Lot 243

The East India Company: Robert Scott, Fairlie and Company, Agency Houses and papers of the Scott tin Deed Box, 29 x 41 x 30cm, containing a large quantity of correspondence, the majority sent to Robert Scott (1777-1844) and his Agency Firm, Robert Scott, Fairlie and Company, dating from the late eighteenth to mid-nineteenth centuries, discussing East India Company trade, dealings involving colonial plantations, and family matters in both India and BritainFootnote: Provenance: Robert Scott, 1777-1884; his daughter Isabella Mary Anne Quekett (née Scott), 1816-1872 and her husband, John Thomas Quekett, d.1861, founder of the Quekett Microscopical Society in London; and thence by descent Note: This collection comprises the Deed Box and papers predominantly sent to Robert Scott, 1777-1884, and his company, Robert Scott, Fairlie and Company. The company acted as a Scottish Agency House, a middleman between the East India Company, local people in India and other areas of the British Empire and Western owners of plantations in these places. In his work, The Scottish Connection with India 1725-1833, George McGilvary rather succinctly describes the role of such organisations: Without Scottish Houses of Agency (such as Scott & Co., Fairlie Fergusson & Co., Alexander & Co., Colvin Bazett & Co.) acting as middle-men and purveyors of capital for indigo plantations and production in Bengal, for salt farms and saltpetre, and most of all for opium and cotton, the EIC would not have fulfilled its primary commercial function or been able to remit moneys to London. A quantity of the documents contained in the deed box refer to this company. For example, a letter dated 10th April 1836 from another such company states: “We have of course no means of forming any opinion as to the present value of the Belvedere Plantation but have always considered it would be extremely advisable of the parties invested to dispose of the whole of their property in the Island should an eligible opportunity occur…” Whilst more exact details of the contemporary costs of estates, spices and land can be gleaned from other documents, providing a valuable insight into colonial trade in the early 19th century: Statement of the Claim of the State of the late Capt. Francis Salmond on that of the Late M. William Baskett. Feb. 1824 The Purchase Money of the Spice Plantation at Bencoolen? Called Fir Grove MsRs 5000… Add Live Stock on Plantation valued at 300…” However, the contents of the deed box also provides fascinating insights into the life of a British family who were heavily involved in the East India Company. Robert Scott's uncle, David Scott (1746-1805) and moved to India in 1763 as a teenager, making his fortune through his company, Scott, Tate and Adamson. Being the younger son of Robert Scott of Dunninald, he decided to purchase the estate from his older brother, Archibald in 1786, forming friendships with figures such as Henry Dundas, at the time Head of the India Board of Control, and William Pitt. These connections proved beneficial for David Scott's two nephews, Robert (1777-1844) and David (1786-1831). Robert Scott would follow his uncle's lead to become a writer with the East India Company and owner of Scott, Fairlie and Company, whilst David Scott would head out to India in 1801, becoming a judge and magistrate and the agent responsible for the North East Frontier and revenues from the Assam Valley by 1824. One of the most touching stories told in the family letters involves the three young children of David Scott the younger, his 'natural' children born outside of wedlock. In August 1831, letters sent to Robert Scott in England reveal the untimely death of his younger brother. Many of these letters appear to be sent by Lieutenant General Archibald Watson, David and Robert Scott's brother-in-law, as he married their sister Ann in 1821. Watson edited Memoir of the Late David Scott, published in Calcutta in 1832. Letters sent by Watson and other colleagues of David Scott reveal - apparently to the surprise of Robert Scott - that David was father to three young children, all of mixed British-Indian heritage: a six year old girl, and a younger boy and girl between the ages of two-and-a-half and three-and-a-half. Sent on the 19th October from Gowlpara, signed 'Rutherford', one letter reads: My Dear Sir, I have made enquiries with reference to your note of the 7th… And it appears that the [?] of the eldest child of poor Mr Scott now at Goahulty is about 6 yrs – it is a Girl – there are two others nearly about the [?] age 3 – The mother of two of them is said to be a native of this place, now I’ve not [?] doubt in that case that she would live here readily if any security for a provision was given, the other is I believe a native of [?] in Apaur, if she would have an objection to residing at this station, [?] it would decidedly be the best place… Several letters discuss the care and financial situation of these children, although less so their mothers. by Christmas 1831, the children appear to be living under the care of Archibald Watson himself. An earlier letter from General Archibald Watson to Robert Scott, discussing life in India, also offers a valuable insight into British colonial attitudes and opinions at the time. In one such letter, he writes about the Indian mutiny at Barrackpore in 1824, and his personal opinions about the future of the British Empire in India: A very serious business has just happened at Barrackpore - a Regiment of Infantry mutinied and refused to march to join the troops in the Burmese Country - in Consequence of which 2 Regiments of Europeans were ordered from Calcutta with their guns; paraded in front of the mutineers; who, on refusing either to march or lay down their guns, were ultimately blown to pieces... The Effects of this severe Example I fear will be rather sinister throughout the Country... ...I do not think we shall ever lose our Eastern Empire - but I do not in the least doubt that it will fall to pieces... Further family letters naturally discuss rather mundane matters, however scattered amongst these are testaments of love, details of estranged spouses (it would seem that Archibald Watson and his wife, Ann (née Scott), were separated following a suspected affair), and descriptions of voyages and journeys to India. Watson sent his children to be educated in Scotland under the supervision his wife Ann with whom he did not have children nor did she ever travel to India. Interestingly the papers include letters relating to the position of "natural" children in Scotland. Watson’s son Sydney Grandison emigrated to New South Wales in 1836 after finishing his education. Watson died in London, leaving his entire estate to his daughter Louisa. Further papers relating to the Scott family in India can be found in the India Office Records, whilst the lot also contains handwritten 'Extracts from the Letters' and 'David Scott: Some Pages from the Life of an Indian Civil Servant 1800-1831' compiled by Mrs A.E. Quekett in the 1920s.

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "American Cats" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This is the original painting which was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for a Se-tenant Block of four U.S. 22c American Cat stamps issued February 5, 1988. Domestic cats have been a part of civilization for nearly five thousand years. In the days of Ancient Egypt, as slaves toiled about the pyramids, cats held a place of honor. The Greeks used cats to combat rodents and began to steal them from the Egyptians, and it soon became a capital crime to steal a cat. As Romans overran the Kingdom of Egypt, the cats of a dying civilization became the spoils of war. By ships, by land, carried by wagon or cart, the cat made its way into the heart of nearly every civilization on earth. In America, cats made their appearance in the 1700's, wending their way into the hearts and homes of our founding fathers. Today, cats are among America's favorite pets and are lavished with affection in many an American home. Image Size: in. Overall Size: in. Unframed. (B11366)

Lot 345

Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Mockingbird" Signed middle right. Original Watercolor painting on Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover for the limited edition collection of The Songbirds of the Fifty States. Each cover was postmarked on the anniversary of statehood in the appropriate state capital. Deep in the South, the songs of the Mockingbird can be heard filling the air of a summer's evening with joyous sounds and lilting notes. This lovely bird was once named by the Indians "four hundred tongues" because of its ability to mimic so many different tones. And yet, researchers have determined that perhaps the most wonderful of all is the Mockingbird's own song. Not shy, Mockingbirds revel in singing their distinctive theme over and over again. Tiring of that, they may turn to the songs of some thirty-nine other birds, or produce one of fifty or more bird calls, or even imitate a nearby frog or cricket sound. In fact, Mockingirds have been known to recreate such sounds as squeaky gate hinges, dogs barking, or the whistle of a happy human passing below them. However, the cheerfulness of the Mockingbird generally ends with his song, as unfortunate pets, people and even other Mockingbirds will attest. For, the Mockingbird is a highly territorial creature, and will fight fiercely to repel trespassers. Image Size: 8.5 x 8.75 in. Overall Size: 18 x 18 in. Unframed. (B06769)

Lot 470

Donald Moss (American, 1920 - 2010) "The White House" Signed lower right. Original Oil painting on Cold Press Illustration Board. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. In 1791, a prestigious competition was held to design the President's residence in the new capital city of Washington. Many prominent architects, including Thomas Jefferson, submitted their ideas. The honor, and an award of $500, went to Irish-American James Hoban, whose sketch was approved by George Washington. Completed in 1800, the Palladian style Georgian mansion was first referredto as the President's House, then as the Executive Mansion. However, it soon became known as the "White House" because of its white-grey sandstone exterior. During the War of 1812, British troops burned the building, with only the charred exterior walls remaining. Under direction of Hoban, the structure was rebuilt and enlarged. Today the White House is the oldest federal building in the capital. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., the White House remains the official residence of the President of the United States and his family. The home of every President except George Washington, who died before construction was completed, the 132-room mansion stands in the center of 18 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. Under guidance of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, the White House Historical Association was founded in 1961. Three years later, President Lyndon B. Johnson established the Committee for the Preservation of the White House. Today, the White House, symbol of the greatness of America, receives over one and a half million visitors every year. Image Size: 13.5 x 15 in. Overall Size: 20.25 x 22 in. Unframed. (B05971)

Outram arrived looking remarkably well... [The Highlanders] caused an immense sensation marching through the town in their kilts. The Persians think they are our great warriors... their force amounted to eight regiments of infantry, 18 guns and four or five thousand irregular horse... The Persians seem really anxious to cultivate friendship with us...'), news of mutual friends ('...what a 1000 pities all our fellows are marrying, it hampers a Regiment in every way...'), complaints of the Bombay postal system ('...a disgrace to any Christian country, a foul blot upon the 19th century...'), reports of mutinies in India ('...most exaggerated...'), and withdrawal (...'I suppose I shall be the last to embark from here...'); (ii) one letter from aboard the Falkland giving a description of the Seychelle Islands ('...every species of tropical fruit...The roads are lined with roses, myrtles & oleander... the whole island almost is in a state of nature... the root of the manioc which grows like a weed makes excellent white bread... people are too lazy... no money is ever spent on improvements... the style of living is very different... I don't think they even have tiffin or dinner, breakfast seems to be the meal... turkey, ham, curries, fish, salads, ducks stewed in olives... with claret... fancy eating all this at 10 in the morning...'); (iii) eight letters from Zanzibar as British Consul, describing being greeted by the Sultan on arrival ('...he gave a capital dinner in the European style but only sherbet to drink... the English Consul is the only person here the Sultan calls on...'), hospitality ('...the French Consul... has a French cook... would have done credit to the Café de Paris... The American Consul... can't speak a word of French... only language in which he can make himself understood is the Sowahili or negro language... I laughed when I heard them salute each other with 'Jambo Monsieur'...'), scenery and abundant produce ('...like a fine park... huge mango trees, groves of oranges etc...'), arrival of slaves ('...they all wear a wooden ticket round the neck...') and slave ships ('...they come to try to bully the Sultan into consenting to a slave trade, but they find it no go... they pretend it is not a slave trade that the negroes are only 'engaged' to serve for a term of years and go willingly...'), cholera ('...raging here... carried off thousands of people...'), threat of attack from Muscat ('...there will most likely be a good deal of fighting... There are 25000 wild Africans here & a firing & yelling is kept up all day... & kill 2 or 3 people daily by accident...'), the arrival of Burton and Speke ('...Speke has done much more than Burton, he left Burton after surveying the Tanganika Lake which is about 400 miles long and went alone 25 days journey North where he discovered Lake Nianza... unknown to any...'), his low opinion of Burton ('...Speke is a right good jolly resolute follow, Burton is not fit to hold a candle to him... Speke works, Burton lies on his back all day & picks other people's brains...'), arrival of explorer Albrecht Roscher from the interior ('...Burton is very jealous of him...') and his discovery of Lake Nyassa ('...the first white man who has ever done so... There is a report he has been murdered... we are very anxious about him... Speke is going with 50 armed men...'), French designs on the colony ('...all very savage altho' outwardly polite... they want to get rid of the Sultan...'), the quashing of the rebellion of the El Harth Arabs ('...the Sultan's brother who was backed up by the French... The rebel tribe has suffered severely... the English are in high favour here now...'), his own legacy ('...I have lately emancipated 3700 slaves here... I was occupied from daylight to dark for 6 weeks having the slaves brought up and writing a certificate of freedom for each...'), and much else, c.96 pages, creased with some small tears along folds, one small portion excised to remove postmark, rust staining from old paperclips, some integral address panels with red wax seals, 8vo, Bushire, Karrack, Seychelle Islands, British Consulate Zanzibar, 28 December 1856 to 22 June 1860Footnotes:'ENGLISH INFLUENCE IS SUPREME HERE': LETTERS FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL IN ZANZIBAR & HIS FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF THE ANGLO-PERSIAN WARA wide-ranging, closely written and detailed correspondence beginning with Rigby's first-hand experience of the Anglo-Persian war of November 1856-April 1857. During his next posting as British Consul in Zanzibar, against a vividly portrayed background of life on the island, he speaks of his great successes in fighting the slave trade, the quashing of the Burghash rebellion, describes assisting several explorers and reveals his personal thoughts on the rivalry between Burton and Speke (see Lot 89).These letters were retained in the papers of Christopher Palmer Rigby, extracts from which were published in his daughter's memoir, General Rigby, Zanzibar and the Slave Trade, published in 1935.For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Jules Leleu (French, 1883-1961), an Art Deco sycamore parquetry cabinet, with four cupboards, inlaid with pewter, flanked with plain capitals and columns, stamped '21667' and signed to one of the central doors, 189.5cm wide52.5cm deep155cm highJules Leleu (1883-1961)Born into a family of artisans and artists in Boulogne-sur-Mer in Northern France, Jules Leleu was one of the fathers of French Art Deco design. Although he ‘never achieved the international fame of Jacques-Émile Ruhlmann, Jean Michel Frank, or Le Corbusier,’The New York Times once wrote, ‘he was just as successful and probably more prolific than his better-known contemporaries.’Leleu exhibited at the prestigious ‘Exposition des Arts Decoratifs’ in 1925, for which he designed the chairs for the Grand Salon and the Music Room, both part of the French Embassy Exhibition, and also exhibited a complete suite of furniture in his own space on the Esplanade des Invalides. He won a Grand Prize at the 1925 Exposition, and one of his pieces was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum in New York City.Often compared with the furniture designs of Ruhlmann, Leleu’s chairs, tables, and cabinets emphasized simple shapes, exotic woods, and marquetry, and inlaid ivory and other embellishments. As these techniques had been brought to France from the Orient, Leleu employed Oriental craftspeople for this work. Hamanaka, one of the great masters of lacquer work, and the famed Jean Dunand, who had learned the skills from Hamanaka, collaborated with Leleu on pieces where lacquer was an element.Leleu was very prolific, and was also constantly evolving and developing his styles. The awards that he won brought him many important clients and commissions, including the ocean liners Ile de France and the famed and ill-fated Normandie. Among other important commissions were a dining room for the Elysée Palace, and, later on, the Grand Salon des Ambassadeurs at La Societé des Nations in Geneva, called the Salon Leleu, and is still in existence. The collection comes from the descendants of Mrs Celestine Galani, the wife of John Galani, who ran a Shipping Company, and who was a friend of Jules Leleu. She commissioned him in the 1940s, to decorate her entire apartment at 81 Avenue Marceau in Paris. Their flat was less than one mile from the Maison Leleu which was at 65 Avenue Franklin Roosevelt, in the 8th arrondissement, in Paris. Condition report: No shelves, knocked edges. Lot 577

A RARE YELLOW MARBLE FIGURE OF AVALOKITESHVARA, NORTHERN QI DYNASTY China, 550-577. Elegantly carved in the form of Avalokiteshvara standing sturdily on a round lotus base supported by a rectangular plinth, the figure portrayed with both elbows bent, adorned in robes cascading in voluminous folds, the serene expression framed by a cowl. Condition: Extensive wear, encrustations and weathering with areas of erosion. Minor losses. Old and visible repair to two vertical fissures. Overall condition exactly as expected from a statue of this age. Provenance: From an old Swiss private collection. Weight: 1021.7 g Dimensions: Height 22.3 cm This rare statue displays the major artistic developments of the Northern Qi dynasty, one of the most vibrant periods in the history of Chinese lapidary work, when carvers began incorporating a heightened awareness of the human body in their works. The rounded contours clothed in lightweight robes evidence this first attempt at naturalism and mark an important shift from the strict linearity of the preceding Northern Wei dynasty. The collapse of the Wei dynasty and resultant split of China into the Northern Qi (550-577) dynasty in the east and the Northern Zhou (557-581) dynasty in the west, had a profound influence on Buddhist doctrine and art in China. While the Gandharan and Mathuran schools of Kushan India had influenced the art of the Northern Wei, Northern Qi carvers turned to the sensuous sculptures of the Gupta School for inspiration. This approach to the human body is best displayed in the sculptures of the Northern and Southern Xiantangshan caves, situated between Henan and Hebei, close to the capital Ye, and in votive statues such as the present. These sculptures feature rounder figures dressed in unobtrusive elegant robes, lacking the heavy straight folds of drapery of the preceding dynasty, and a naturalistic, more benevolent approach to the rendering of facial expressions.
