The bottom capital to the right hand column is a replacement. Both columns which appear to be yew wood are fairly crude and the left hand column has gouges and losses to the back. The door hinges as it should. The seat board is elevated on blocks and therefore the movement and case may not belong. The trunk door is not significantly warped but does not close correctly. It requires a catch. The sides of the trunk are in good order. The base is in generally good condition. The bottom plinth is old but a later addition. The movement does strike when advanced. We have the weight and pendulum and the clock is ticking but not for any great length of time.

* JOHN MACLAUCHLAN MILNE RSA (SCOTTISH 1885 - 1957), A PARIS SCENE oil on canvas board, signed 35cm x 26.5cm (13.78 x 10.43 inches) Framed. Provenance: Bequeathed to a Miss Nancy Rae by her former long term employer, a Falkirk (Scotland) Solicitor, and by descent. Note: A rare Paris painting from between 1920 and 1922 when Milne lived in the French capital. Seeing Cezanne's work for the first time was a eureka moment for Milne who until then had painted much like his father in a sedate and traditional style. He discovered a completely new freedom and walked the streets and sights of Paris painting what he saw, en plein air and with rapid, bold brush strokes. Above all, he discovered ''colour''. This very distinct Paris period saw Milne producing some of his most spontaneous and desirable work and usually on smaller scale artist boards. By 1922/3 he had moved to the French village of Lavardin and by 1924 he was in Cassis with Peploe and Cadell and beginning to conform much more to what became known as the Scottish Colourist style. Milne is often referred to as ''the fifth Scottish Colourist'' and yet his quality is at least the equal of much of the output of the other four. Even though Milne's paintings were widely exhibited in his lifetime at the very best venues to great success, it's probably because he never established a long term relationship with any one gallery or dealer that his paintings have been undervalued for many years. It took until 1987 before the first Milne painting reached the £20,000 mark at auction when ''Busy Paris Street Scene with Figures (1922)'' was sold by Christie's, Glasgow (lot 664, 28th April 1987 £20,000 hammer). The John Maclauchlan Milne Estate is now represented by Tom Hewlett's Portland Gallery (London) and unsurprisingly, his profile and values have been growing. A major exhibition ''Milne And The Colourist Connection'' will be staged at Portland Gallery (London) 21st September -13th October 2017.

A Post Medieval gold posy ring of D section, 16/17th century, the interior inscribed in capital text "I LYKE. MI CHOVS. TO. WEL. TO. CHANG", weight 9 grams, diameter 23mm. Sold with the H M Coroner report, treasure number 2016 T208, PAS database YORYM - C2732F. The inscription can be translated as "I Like my Choice Too Well To Change". Posy or Poesie (French for poem) rings have a short inscription engraved upon them; they were popular in the 16th-18th centuries in England and France. They were often used as lover's tokens, betrothal or wedding rings and are the forerunners of modern wedding bands, the often-rhymed mottos expressing feelings of love and fidelity. The rarest posy rings have ornate engraved exteriors, often with floral decoration, and sometimes also are inlaid with enamel. The British Museum has a collection of some 700 examples. See lot 175, sale 12th May 2017 for another posy ring sold by these rooms. This example was found by a metal detectorist on farmland outside of Brantingham, East Yorkshire, he had covered the field many times but as is often the case, when freshly ploughed items can move to the surface, which is what happened on this occasion. The land is believed to have formally been part of the Brantingham Thorpe Estate. Brantingham comes from the once noble family of de Brantingham who obtained the land in 1369; during the 14th century they held many notable positions in the land including Ralph de Brantingham, King's Chamberlain to Edward III from 1349, and Thomas de Brantingham, Lord Treasurer from 1369 to 1371 and Bishop of Exeter from 1370 until his death. Over the years the family waned and by the early 18th century the estate was owned by Hugh Mason of Hull, he was a large land owner who was involved in the redevelopment of land formally belonging to Charterhouse in central Hull and now called Mason Street. The estate was sold on a regular basis until acquired by Sir Tatton Sykes in 1867 and he remodelled the original Jacobean Manor House (and changed the name of the public house to Triton Inn, the same as the Sledmere estate public house).

1966 Austin Mini Cooper S PLEASE NOTE: This lot has been in store prior to arriving at the sale. The brakes were working when we photographed the car last month but now need attention. We suspect, but have not confirmed, a loss of brake fluid. - A RHD, 'home market' 1275 Cooper S that was supplied new via Moir & Baxter of Edinburgh - Originally finished in Almond Green with an Old English White roof and Porcelain Green upholstery with Dove Grey inserts - Treated to a full professional respray and mechanical reconditioning in 2008 and sparingly used as part of a private collection since then The chance meeting between John Cooper and Aurelio Lampredi at the 1959 Italian GP is now an established part of Mini folklore. Having charmed a very early 850cc model out of BMC and driven it to Monza, Cooper was accosted by Fiat engineer (and ex-Ferrari F1 designer) Lampredi. Infected by his old enemy's enthusiasm, the Italian asked to borrow the new wonder car. Returning several hours later, he heralded it as the future of automotive design before adding "if it weren't so ugly, I'd shoot myself". Unperturbed Cooper continued to harass Issigonis and BMC until they agreed to build a 'hot' version. Initially conceived as a homologation special, the Mini Cooper was launched in July 1961. Powered by an enlarged 997cc engine and benefiting from front disc brakes, it gave way to a succession of ever quicker variants culminating in the 1275 'S' of 1964. According to its accompanying British Motor Industry Heritage Trust certificate, this particular example - chassis C-A2S7 / 893013 - was built to right-hand drive, home market specification complete with fresh air heater, extra fuel tank and oil cooler on 16th September 1966. Originally painted in Almond Green with an Old English White roof and trimmed using Porcelain Green upholstery with Dove Grey inserts - the same livery it pleasingly sports today - the Austin was dispatched to supplying dealer Moir & Baxter Limited of Edinburgh some five days later. Fitted with a Goldseal (factory replacement) MKIII Cooper S engine at some stage, the Mini is further understood to have been re-shelled prior to entering the current ownership during 2008. Reportedly treated to a full professional respray and mechanical reconditioning that same year, the diminutive sports saloon shows an unwarranted 735 miles to its correct-type 120mph speedometer. Still retaining its original Fife 'FFG 927D' registration number, this appealing MKI Cooper S has journeyed down from the Scottish capital especially for the sale. PLEASE NOTE: All estimates are subject to a buyer's premium of 16.2% incl. VAT (@ 20%)
