NUREMBERG CHRONICLE, Hartmann Schedel, Liber Chronicarum, Nuremberg, Anton Koberger for Sebald Schreyer and Sebastian Kammermeister, 12th July 1493. Imperial 2o, 402 x 335mm; collation [20], cclxvi, [5] cclxvii- ccxcix, [1]; 325 of 326 leaves, lacking blank. Woodcut title (1r) laid down. 1809 woodcut illustrations from 645 blocks. Initials supplied in colour - red, blue, green and gold. Capital letters highlighted in red, and woodcuts in skilful old hand colouring throughout. Worn seventeenth century calf with armorial crest in gilt on the front board and label to spine: `Historia Aetatum Mundi`. Provenance: Crossley family of Todmorden and by descent. An unpublished family history records that the book was loaned to the Brotherton Library, Leeds University, between 1938 and 1956 and stored with incunabula underground by the National Library of Wales during World War Two. First Edition of the most extensively illustrated book of the fifteenth century. The Chonicle contains more illustrations than any previous publication from moveable type. The text covers the history of the world from the beginning to the date of publication. It is thought that around 1400 to 1500 copies of the Latin edition were published with around 400 still extant. The illustrations come from the workshop of Michael Wolgemut with his apprentice Albrecht Durer probably contributing to the publication. The text shows frequent finger marking and occasional page repairs. Many pages, particularly in the middle of the volume, have been reattached to page stubs. There is some waterstaining to the rear of the book. Folio ccxcix has been laid down in order to strengthen the holed map of Europe, with further paper repairs around the colophon. The marbled front free endpaper has adhered to the front board. The first two of the blank leaves called for (folios cclix and cclx) have headlines supplied in manuscript and may be later replacements. The woodcuts are excellent impressions and the colouring skilful and attractive. Comparison with other coloured examples of the book and the presence of coloured initials strongly suggests that the colouring is early or contemporary with publication (Illustrated)

Sussex – Worth indenture on 16 large leaves of vellum dated October 31st 1853^ being the conveyance of the Manor of Worth^ with the capital mansion of Rowfant^ farms^ mills and other residences^ between Henry Willet to C M Lampson. Document in fine fresh condition throughout with two complete manuscript schedules of property and a fine large manuscript estate plan executed in ink with wash colours^ and with each field numbered to relate to the schedules on the document. The Manor of Worth was situated near to modern day Crawley. Rowfant became the home of the poet and author Frederick Locker
A fine old dark green, white veined Marble Plinth in three sections, the tapering column support having spiral fluting and standing on an octagonal base and with a circular capital/platform to the top, 11 1/4`` diameter, 39 1/2`` high approx. Although from a different vendor this would be ideal for the display of the preceding lot, contrasting superbly with the white Marble of the Romanelli sculpture.

A VICTORIAN SANDSTONE SUNDIAL the 9 inch bronze horizontal dial indistinctly signed and with plain gnomon, on chamfered pillar with square capital, the sides with latin inscription and date 1838, on chamfered pillar with the raised initials EC/DT and stepped plinth, 106cm h The inscription reads: EDVARDVS T COKE DE BRIMINGTON ARMIG: ET DIANA NVPER TALBOT CROSBIE DE ARDFERT IN HIBERNIA CONIVX TEMPORIS NVNQVAM REDITVRI MEMORES ET FVTVRA SPERANTES. MONITOREM HVNC PONI CVRAVERVNT ANNO SALVTIS MDCCCXXXVIII. Erected at their home Brimington Hall (demolished 1931) the present sundial was commissioned by Colonel Edward Thomas Coke, DL, JP (1807-1888) of Brimington and Trusley, Derbyshire and Debdale Hall, Nottinghamshire. He married, in August 1835 Diana (d1895) daughter of the Rev. John Talbot-Crosbie of Ardfert Abbey, Co Kerry. They had three daughters. Colonel Coke was the son of D`Ewes Coke (d 1856) of Brookhill Hall, Pinxton, Nottinghamshire and Harriet Wright (d1815) of Mapperley Hall, Nottingham. A watercolour full-length portrait of Colonel Coke in uniform, when in Burma, painted jointly by himself and his wife, was sold from the Collection of Michael Appleby, Sotheby`s, 20 November 2000, lot 139. ++The bronze dial weathered and with green patina but probably original to the sone pillar, the capital with two large flat corner chips and minor edge knocks but in basically good original condition
