Equivalent Company, a dividend warrant for the 228th dividend being ½ per cent on £2000 of capital stock, 6th July 1819, payable at the Bank of England, issued to and signed by William Kops Coussmaker, small format, black, printed in London, single punch hole top left, ink cancel at top, very fine and the only type of paper seen of this important company. The Equivalent Company was the parent and founder of the Royal Bank of Scotland. It was formed by Act of Parliament in 1724 to incorporate the holders of ´Equivalent Debentures´, these being 5% bonds of uncertain redemption date issued to unlucky creditors of the Scottish national debt (soldiers, tradesmen etc) for whom there was insufficient cash in the ´Equivalent Fund´ created by England under the 1707 Act of Union. The Fund was granted to Scotland by the English Parliament and was intended to be ´equivalent´ to the additional duties the Scots were expected to pay as a result of the Union. The company´s authorised capital was the exact amount of the debentures - £248,550.0s.9½d. In 1727 the company obtained a Scottish charter to create a bank for banking in Scotland only (thus evading the Bank of England´s monopoly) with an initial capital of £111,000. This was the Royal Bank of Scotland. After this the Equivalent Company continued in existence in London, paying regular dividends, we assume with those shareholders who had chosen not to convert their shares into the Royal Bank. In 1835 the company distributed its Equivalent Stock to its shareholders. Subject to 20% VAT on Buyer’s Premium. For more information please view Terms and Conditions for Buyers.

India – Fine Miniature portrait of Tipu Sultan of Mysore 1840. A finely executed watercolour of the great Tipu Sultan circa 1840-1850 oval mount^ 9.5cm by 7 cm^ framed. Tipu Sultan was a farsighted person who could foresee East India Company’s design to get entrenched in India. He therefore negotiated with the French for help and also sought assistance from the Amir of Afghanistan and the Sultan of Turkey. The British were scared of Tipu’s growing strength and after their defeat in 1783 they formed an alliance with the Nizam of Hyderabad and Marhattas. As long as the British fought alone Tipu always defeated them. But he could not overcome their diplomacy conspiracy and intrigue. Thus he was defeated in his capital Seringapatam and was forced to sign a humiliating treaty on March 22 1792. As a result he had to concede half of his kingdom and pay an indemnity of 33 million rupees to the British and their allies. The alliance between the adversaries was soon broken and in 1795 the British after defeating the Nizam once again turned their attention towards Mysore. After the treaty at Seringapatam Tipu Sultan did not waste his time and made extensive preparations against the British. He had rebuilt his war machine in the shortest possible time with the help of the French. The British regarded it as a violation of the treaty and led to the start of the fourth Anglo-Mysore war in 1798 with the help of the Nizam. The French were unable to provide the needed support to Tipu Sultan. Tipu Sultan retreated to his capital and continued fighting till he breathed his last in May 1799. Tipu Sultan is buried at a mausoleum that he himself had built. An important piece of Indian History.

An appendix also lists the current cab fares for journeys throughout London – with an introduction to this third edition pointing out that the new edition was necessary because of an increase in omnibus fares (no doubt because of the Exhibition). [Lot of 4] Map of the City of Washington Showing the Varieties of Street Pavements... [and] ... Location of Deaths for the Year... [and] ... Showing the Location of Fatal Cases of Zymotic Diseases... [and] ... Location of Fatal Cases of Lung Diseases... These four thematic maps were published in the Annual Report of the Commissioners of the District of Columbia. Beginning in the early 1870`s, population growth exploded and the city lacked the basic infrastructure to support it. In 1874, Congress created a three-person Board of Commissioners to become the permanent government for the District. Over the next several decades, much was done by the Commission to improve living conditions and infrastructure including new sewer lines, paved roads and street cars. These maps reflect the progress of those efforts. Each map carries the title ""Map of the City of Washington..."" and is drawn on an identical scale, showing the street pattern of Washington in great detail. Each has a specialized focus and legend, with the titles continuing: A. ...Showing the Varieties of Street Pavements on January 1st 1887 B. ... Location of Deaths for the Year Ending June 30, 1886... C. ...Showing the Location of Fatal Cases of Zymotic Diseases for the Year Ending June 30, 1886 D. ...Showing the Location of Fatal Cases of Lung Diseases for the Year Ending June 30, 1886 An important set of four maps that provide a remarkable look into the capital city in the late 1880`s. [Lot of 8] Plat of the Common Field and Town Tract of Kaskaskia [and] Plat of the Claims Within the Tract Called the Grand Prairie [and] [6 Untitled Maps] This fascinating lot depicts land ownership along the banks of the Mississippi River. The tracts of land in these examples were drawn in the manner of French surveys, with long perpendicular lines to the Mississippi River (presumably allowing river access to the greatest number). Of particular interest is the Plat of the Common Field and Town Tract of Kaskaskia. In the early 18th century, Kaskasia was the French capital of Upper Louisiana due to its proximity to lead mines and its importance as a trading post. It later served as the capital of Illinois Territory and as state capital for one year (1809-1819). A large flood in 1881 caused the Mississippi River to change course, isolating Kaskaskia from the rest of Illinois and situating it as an enclave in Missouri. These maps were originally produced circa 1809 by William and Elias Rector for the General Land Office and later issued for the American State Papers (ca. 1834). The maps include: A. Plat of the Common Field and Town Tract of Kaskaskia (14.0 x 17.8"").B. Plat of the Claims Within the Tract Called the Grand Prairie (7.9 x 13.5"").C. [Untitled - Prairie du Rocher] (14.9 x 9.8"").D. [Untitled - Kaskaskia and Mississippi Rivers] (8.6 x 13.9""). E. [Untitled - Prairie du Pont] (9.5 x 14.7"").F. [Untitled - Cahokia] (17.0 x 14.4"").G. [Untitled - Fort Chartres] (15.4 x 16.5"").H. [Untitled - St. Philips] (14.0 x 9.6""). Issued on sturdy paper with light toning, scattered foxing, and occasional light to moderate offsetting. See description U.S. Government, 1809-34
