Lot 23C

Roman, the Levant, late Imperial Period, ca. 3rd to 5th century CE. Composed of tiny stone tiles (tesserae/tessellae), including marble, slate, and mica, this mosaic panel shows a scene of two women interacting at a bathhouse. Both wear bracelets and necklaces; one is draped with a cloth that falls around her bare buttocks, while the other stands nude, with a cloth falling behind her. The nude woman has her visible arm raised, as if gesticulating in conversation. The small remaining fragment of the other woman's face reveals that it is turned back, as if listening. The colors of the women's bodies are warm, mostly pinks and darker reds with some white stones to highlight shadow and light. Mounted on frame with honeycomb backing. Size: 29" W x 44.25" H (73.7 cm x 112.4 cm); size on frame: 30.8" W x 46.5" H (78.2 cm x 118.1 cm)The women are in a room with clean, pale yellow walls, standing on a glossy grey floor, dappled with sparing areas of pale brown that make it appear to be glistening with water. The women's clothing is red, grey, and pale yellow, outlined in black to give the impression of folds. One area that shows particularly skillful artistic execution is where the partially clothed woman's knee bends, catching the fabric and bunching it. Mosaics (opus tesellatum) are some of our enduring images from the Roman world. They reveal everyday life, social interactions, and even things like clothing styles, personal ornament, and the interior of buildings in ways other styles of Roman art generally do not. A scene like this would have taken place in a bathhouse, an informal public space where women could mingle and speak with one another in a close social setting. This mosaic may have graced the wall or floor of a bathhouse, and was probably originally set into a large, ornate border, as many of the mosaics from the Roman Levant are. In the Roman province of Syria, which encompassed most of the ancient Near East/Levant, mosaics seem to have developed as a common art form relatively late, with most finds coming from the 3rd century CE or later. Syria was one of Rome's wealthiest provinces, but it was also far removed from Rome itself and Roman culture was overlaid on enduring cultural traditions from Hellenistic Greece and the great civilizations that came before it. Antioch-on-the-Orontes (modern day Antakya, Turkey), was the capital of northern Roman Syria, and its excavations in the 1930s revealed more than three hundred mosaic pavements - of which many embellished public baths. Often the known mosaics from this region are mythological or religious scenes, but sometimes we see one like this, showing a touchingly human scene from upper class life.We cannot find a perfectly comparable example with this type of subject matter and size. To give you an idea of what is available, see for example this larger mosaic with mythological subject matter: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-roman-marble-mosaic-panel-circa-3rd-5321865-details.aspx that sold for $30000 in 2010; this pair of smaller panels with less sophisticated subject matter: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-late-roman-mosaic-panel-circa-4th-5th-2034792-details.aspx that sold in 2001 for roughly $6000, and this similar-sized but more colorful example: http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/Lot/a-late-roman-mosaic-panel-circa-4th-5th-5509263-details.aspx that sold for $25000 in 2011. I would ask the electors to reject these misrepresentations and to look at the other side of the shield. Not only has the Government carried out every pledge which it made at the General Election, but in its Budget of 1928 it has produced a bold and constructive scheme of rating reform which is a genuine attempt to bring back prosperity to those areas and to those industries', also adding 'Since the War the great basic industries, which employ the largest proportion of the working population and are responsible for no less than two-thirds of this country's export trade, have been going through especially difficult times, owing to severe foreign competition and heavy costs of production. The best solution of the problem lies in cheaper production, which must mean better trade, less unemployment, cheaper prices and better wages. It is in this direction that the Government has found it possible to come to the relief of industry', explaining that the scheme has been designed 'as to give the greatest help to those areas and to those industries which are most in need of it' and referring in particular to the coal, iron and steel industries ('upon which the prosperity of South Wales so largely depends') as well as agriculture which has also been helped by the introduction of a Credits Bill 'which will make it easier for people to purchase and equip farms and to obtain working capital with which to develop them'. Baldwin concludes his letter 'These are practical steps which cannot fail to help the industries concerned on the road to prosperity. Every step on that road means better conditions for the workers and more opportunities of employment, and it is because this reform which the Conservative Government has introduced really holds out hopes of better times for everybody connected with industry that I feel confident that it will receive the support of the electors'. A letter of interesting political content. A small pinhole appears to the upper left corner of each page and with a few extremely light, very minor spots of foxing, none of which significantly affect the text or signature. G (1) to VG, 3 Sir Courtenay Mansel (1880-1933) Welsh Landowner and Farmer, Barrister and Liberal Party Politician who later joined the Conservatives. Baldwin's letter is written at the time of the Carmarthen By-Election of 1928 at which Mansel was chosen by the Conservative Party as their candidate. In a tight contest the Liberal candidate William Nathaniel Jones won by the narrow majority of 47 votes over Labour's Daniel Hopkin. Mansel came bottom of the poll with just under 30% of the votes.

NINETEENTH-CENTURY IRISH MAHOGANY GRAND TOUR SPECIMEN MARBLE TABLE, BY MACK, WILLIAMS AND GIBTON the circular chequered marble inset top, raised on a turned stem and platform base, terminating on bun feet with sunken brass castors 72 cm. high; 64 cm. diameterAn aristocrat on the Grand Tour most likely acquired this fine example of a Pietra Dura (hard stone) marble top. It is inlaid with a selection of specimen Italian marbles in checkerboard form. The common practise upon return to Ireland was to commission a bespoke table to showcase the top. The quality of the supporting pedestal is consistent with the work of the outstanding Dublin firm Mack, Williams and Gibton (1810 – 1829), arguably Ireland’s finest ever cabinetmakers. The firm was responsible for furnishing country houses and important buildings including Dublin Castle and the Viceregal Lodge, now Áras an Uachtaráin, the official residence of the President of Ireland.  The Grand Tour was an essential part of the education of the Irish and British aristocracy. It was a cultural tour of Europe formally undertaken by young men especially in the eighteenth-century. It was hugely influential in terms of the accrual of the cultural capital of both kingdoms, a development that paved the way for Neo-classicism and with it gave birth to the rich Georgian legacy that is ours today.

WW2 RAF Royal Air Force Outstanding Bomber Command Triple Operation Tour DFC, DFM Pair of Medals.Awarded to Pilot Officer Bernard Cunningham Bull, an Air Gunner who flew his first operation on the night of the 24th February 1941 in a Wellington Bomber of 218 Squadron. Comprising: Distinguished Flying Cross (reverse engraved 1945). Mounted as single medal in case, Distinguished Flying Medal '905503 F/Sgt B.C. Bull RAF'. Mounted as a single medal as worn. The medals are accompanied by original Air Ministry Letter dated 6th July 1945 giving details of the award of the DFC and a WW2 medal forwarding address giving Mr B.C. Bull as living in Wimbledon. Near VGC.The announcement of the Distinguished Flying Cross appeared in the London Gazette on the 25th May 1945. The official recommendation states' P/O Bull has now completed his third tour of operations. He has participated six times in attacks on Cologne, six times on Bremen, five times against Kiel, and in many other raids on targets deep in Germany, including the capital itself. In his third tour he has also operated in support of the Army. He has flown with his squadron as a mid-under gunner, and his work has always been of the highest order, both in the air and on the ground. By his courage and coolness and his great experience of operational flying he has been an invaluable addition to the Squadron personnel and has greatly helped in the training of less experienced gunners. He is strongly recommended for the award of the Distinguished Flying Cross.' Dated 24th January 1945. The Station Commander of RAF Mildenhall wrote: 'Strongly recommended. The record of devotion to duty and sustained operational operational endeavour of this Officer is exceptional. The splendid example he has set has been outstanding.'The announcement of the Distinguished Flying Medal appeared in the London Gazette on the 29th December 1942. The recommendation states. '16th October 1942. Flight Sergeant Bull is an Air Gunner of No.218(Gold Coast) Squadron who, between February 1941 and August 1942, completed 56 operational sorties with a total of 317 operational hours. His record is one of sustained courage and distinction. In April 1941, he was in the front turret of a Wellington aircraft which attacked the aerodrome of Marane, south of Bordeaux. The aircraft made a diving attack on two hangars which were already on fire. Flight Sergeant Bull sprayed the bullets from his two Brownings around the hangars and put out a searchlight. Three attacks were made, the last one at 500 feet, and Flight Sergeant Bull pumped several hundred rounds into four dispersed aircraft. In May 1941, Flight Sergeant Bull's aircraft was attacked off Cuxhaven by a Me109. He directed his Captain to turn so that the enemy machine was silhouetted against the Northern Lights. He then gave the German machine a short burst of fire and it disappeared rapidly. In July 1942, after bombing Bremen, Flight Sergeant Bull's aircraft was attacked near the Zuider Zee, first by a Me.110 and soon afterwards by two other unidentified aircraft, at least one of which was claimed to have been shot down, On 16th July 1942, on the way out of Lubeck, three Me109's attacked his Stirling in daylight over the Danish coast. After three sharp bursts from Flight Sergeant Bull, one of the enemy aircraft broke away emitting a long trail of dark blue smoke. The British machine went on and bombed its target. Throughout his stay with this squadron, Flight Sergeant Bull has distinguished himself by his eagerness and his very complete subservience of personal interest to duty. He is very strongly recommended for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal. Pilot Officer Bernard Cunningham's operational career started with 218 Squadron on the evening of the 24th February 1941 with ops to Breast, a trip of 5 hours 35 minutes. Through out his operation Tour he flew regularly until his 34th op on the 23rd July 1942, when he was screened. The squadron now operating the Short Sterling Bomber. He appears to have started his second tour again with 218 Squadron on the 6th May 1942 and would go on to complete a second tour of 22 trips when he was once again screened and posted to a training establishment. He was posted to 15 Squadron operating the Avro Lancaster Bomber in October 1944 and flew the 1st trip of his third tour on the 19th October 1944 to Stuttgart. During this time the squadron was incredibly busy and in the period from the 19th October to 30th November he flew 16 trips. This completed his operational flying of WW2 his 72 Operational flight covering 396 hours in the air. He was born in March 1917 and died in 1971, at that time living at Sutton Surrey. Seán Keating PRHA HRA HRSA (1889-1977) REST AFTER TOIL, 1924 oil on canvas signed lower left; signed again in Irish [Céitínn] on reverse 22 x 27in. (55.88 x 68.58cm) Christie's, London, The Irish Sale 14 May 2004, lot 188 as 'Man Standing by a Column'; Private collection; Whyte's, 22 February 2005, lot 45 as 'Man Leaning on a Capital'; Private collection Royal Hibernian Academy, Annual Exhibition, 1924, No. 185 Seán Keating is recognised for his use of allegory; this painting, known as 'Man Leaning on a Pillar' is an excellent example. The man in question stands in a landscape that features what looks like a Spanish building, but is, in fact, a farm building in the Dublin Mountains. Keating featured the same building in another painting - a self-portrait entitled 'Salud' - exhibited in the RHA in 1924, and sold at Whyte's, 30 May 1916 as lot 30. Prominent on the gable end of the building is a feature known as a bell cote, and in times past the bell was used to call farm labourers to work. Although the bell is no longer in place, it is the symbolism that is important to the artist's intended meaning. The unidentified man, hat tilted to protect his gaze from the evening sun, and sleeves rolled up, appears to be the person in charge of whatever work has taken place. He is well dressed, with a blue striped tie hanging loosely around his neck. He seems relaxed, happy even, with the days' work, as he leans on a very unusual decorative pillar. While a feature of the painting, such a pillar would not ordinarily be found in a farmstead in the Dublin Mountains. It is part of a Corinthian column, and its presence in the composition gives further allegorical significance to the peaceful scene. In consideration of the theme of work evident in the painting, Keating's use of the column brings to mind The Book of Corinthians, which is replete with references to the spiritual value of labour and, importantly, to the significance of common purpose such as that suggested by the bell cote: 'Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters … that all of you be in agreement, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose.' 1 Corinthians 1:10 When Keating exhibited the aforementioned 'Salud' in 1924, he also showed a painting entitled 'Rest after Toil'. The artist's original titles are often lost, but it seems clear given the allegorical meaning associated with the bell cote and the Corinthian column, and the man's contented demeanour, that this painting is 'Rest after Toil.' Featuring the same farm building, the two paintings would have had strong meaning for the viewing audience in 1924. In post-Treaty Ireland Keating used allegory to remind, and to implore his viewing audience to work hard, and to work together. It is a message that is equally relevant in the twenty first century. Ancient Egypt, Third Intermediate Period, ca. 1070 to 712 BCE. A cast bronze ibis, posed as if standing in the shallow waters on the shores of the Nile, with its large feet drawn beneath its ovoid body, its neck curved upward and its long, curving beak pointing downward. Small inset areas show where its eyes were and the feet have detailed joints. The bronze patina on this piece is particularly colorful boasting vivid turquoise and blue hues. Size: 3.6" L x 1.05" W x 2.4" H (9.1 cm x 2.7 cm x 6.1 cm)Larger ibises shaped just like this one but with bronze heads and legs attached to hollow wooden bodies were used by the Egyptians to hold the mummified remains of ibises. The ibis, an elegant, long-legged wading bird that lives along the shores of the Nile, was associated with the god Thoth. He was the god of wisdom and writing, and in worship to him many thousands of ibises were ritually sacrificed, embalmed, and mummified before being buried in underground galleries. Thousands of these burials have been excavated at Sakkara, near Memphis, Egypt's ancient capital. This piece, a miniature bronze model of these ibis containers, may have served as a votive item, to be placed inside a tomb, or perhaps one bought by a pilgrim visiting Sakkara. Provenance: Ex-Henry & Gretchen Burnett Collection, Santa Barbara, CA, acquired before 1970 Condition: Dark turquoise and blue patina overall. Smoothing due to age but form is still quite vivid. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
