Lot 8064

Griffangelschwert aus Bronze, Urnenfelderzeit (Stufe Hallstatt A), Westeuropa, 11. - 10. Jhdt. v. Chr. A Western European hilt sword made of bronze, Urnfield Culture (Hallstatt A period), 11th - 10th century B.C. A Western European hilt sword made of bronze, Urnfield Culture (Hallstatt A period), 11th - 10th century B.C.The grip tang sword in typical Western European design. The tang is blunt at the top, extending down into a triangular plate after approx. 3 cm. The plate has two rivet holes or notches (based on the earlier grip plate swords) and flares out where it joins the blade. It cannot be said with any certainty whether the slots for the rivets on the edge were closed due to minimal chipping along the edge. Either case is possible. From there, the laurel-shaped blade extends with almost parallel cutting edges in the upper and middle section. The narrow chamfers are clearly offset from the slightly domed central part. Minor notches along the cutting edges. Otherwise, excellently preserved sword of the late Bronze Age with an attractive "river patina", which allows the metallic background to shimmer through. Length 56.7 cm.Provenance: From an old Belgian private collection, acquired in the Belgian art trade in the 80s.Condition: II -

History The first prototype Land Rover was built up over the summer of 1947 and had been completed by mid-October that year. It was built on the chassis of a war surplus Jeep, and had a 1389cc four-cylinder petrol engine. This prototype had its steering wheel in the middle. This concept proved impractical and was abandoned. The first production Land Rovers retained the 80-inch wheelbase of the prototype and pre-production models. They all had 1595cc the four-cylinder petrol engine. Demands for more power and torque in the Land Rover led to the development of a 2-litre engine, essentially a big-bore version of the older four-cylinder. This was introduced in autumn 1951 on the 1952 models. The 1952 and 1953 models were distinguished visually by a new radiator grille in the shape of an inverted T, which was simpler to manufacture than the 1951 type with its circular cut-outs. These were also the first Land Rovers (Tickford Station Wagons excepted) to have exterior door handles. Bronze Green was still the only standard body colour. Overview 1951 Land Rover Series 1 80” RAF (Manual) – 702 XUVThis car rolled off the production line at Lode Lane on 30th August 1951. Wearing the new inverted T grill and packing a 2.0l engine. It was sold direct to the RAF in its RAF blue colouring. In 1960 it was given a 4th line repair (major overhaul) and put to work on Glider Tow retrieval. It became a civilian vehicle on 2nd January 1968. Eventually this series 1 was parked up in a barn until 2008. In 2009 the car was issued with an age-related plate. However, the certified factory record and other communication explains why this is. The current vendor bought the Landy in 2020 and set to work on a full nut and bolt restoration. There are copious amounts of invoices, as well as other documentation outlining the validity of this very rare RAF 80” 2.0l Series 1 Land Rover. The canvas is supplied by Exmoor Trim and is correct. The car now stands in a freshly restored condition and possibly looks just as good as the day it left the factory. With such rarity in condition and being rarer still due to it RAF lineage. This really is a true enthusiast/ collector’s piece. I doubt we will see this again.  View more - https://hansonsclassics.com/car/1951-land-rover-series-1-80-raf-manual/

Getz-Gentle, Stone Vessels of the Cyclades in the Early Bronze Age, Penn State University, 1996, p. 249, no. B29.The sizes of kandiles can vary considerably, from approximately 7cm-37cm in height, of which the above collared vase is a sizeable example. The lack of metal tools made hollowing out the interiors of these vases particularly time-consuming and as a result the vessels remain thick-walled. Despite such challenges, the symmetry and pleasing form indicate the artistic skill of the sculptors. The name 'kandila' refers to Greek church lamps which are similar in shape although it is unlikely that ancient kandiles were ever used in this way. For a discussion on kandiles see L. Fitton, Cycladic Art, The British Museum, 1989, p. 27-29.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Three Central European bronze 'ritually broken' swords Late Bronze Age, circa 13th-10th Century B.C.47.3cm, 42.5cm and 29cm long (3)Footnotes:Provenance:Kuizenga collection, the Netherlands, formed from 1970s onwards.Acquired in Austria 11th July 1987; 26th May 1989; and 1st December 1990.There are various theories on why hoards of Bronze Age swords may have been broken: perhaps they belonged to vanquished enemies and by breaking and bending weapons it ensured that they could not be used in the afterlife. They may have been offered as a sacrifice to the gods or perhaps were simply scrap metal. For a discussion of the idea that weapons, in their capacity as extensions of warriors' bodies, and may have substituted for humans in ritual depositions, see C. Horn &L Melheim, 'Tales of Hoards and Swordfighters in Early Bronze Age Scandinavia: The Brand New and the Broken', The Norwegian Archaeological Review, vol. 47 (1), 2014, pp. 18-41.This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

For 'Meritorious Service to Athletics in Wales 1954' and acknowledging 2nd in 2220 yards at 'Athletics Match Great Britain v France, London August 1st 1949'Provenance: private collection Monmouthshire, consigned by Ken Jones' nephewAuctioneers note: Ken Jones will forever be remembered as the man who scored the vital try that helped Wales to beat New Zealand at Cardiff Arms Park in 1953 - the last time Wales beat the All Blacks. The flying Newport winger latched on to a cross-kick from Clem Thomas with five minutes left to play and transformed an 8-8 draw into a famous 13-8 Welsh victory. Yet there were many more golden moments in one of the greatest British sporting careers of the past 60 years. Unquestionably Wales's greatest all-rounder, Jones was often asked to name his finest achievement. It was a task he warmed to, had to take his time over, but he always came up with the same answer. Was it that try against the All Blacks in 1953, or the near length-of-the-field score against New Zealand for the British and Irish Lions in 1950 - still recalled as one of the greatest tries ever scored at Auckland's Eden Park? It could have been any of the eight tries he scored to help Wales win Grand Slams in 1950 and 1952. In fact, he could have picked any one of the record-equalling 17 Welsh tries he scored in a then-world-record 44 appearances for his country between 1947 and 1957. And there were countless heroic deeds for his club in a 293-match career that included 145 tries and two seasons as captain. It was not, however, his rugby achievements that received top billing from the man himself, but his exploits on the athletics track. He had started out as the All-India sprint champion during the Second World War and graduated to become the captain of the British track and field team at the 1954 European Championships, where he won a silver medal in the sprint relay. He was a bronze medallist at the 1954 Commonwealth Games over 2,300 metres for Wales and the proud owner of four Welsh sprint record and 17 domestic titles. The ultimate thrill was competing at an Olympic Games. "When I think back on my career as both a rugby player and an athlete, I would have to pick the 1948 Olympic Games as the highlight," said Jones: Reaching the semi-finals of the 100 metres, and being among the 12 fastest men in the world, as well as winning a silver medal in the relay, has to top the lot. At first, Jones and his team mates Alistair McCorquodale, John Gregory and John Archer were presented with the gold medal, despite finishing behind the American quartet. The United States team finished six yards ahead of the home team - 40.6sec to 41.3sec - but were disqualified for allegedly running out of the change-over box on the first baton-change between Barney Ewell and Lorenzo Wright. Wembley Stadium was the home of athletics at the London Games of 1948. "It was fascinating being able to run there - the atmosphere was electric and it was a bit scary initially," Jones said: To be elevated into first place was a marvellous bonus. Unfortunately, it only lasted for a few days. The Americans appealed and three days later a jury of appeal viewed films of the race and ruled the change-over was legal. We were called back to Wembley from our Uxbridge camp and asked to hand back our gold medals. It took almost a month for us to have our silver medals sent to us. Even so, coming through two rounds of the 100 metres and reaching the semi-final gave me just as much of a thrill.Born in Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, in 1921 and a product of West Mon Grammar School, Ken Jones spent most of his working life as a teacher at Newport High School. During the war he served in India as a sergeant in the RAF, and it was a victory over 100 yards at the All-Indian Olympic Games at Christmas 1945 that kick-started his athletics career. The following year he won the Welsh 100m and 200m crowns for the first time - titles he would go on to win every year up to 1954, except 1950, when he was on tour in New Zealand with the Lions. "Those victories in 1946 got me selected for the British team to run in Oslo and Cologne and that really was my big breakthrough," Jones recalled. "I got picked as an Olympic possible."Ken Jones also reported on rugby and athletics in Wales for the Sunday Express from 1958 until 1985, he became President of Newport Athletic Club, which incorporates Newport Rugby Club, but resigned in 1995, having served the club for almost 50 years. "I cannot accept or live with the professionalism in rugby now," he said:Condition: viewing advised, vests commensurate with age, staining, sun fading, Olympic Vest has foxing, and a hole above waist level (please see images)
