Ancient Kingdoms of the Nile, Paris, 1997, pp. 224-5, the detailed catalogue of a major exhibition held at the Institut du monde arabe, Paris, 1997. 622 grams total, 22.5cm including stand (9"). From a UK private collection formed in the 1980s; with Bluett and Sons, London, and also Sheppard & Cooper in 1979; formerly the property of a UK private collector who acquired it from J.J. Klejman of Madison Avenue, New York, in the 1960s; accompanied by a scholarly note TL 5285 by Dr Ronald Bonewitz; this lot has been checked against the Interpol Database of stolen works of art and is accompanied by AIAD certificate number no.163503-10052. In 591 BC the pharaoh Psamtik invaded Egypt, ending the 25th (Kushite, Nubian) Dynasty which had its capital at Thebes, 716-656 BC. They withdrew to Nubia (modern Sudan) to found the royal Napata and Meroe dynasties. Their pharaohs continued Egyptian traditions, building a great temple to the god Amun at Gebel Barkal and making their royal burials at Nuri and Mero under brick-built pyramids with steeper sides than their Egyptian forerunners. These were excavated by Professor George A. Reisner directing the Harvard-Boston Museum of Fine Arts Expedition, 1916-23. The pyramids had been robbed in antiquity and were much denuded but important finds were made, notably ushabtis which the ancient robbers had ignored. The Pharaoh Senkamanisken (643-623 BC) of the Napata Dynasty (656-575 BC), was the son of Atlanersa and Queen Maloteral and third after the great pharaoh Taharqo; he was buried in Pyramid Nuri 3 at Nuri. In February 1917, Reisner found 1,277 shabtis of the king divided into five groups made of serpentine (here now properly identified as rhyolite, a black igneous rock), and faience. Despite the large numbers of shabtis there are very few available in the art market. Large numbers lie in serried ranks in storage trays in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Some were donated to major museums and a few were given to several societies with religious connections. Over the years these societies have rationalized their collections and most of the few shabtis in the market originate from those societies’ disposals and then passing through private collectors’ hands. Unlike Egyptian royal shabtis those of Senkamenisken and his grandfather Taharqo (he had 1,070 in Pyramid Nuri 1) have portrait features. An example similar to the present lot was sold at Christie's, New York, 8 June 2003, for USD138,000. Fine condition, repaired. ( A video of this lot can be viewed on Timeline Auctions website.)

Tom Lydon (American, B. 1944) "Peace Protecting Genius" Signed upper left. Original Mixed Media on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 19c Official Mail stamp issued May 24, 1991. The year was 1791 and the United States was only a few years old when French engineer Pierre-Charles L'Enfant completed his layout plans for the capital city of the young nation. L'Enfant was a visionary with a strong bent for Baroque landscape architecture; even then he planned for a capital city based upon fifty states and 500,000,000 citizens. The central point of his elaborate plan was the U.S. Capitol Building. The building was designed so that it had a broad vista down a long expanse of park known as The Mall. Although many of L'Enfant's original designs were not incorporated into the Washington, D.C. of today, the city is among the most beautiful in the world and the U.S. Capitol is still its central point. The building is an emblem of democracy and a work of art in its own right. A fine example is the Apotheosis of Democracy, a sculpture on the east front of the House Pediment. This artwork was based upon a portion of the colossal sculpture and depicts Peace Protecting Genius. Peace stands before an olive tree, her right arm symbolically protecting Genius, who rests at her feet and holds the torch of Immortality. Carved from Georgia White marble, the sculpture was completed in 1916 by Paul Wayland Bartlett to adorn the great building of democracy. Image Size: 13.25 x 11.5 in. Overall Size: 20 x 14.5 in. Unframed. (B12980)

Lot 364

Tom McNeely (Canadian, B. 1935) "Nicaragua Landscape" Signed lower left. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Mint Stamps of the World Collectors Panel for the Nicaragua stamp issue of Ancient Ceramics. A congenial sun reflects off the crystal blue waters of Lake Nicaragua, the largest freshwater lake in Central America. Geologists believe that once this lake was part of the ocean, but volcanic activity raised the land and cut off these sea waters from the ocean. Over time, rivers pouring into the lake made the waters fresh. The marine life trapped inside the lake adapted from salt water to freshwater so that today, Lake Nicaragua holds the only species of freshwater sharks and tarpin in the world. This lake is only one of the many treasures awaiting visitors to Nicaragua. The country is also a land of many active volcanoes that sometimes reawaken into a dramatic fury of fire and ash. Nicaraguans have become accustomed to these fiery inhabitants of their land. In fact, the ash from these volcanoes has made the land some of the most fertile in Central America. On the eastern side of Nicaragua, a lush tropical jungle grows, supporting innumerable species of exotic orchids, trees, and birds. The haunting cries of the ocelot and the jaguar can also be heard emanating from the dark jungle. On the western coast, the rich soil supports thriving crops of coffee, cotton, sugar and bananas. This is the most developed part of Nicaragua where the majority of the population lives. The elegant capital city of Managua looks out upon Lake Managua, another large freshwater lake. Throughout the country, Spanish colonial architecture combines with the conveniences of technology to create a fascinating nation. Image Size: 23.75 x 17.25 in. Overall Size: 30 x 22.25 in. Unframed. Lot 401

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Cardinal" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This artwork was originally published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the limited edition collection of The Songbirds of the Fifty States. Each cover was postmarked on the anniversary of statehood in the appropriate state capital. The Cardinal is distinguished by its flamboyant looks and proud voice. The male dresses in full red plumage and wears a proud crest that he raises and lowers at will. A black mark, a stout coral-red bill, and dark red feet also mark the bird. The female is much more subdued in her dress. She has an olive-gray back, dull reddish wings and crest, and soft pink-brown underparts. Unlike the female of most species, the female Cardinal is as accomplished a vocalist as the male. As the female weaves the deep cup of bark strips, rootlets, and grass and lines it with fine grass or hair, the male follows her about and voices his most melodious song. He feeds her during the two weeks that she incubates the eggs and while she prepares for a second brood, he often assumes the care of the fledglings. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed. (B07106)

Lot 402

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Purple Finch" Signed middle right. Not purple at all, the beautiful Purple Finch looks like a Sparrow that has been dipped in red wine. Indeed, no member of the Finch family is more distinctively attired than this songster of the eastern woods. But, just as impressive as his regally-hued plumage is his rapturous melody. The Purple Finch has a delightful warble that is welcome wherever he makes his home. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed. (B07208)

Lot 403

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Clark's Nutcracker" Signed lower right. Named for one of the leaders of the Lewis and Clark expedition which crossed the continent in the early nineteenth century, the Clark's Nutcracker is a distinctively attired bird which shares many of the characteristics of the Crow. The gray bird walks sedately through his forest domain like a Crow and he has the build of a small Crow. Yet, the Nutcracker also clings to tree trunks, pecking for insects much like the Woodpecker does. A resident of the Rocky Mountains and the Sierras, the Clark's Nutcracker soars along the timberline, sometimes plunging headlong into deep canyons. Wings folded for a daring display, he plummets toward the canyon floor. Then, opening his wings at the last possible moment, he breaks his dive and again shoots skyward. Although his aerial performance is daring, the Nutcracker is perhaps best known for his powerful bill and unique song. This bill operates much like a crowbar to pry seeds from their shells. Often the Nutcracker will venture into a Colorado campsite to be handfed Sunflower seeds. High amid Colorado Pines, the Nutcracker's harsh call may grate on some ears, to others it has a musical quality like a child's tin trumpet. In any case, these lovely gray birds of the Colorado Rockies are well known wherever their guttural cries break the mountain stillness. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed.
