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the U.N. 22c Argentina Flags of the U.N. Series stamp issued September 18, 1987. The second largest country in South America, Argentina occupies most of the southern part of the continent between the Andes mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Argentina is a rugged and beautiful country extending from her towering Andes Mountains in the west to her exotic sun-drenched beaches in the east. The country contains the breathtaking Iguassu Falls, and the famous Christ of the Andes statue on the border of Chile and Argentina. In the southern part of the country lies the sub-antarctic Patagonia -- a very large and dry windswept plateau that contains some of the world's most unique animals, including penguins, sea lions and elephant seals. Argentina's largest city and capital, Buenos Aires, holds nearly half of her total population. Argentines are a blend of many European nationalities, although Spanish and Italians are dominant. Along the country's rugged plains, Gauchos -- or Argentine cowboys -- herd cattle and sheep. They are famous for their ability to break wild horses. Argentina exports few industrial products, depending largely on agricultural goods for its revenues. It is the world's third largest producer of meat, fourth largest producer of wool, and ranks fourth in the number of sheep and cattle per capita. Argentina is also one of the most important exporters of wheat in the world. The rest of the country's export products include corn, soybeans, cotton and hides. Argentina is a beautiful country with a panorama of natural resources, breathtaking vistas and famous sights. Image Size: 14.25 x 12.25 in. Overall Size: 17.5 x 15.25 in. Unframed. (B11044)

Dawson Collection, DNW Auction 156, 21 March 2019, lot 65. Bristol was taken by the Royalists under Prince Rupert on 27 july 1643, and on 3 August Charles I made his entry into the city. Bristol was of great importance, as it gave the King a stronghold in the west and access to the Bristol Channel. A garrison was assigned to it and it became, after Oxford, the second capital, and remained so until it was surrendered to the troops of the Commonwealth under Sir Thomas Fairfax on 11 September 1645. Pay was required for the troops, and the expenses of the civil administration had to be met, so money had to be provided. It was therefore decided to establish a mint, which was set up in Bristol castle under the expert mintmaster, Thomas Bushell. It was actually an advantage for Bushell to have a branch at Bristol, as he could bring silver direct from Aberystwyth by sea

Lot 142

Charles I (1625-1649), York mint, Halfcrown, Gp 1 [type 1], mm. lion, grassy ground line, square-topped garnished shield, c r at sides, 11.37g/12h (Bull 550; Besly 1A; SCBI Brooker 1076, same dies; N 2309; S 2863). Small of flan, otherwise very fine or better, very rare £1,000-£1,200 --- Provenance: SNC February 1973 (1239); B.J. Dawson Collection, DNW Auction 156, 21 March 2019, lot 104. For a time in 1642 York was Charles I's 'second capital’, He arrived on 19 March and spent five months based either there or at Beverley, whence he directed operations against the port of Hull. The establishment of a mint at York had been planned long before the outbreak of formal hostilities. Nicholas Briot, the king's engraver, was summoned to the city at the start of May. Written evidence confirms that a mint was established by July 1642 and was almost certainly located in St William's College in Minster Yard. Coins were being produced by the following January and production probably ceased by the end of March 1644. The city surrendered to the Parliamentarians on 15 July
