Mercia, Coenwulf, Penny, 1.28g, tribrach phase, 797-805, London, Diola, uncial m, contraction bar above within inner circle, +coenvvl.f r.e.x, rev. diola, within angles of a tribach formed of two lines, each arm containing a row of pellets, pellet in di and ol angles of tribrach (Naismith L9 var. this reverse with moneyer's name divideddi/ol/a unlisted; N.342; S.914), deliberately bent into a rectangular shape with four almost equal edges facing towards the obverse, the host coin nearly extremely fine provenanceFound Upton upon Severn near Worcester, Worcestershire, February 2013Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, EMC 2014.0233The appearance and findspot of this coin has a significance which is yet to be fully understood. Upton upon Severn was part of the original endowment given by Coenwulf to Winchcombe Abbey. Winchcombe (16 miles from Upton) was, at this time, the capital of the Kingdom of Mercia. The Abbey was founded by Coenwulf and its charter was subscribed on 11th November 811 by Cuthred, King of Kent, Sired, King of the East Saxons, Wulfred, Archbishop of Canterbury, and a total of twelve bishops and eleven dukes. Upon Coenwulf's death in 821 he was interred within the Abbey which was also the final resting place of his son, Cynehelm, later venerated as Saint Kenelm. The practice of coin bending is most usually associated with the 13th-15th centuries. There is much evidence to support the notion that these pieces have an explicitly religious nature and were largely used as votive offerings. One other 9th century parallel is known, an imitative solidus of Louis the Pious, found in Wiltshire, cf P.A.S. (WILT-A50F43). The current specimen, deliberately folded on all four sides and discovered on land belonging to Coenwulf's own religious house could feasibly have a direct association with the endowment of the land to Winchcombe Abbey or possibly the foundation of the Abbey itself. More research needs to be undertaken but seldom can an artefact of such age have such a direct association with the King whose name it bears.Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. Amerique . Charming miniature map of the Americas. California is shown as an island and the D. d`Anien separates California from a huge Terre de Iesso, with a D. de Vriez separating Iesso from an unnamed Asia. The Spanish colony of St. Fe is identified, Quebec is shown as the capital of the French possessions and St. Augustine is shown in Florida. N. Suede is incorrectly shown, as the Dutch took possession of that colony in 1655. In the Pacific, the recently discovered coastline of New Zealand is depicted as a remnant of the old southern continent. This is the third state, with a modified title cartouche. Pierre Duval was Nicolas Sanson`s nephew and pupil. He published a wide range of atlases and individual maps including a fine miniature world geography with many of the maps based on Sanson.See also lot 775 for Philip Burden`s excellent reference work on the mapping of North America, which discusses this map. [Lot of 2] Plan of Cape Breton [and] A Map of Royal or Cape Breton I. from the Best Authorities . A. Plan of Cape Breton, by Anonymous, from Gentleman`s & London Magazine, published 1745 (6.5 x 4.0""). This map of the island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia was published in August 1745, just a couple months after the Siege of Louisbourg during the War of Austrian Succession (or King George`s War). The Louisbourg Harbor appears in plan form, with excellent detail of the capital`s fortifications and a number of ships filling the waters. Outside Louisbourg there is little detail on the rest of the island, with the exception of scattered settlements depicted as rows of buildings. Some surrounding islands are shown, and for some reason, Newfoundland is nearly touching Cape Breton. A note at the bottom reads, ""Shoals of Acadie according to Poppel`s map."" There are 17 numbered sites with a key on an opposing page (not included here). Condition: There are three tiny binding holes in the bottom blank margin. B. A Map of Royal or Cape Breton I. from the Best Authorities, by Thomas Kitchin, from London Magazine, published 1747 (4.2 x 6.5""). This map details the entire island with many names along the coast. The lower portion of the map is filled with a trading post scene, complete with a boat, fishermen, and trader. The tiny St. Paul Island appears as well. The title is contained in a unique British flag cartouche. Kitchin began his career in 1745, making this an early example of his work. Condition: A dark impression.See also lot 773 for Kenneth Kershaw`s excellent reference work on the mapping of Canada, which discusses both of these maps. See description . La Terra de Hochelaga nella Nova Francia . This is the first published plan of a settlement in North America, and the first plan of the site of Montreal showing the Indian settlement, Hochelaga, visited by Jacques Cartier in 1535-36. Cartier was a French explorer and is credited with being the first European to map the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River. During Cartier`s first trip to the new world in 1534, he explored Newfoundland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence in an attempt to discover a western passage to Asia. On his second voyage in 1535-36, Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River reaching the Iroquoian capital of Stadacona, which later became Quebec City, and then continued further upriver to Hochelaga, arriving on October 2, 1535. Cartier described the Indian village as being near Mont Real, a great and fertile mountain surrounded by many types of trees, including Oaks, Elms, Walnut, Cedars, Firs, and Willows. The name Monte Real appears to the left of the village, and is the first appearance of the name on a map.The village is laid out in a circular form and protected by wooden barriers. The house-like structures in the village are arranged in a geometrical pattern, with a fire depicted in the middle of each structure. Cartier and his crew are pictured in the foreground being greeted by their Indian hosts. Various types of trees are depicted, as well as several animals and what appears to be a corn field at top left. This map was first published in Giovanni Battista Ramusio`s Navigationi et Viaggi in 1556. The first woodblock was destroyed by fire in 1557, and this plan is the second edition from a new block with a ""weeping willow"" type tree in the upper right and the page number 447 above the neatline at right.See also lot 773 for Kenneth Kershaw`s excellent reference work on the mapping of Canada, which discusses this map. An excellent impression on watermarked paper with faint toning along centerfold and minor scattered foxing. 14.5"" W x 10.6"" H . Gastaldi/Ramusio, 1565

Map of the United States . This early wall map of the United States extends to the Pacific. The Southwest and Texas are controlled by the United Mexican States which the map labels as the Internal Provinces of Mexico. Oregon is north of Mexico and runs east to the Continental Divide. The huge Missouri Territory stretches from Canada to Arkansas Territory. Arkansas, itself created from a portion of Missouri Territory, is in an early configuration with its western boundary to Texas` panhandle and locates Ft. Smith, Little Rock, Arkopolis, and Dwight. Chicago is shown south of its correct location. North West Territory reaches to Missouri Territory. A terrific distance table gives the mileage from Washington D.C. to each state`s capital or largest city. Below the map is a fine elevation view of the ""Capitol at Washington"" with inset maps on either side: North America; City of New-York and Vicinity; District of Columbia; Boston and its` Vicinity; and the Caribbean with Cuba, Jamaica and St. Domingo. The title cartouche features a painstakingly detailed stipple engraving of George Washington. This is the first state of the second edition with Thrall`s imprint replacing that of Huntington & Willard. Published in Hartford, Connecticut. A beautiful example of a scarce, early American-produced wall map. Professionally restored including mounting on new linen with fresh piping thread at sides. Attached to original wooden rods. Within the map are numerous small cracks and an occasional small chip which is now well supported on the new linen. The top margin has been replaced with old paper and there is some foxing near the bottom roller at right. 28"" W x 21"" H . Thrall, Willis . 1828

Territories of New Mexico and Utah . A very interesting map that depicts the region with the largest extents of Utah and New Mexico territories. Utah Territory encompasses all of today`s Nevada and extends east to the Continental Divide into present-day northern Colorado with Fillmore City as its capital. Kanzas is to the east of Utah Territory. New Mexico Territory stretches between California and Texas and includes part of present-day southern Colorado and the southern tip of Nevada. Fremont`s routes, proposed routes for the Pacific Railroad, the Spanish Trail, and much more are located. This is the fourth state of the map, with the plate number 53 in the lower right corner, with the plain border of the General Atlas. Text related to California on the verso. Very light, even age toning. 14.6"" W x 11.7"" H . Colton, Joseph Hutchins . 1855

An advertising slogan within a Victorian-style border under the panhandle reads ""High Grade First Mortgage Real Estate Loans."" Oddly, some of the counties are listed only with numbers. For example county ""Twenty Four"" is McCurtain as it was in 1907. Details include railroads, towns, Indian reservations and roads. The state capital is located in Guthrie. An uncommon advertising broadside map. Pleasant even-age toning and two short edge tears confined to the blank margins and closed on verso with archival tape. 11"" W x 6"" H . . 1907

Map of the United States and Texas, Designed to Accompany Smith`s Geography for Schools . This great school atlas map with early territorial borders in the West features the Independent Republic of Texas with Austin shown as the capital by a large star. Oregon Territory covers the northwest and extends well into Canada. The huge Indian Territory lies north of Texas and extends to the Missouri Territory, which in turn goes to the border with Canada. Iowa Territory is in a rare configuration, stretching from Missouri to the Canadian border and bounded east and west by the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. The population is annotated for the states and Texas. The large inset at lower left is a detailed ""Map of Mexico and Guatimala"" and shows the Republic of Texas. Drawn and engraved by Stiles, Sherman & Smith. A dark impression with original color, a few minor spots in the image, and a centerfold separation at bottom that just passes the neatline. 17.5"" W x 10.4"" H . Burgess, Daniel . 1839

La Martinique une des Antilles Francoises de l`Amerique Dressee sur les Nouvelles Observations . This striking chart of Martinique divides the island into two sections: Cabes Terre and Basse Terre. There is excellent detail of the mountainous terrain inland, but most of the information is concentrated along the coasts, where various capes, forts, cul-de-sacs, rivers, anchorages, and shoals are located. The capital, Fort-de-France (Le Fort Royal), is prominently displayed. A note in the top left corner addresses the history of the island, and a view at bottom left shows the island as it appears from the vantage of the ocean. Four compass roses topped with fleurs-de-lis and radiating rhumb lines surround the island on all sides. Original outline color on a watermarked sheet with light soiling, faint offsetting, and a pair of small worm holes near the centerfold at bottom. 24.9"" W x 19.6"" H . Le Rouge, George Louis . 1753

Seat of War -- Russia and Turkey . This uncommon woodcut map illustrates the theater of the Crimean War and its surroundings. It stretches from the Adriatic and Ionian seas in the west to the Black Sea and the Euphrates in the east. Many cities are named, especially to the west and south of the Black Sea, where much of the fighting was concentrated. Important battle locations that appear include Oltenita, where the war`s first official battle took place; Sinope, where the Russians took down an Ottoman fleet early in the war; and Sevastapol, then the capital of Crimea and later in the war the site of one of the most harrowing sieges in history. Neutral Territory is noted around the Danube Delta. Published for The Express Messenger, likely when the war was just beginning. Issued folding with light toning, moderate offsetting, and an extraneous crease at left. 29.1"" W x 21.3"" H . . 1854

Quale e di Quanta Importanza, e Bellezza sia la Nobile Cita di Napole in Italia Ancora che sia Nota a Tutto il Mondo… . This stunning bird`s-eye view of Naples gives the burgeoning port city a three-dimensional perspective. Individual buildings, the layout of the streets, and the surrounding countryside are depicted in great detail. One of the most prominent features of this view is the fortified wall protecting the city, which was the greatest urban construction in Naples until the 19th century. The wall begins in the northwest at the Castel San Martino (#11, now known as Castel Sant`Elmo), a star-shaped structure near the top center of the image that was given its shape by a military architect, Pedro Luis Escriva from Valencia, from 1537-47. The wall continues east through several gates until it reaches the northernmost point at San Giovanni a Carbonara (#28), a Gothic church that was founded by the Augustinians in 1343. At bottom center is Castel Nuovo (#10), a 13th century castle that is today one of the main architectural landmarks in Naples. Continuing south is the island of Megaride, on which the Castel dell`Ovo (#12) was built, which received its name, Egg Castle, from the Roman poet Virgil. Legend has it that Virgil, believed to be a great sorcerer, placed a magical egg in the foundation of the castle, and had the egg broken, the castle would have been destroyed and disastrous events would have occurred throughout Naples. Between the Castel dll`Ovo and the Castel Nuovo, the via Toledo (#67) stretches from the water north to the wall of the city, linking the old town to the ""new"" city.Today Naples is the capital of the Campania region and the third largest municipality in Italy. Its history began in the second millennium BC with Greek settlements and grew rapidly due to the influence of Syracuse, a Greek city-state. The Romans captured the city during the Samnite Wars (circa 300 BC) as the Roman Republic fought for unification and control of Italy. Although the walls surrounding the city repeatedly protected the city from the Carthaginian Empire, the city exchanged hands between the Ostrogoths, the Byzantine Empire, and the Normans in the first millennium AD. Control over the city continued to change over the centuries, and because of its size and importance, the city became a cultural center, particularly during the Renaissance. In the 16th century, Pedro Alvarez de Toledo, a Spanish Viceroy of Naples, initiated numerous social, economic and urban changes in Naples. His efforts to rebuild the city enabled Naples to become the second largest city in Europe by 1550, surpassed only by Paris. This view serves as a document of urban development following the initiatives promoted by Pedro Alvarez de Toledo.Antoine du Perac Lefrery of Besancon was born in France in 1512, and Italianized his name to Antonio Lafreri upon settling in Rome in 1540. In 1544 he established a business as an engraver and print seller, and began collaborating with Antonio Salamanca, an existing dealer, in 1553. After Salamanca`s death, Lafreri continued to work on his own, and became the leading dealer in engravings in Rome until his death in 1577. Lafreri`s focus was as a dealer and publisher, rather than as an artisan, and is credited with being one of the first to issue collections of maps in atlas form, assembled to order per a customer`s specific requests. This view of Naples was engraved by Etienne Duperac, whose imprint appears at bottom right (""SP"" - short for Stefano Duperac, his Italianized name). Duperac (c. 1525-1604) was also a Frenchman who emigrated to Italy around 1550, and worked as an architect, painter, engraver, and garden designer. In 1565 he entered into a contract with Lafreri, who published the majority of Duperac`s work through the next few years. Duperac is most famous for his views of Rome and his engravings of Roman monuments and antiquities. This handsome view of Naples became the standard view for Naples, and was copied by numerous cartographers. Printed on two sheets, joined. Issued folding, now pressed, on watermarked paper with several fold separations that have been professionally repaired, and very light soiling and toning along centerfold at top. A chip at top left, extending 1/4"" into the image, has been professionally repaired with the image expertly replaced in facsimile. There are also expert and nearly invisible repairs to a small worm hole to the right of the centerfold (just below the western wall of the city) and to a 7"" tear that extends from just below the Castel San Martino to the centerfold. The margins have been extended at left, right, and bottom to accommodate framing. 33.1"" W x 21.9"" H . Lafreri, Antonio . 1566

[Book of Hours Leaf] . Superb vellum leaf from this important transitional period when books began to be printed from movable type, decorated with metal-cut illustrations and combined with hand-painted illuminated initials. It is printed on vellum in black and red with many initials hand painted in red, blue and gold. The text on both recto and verso has an ornamental border depicting mythical animals, a hunting scene, a man and a woman harvesting apples using a stick, among others. The text on the recto is from the psalms; beginning with the large capital ""L"" on the recto is Psalm 150: Laudate dominum in sanctis eius laudate eum in firmamento virtutis eius (Praise the Lord. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens).Thielman Kerver was a printer in Paris, who worked ""in vico sancti Iacobi ad signum Vnicornis & ibidem venales habent"" (in Saint Jacob`s lane under the sign of the Unicorn where they are also for sale). He began printing Books of Hours in 1497 and continued until his death in 1522. His widow, Iolande Bonhomme, took over the firm, and continued to produce liturgical books until 1556. This is the complete volume of illustrations accompanying the reports submitted for the 1st session of the 34th Congress. The 35 illustrations are primarily from the General Land Office (16) and Bureau of Topographical Engineers (13), but also include a few from the Quartermaster General and Secretary of the Navy. Of particular interest in this volume are: Map of a Part of the Territory of Washington to Accompany Report of Surveyor General (19.3 x 14.3""). This uncommon map was executed by James Tilton, Surveyor General, from the Olympia office. This is the first GLO map of Washington Territory, issued just 28 months after its creation. The map shows limited survey progress with modest detail west of the Cascades. In the east, only major rivers are shown. Several forts (Steilacom, Nisqually, Walla Walla, & Townsend) are located and Seattle is labeled Statle. Legend at upper right identifies surveyed lines, surveys under progress, townships subdivided, and proposed surveying for the 1856 & 57 season. Map Showing the Different Routes Travelled over by the Detachments of the Overland Command in the Spring of 1855 from Salt Lake City, Utah to the Bay of San Francisco (18.5 x 22""). This uncommon map accompanied the ""Report of Capt. R. Ingalls on the march of L. Col. Steptoe from Ft. Leavenworth to California"" in 1854 and 1855. Wheat states ""it is a document of first quality.. showing three important routes."" Steptoe was looking for a new and shorter route from the Great Salt Lake to the Pacific Coast. In addition to the route chosen by Steptoe, the routes of two detachments are also traced - one under Capt. Ingalls, the other by Lt. Mowry. The map extends to include all of California and part of Oregon to above the Rogue River. It stretches eastward to name G.S. Lake City, the Mormon capital of Fillmore, Cedar City and Fort Yuma on the Colorado. References: Wheat (TMW) #868; Wagner & Camp #256. Map of Public Surveys in California... (36 x 30""). This large and remarkably detailed map delineates the progress of public surveys throughout the state on a scale of 18 miles per inch. About one-third of the state, in the north and east, remains unsurveyed. Lake Tahoe is shown fairly accurately, but is still called Bigler Lake. Printed on two sheets, joined as issued. Hardbound in original embossed cloth boards with gilt titles on front cover and spine. Overall the maps are in good to very good condition in a few cases with light toning and occasional damp staining mainly along the folds. The map of California has an 8"" binding tear and one tiny area of loss at a fold intersection. The map of Florida has a 12"" binding tear. Title page is toned and damp stained. Covers are stained and rubbed. 8.8"" W x 11.9"" H . U.S. Government, 1856
