Iron Age Celtic Iron Looped and Socketted Axe700-600 BC A rare English found transitional type of socketted and looped axe, following the traditional late Bronze Age forms having an oval socket mouth with thickened rim, the wedge-shaped blade with slightly convex cutting edge, a single side-loop to secure to an L-shaped wooden haft. See Smith, R.A. British Museum Guide to Early Iron Age Antiquities 1925, fig. 82; for similar examples; recorded with Portable Antiquities Scheme, reference FAKL-38D115. 377 grams, 11 cm. (4 1/4"). Found Middleham, North Yorkshire, UK, in 2010. The PAS entry includes the following text: This object is one of a small number of socketed axes made from wrought iron. While the form is relatively easy to cast in a two-part mould and a clay/sand core to form its hollow socket it would be very difficult to produce as a forging. Iron socketed axes were rapidly replaced by axes in which the haft passes through an eye, the type that remains in use today. This axe must, therefore, represent the transition from bronze to iron. Parallels exist for iron socketed axes with examples from Walthamstow, Essex (Smith 1925, Fig. 82) and Cold Kitchen Hill, Wilts (Cunliffe 1975, p 268, Fig. 14:2 5) neither of which is quite like this find although the latter appears to share the curved loop side and straight back seen on the Middleham axe. A better parallel was found during excavations at Fiskerton, Lincolnshire. This is a find of note and has been designated as of national importance.Fine conditon, treated and stable. Excessively rare.Starting Price: £200

Lot 1286

Medieval Bronze Pope Urban V Papal Office Seal Matrix Attributable to Cardinal Adam Easton1362-1370 AD An important vesica seal matrix with complex design comprising a central agnus dei (Lamb of God) and Holy Grail within a circular border; male heads above and below, the upper tonsured and probably a portrait of Urban; the lower of a bearded saint, likely to be St Peter and with foliage within the spandrels; the circular panel with Gothic legend `agnus:dei:qvitollis peccati mundi` (Lamb of God who takest away the sins of the world) and inside `urbanis:quintus` (Urban the Fifth) and to the outer band `sancta:aualtane:martris. [foliage] et: cap:ila:beate:marie:de:scala:celi:` (Holy Mary, blessed, hallowed in heaven with the martyrs); the reverse with solder showing that a long rib and suspension was originally fitted. 31 grams, 65 mm. (2 1/2"). Ex Winterton collection, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, UK; recorded by Doncaster Museum and the British Museum (reference number P&E /65/03/JPR, 9th January 2004) and seen by the British Library; found near Gainsborough, Nottinghamshire, UK, 2003. Cardinal Adam Easton (born uncertain, died Rome, 1397/8, of `old age`) was almost certainly of peasant birth from Easton, Norfolk and was taken in and educated by the church; his potential was recognised and he later joined the Benedictine monastery attached to Norwich Cathedral. He rose in the church becoming the Benedictine proctor at Avignon, taking the position of his friend Thomas Brynton and to become a cardinal and the most important cleric in the church, second only to Pope Urban V (himself a former Benedictine). He is recorded as having travelled between the papal palace at Avignon and England, delivering a letter from Urban to Edward III telling the English King to restrain the activities of his men at arms in Italy and it is likely that he would have been involved in Urban`s quarrel with Edward III of England over the payment of the annual tribute (dating back to King John) which occasioned the antipapal polemics of John Wyclif. He is also known to have travelled in England with his association with Simon Langham. His tomb, which once bore the inscription Skilled in all things, renowned father Adam. The great theologian, who was cardinal of England, which was his fatherland, the title of St Cecilia was given to him. He died and ascended to heaven in the year 1397, in the month of September can still be found in the Church of St Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome. Pope Urban V (born 1310, died 19 December 1370), born William de Grimoard, reigned as Pope from 1362 to 1370. In September 1362, Abbot William arrived in Avignon, returning from Naples, where he had been sent by Pope Innocent IV as papal legate, only to learn that the pope had died. At that time, a conclave was already being held to elect a successor to the recently-deceased pope. In a surprise move, on the 28th of that month he himself was elected Pope. He then took the name of Urban, the fifth pope with that name to rule the Church. He was not even a bishop at the time of his election, and had to be consecrated as one before his coronation. This was done on 6th November by Cardinal Andouin Aubert, the nephew of his predecessor. He served as the sixth pope in the Avignon Papacy. Urban boarded a ship at Corneto heading for France on 5th September 1370, Avignon on the 24th of the same month. A few days later he fell severely ill. Feeling his death approaching, he asked that he might be moved from the Papal Palace to the nearby residence of his brother, Angel, whom he had made a cardinal, that he might be close to those he loved. He died there on 19 December 1370. The seal matrix can be firmly dated to the papacy of Urban V (1362-1370 AD) as it bears his name. It is the seal of a papal office holder; a man of high position close to the Pope. It is likely to be the seal used by Cardinal Adam Easton, lost in England during his travels between Avignon and the English court and church; most probably as a result of the reverse rib, which would have provided a suspension loop by which it could be worn or secured, becoming accidentally detached.Extremely fine condition, professionally cleaned. Excessively rare and important.Starting Price: £1500

The 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games gold prize medal awarded to the British swimmer Jennie Fletcher for the 100 metres Freestyle Relay, 33.5mm, struck in silver-gilt (as usual for 1912 1st Place team awards), designed by Erik Lindberg and Bertram Mackennal, two maidens crowning a victorious athlete, the reverse with a herald proclaiming the Olympic Games, Jennie Fletcher became Britain’s first female Olympic swimming medallist when she won an individual bronze in the 1912 100 metres freestyle final behind two Australians (Fanny Durack, who was using the then brand-new ‘Australian Crawl’ technique, and Mina (Wilhelmina) Wylie). In the relay event gold went to the British team of Bella Moore, Jennie, Annie Speirs and Irene Steer ahead of West Germany and Austria. Jennie swam an outstanding second leg to help earn the British girls a World Record as well as Olympic victory. Born on 19 March, 1890 in Leicester, the seventh of nine children in a family of five girls and four boys, Jennie Fletcher attended Mellow Street Board School and participated as often as possible in swimming competitions and exercises. She later wrote: “Swimming to me was my greatest pleasure and no encouragement was needed for me to compete in polo, diving or swimming. There was no mixed swimming in those days but with special permission my brother Ben was allowed to pace me.” From the age of 11 she was coached at Leicester’s Cossington Street Baths by the celebrated Jack Jarvis, whose characteristic freestyle employing the ‘Jarvis-Nuttall Kick’ had already brought him numerous awards (including two Olympic gold medals for the 1,000 and 4,000 metre open water races swum in the River Seine, Paris, in 1900). Jennie recalled: “Most of the early swimming was single arm and trudgen with the scissors kick going to the crawl in the latter stages. My training was not regimented but consisted of long walks, [and] skipping accompanied by deep breathing exercises.” In 1906, at the age of 34, Jarvis added a silver and two bronze medals to his own Olympic tally in the interim Athens Games, by which time Jennie was challenging for her first British record for the Ladies’ 100 yards freestyle. She went on to win 6 Amateur Swimming Association titles for the distance before 1912, setting a new world record in 1909. Working long hours with her father, who nevertheless gave her great support and encouragement as an amateur, she succeeded in winning numerous trophies and awards. She retained the Dewar Shield after winning it three years in succession, broke her own record on 11 occasions, and became British champion 6 times. At the London Olympics of 1908 it was decided, after much deliberation, that swimming competition for Ladies would be permitted; however uncertainty and a late decision meant that in the event there were too few entries to proceed. At the time this must have come as a huge disappointment for Jennie, whose parents had recently declined on her behalf the opportunity of a professional tour of America with the celebrated Annette Kellerman. At Stockholm in 1912, however, there was a strong British Ladies’ contingent, chaperoned by Jack Jarvis’s sister. Jennie later said: “The crowning moment of my career was when King Gustav of Sweden placed the classic laurel wreath on my head, put the gold medal round my neck, and said, ‘Well done, England!’”. In 1917 Jennie married Henry Hill Hyslop and the couple settled in Canada, where they farmed and had six children. Jennie died in 1968. Provenance: Bequeathed by the recipient Jennie Hyslop, née Fletcher, to her son Henry Irving Hyslop (1920-2000); bequeathed in turn by H.I. Hyslop to his daughter (and Jennie’s granddaughter) Heather, on behalf of whom it is now offered for sale. A copy of H.I. Hyslop’s Will, including codicil dated 1994 specifying the bequest to Heather of “… my mother’s gold medal from the 1912 Olympics… “ is included in the lot, together with a contemporary portrait postcard captioned ‘Jennie Fletcher Worlds 100 yds Champion’, showing Jennie wearing Leicester Ladies’ Swimming Club costume and a championship medal (see illustration). Copies of other relating documents, including a letter written by Jennie in 1965 to the compiler of a sports encyclopedia, are also offered with the lot. Other items of memorabilia relating to Jennie’s swimming career, including her Olympic laurel wreath, were donated by her daughter to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

ARTHUR FLEISCHMANN (1896-1990) BUST OF KATHLEEN FERRIER, CIRCA 1954 Terracotta, signed A. FLEISCHMANN 42cm high Provenance: April 22nd 2012 is the centenary of the birth of the internationally renowned English contralto Kathleen Mary Ferrier (1912-1953). In 1946 Ferrier made her stage debut, in the Glyndebourne Festival premiere of Benjamin Britten`s opera The Rape of Lucretia. A year later she made her first appearance as Orfeo in Gluck`s Orfeo ed Euridice, a work with which she became particularly associated. By her own choice, these were her only two operatic roles. As her reputation grew, Ferrier formed close working relationships with major musical figures, including Britten, Sir John Barbirolli and Bruno Walter. She became known internationally through her three tours to the United States between 1948 and 1950 and her many visits to continental Europe. Tragically Ferrier died of cancer at the height of her fame in October 1953 at the age of 41. Arthur John Fleischmann (1896-1990) trained in Prague, Budapest and Vienna and worked in France and Italy before travelling to Australia. He spent six months working in Bali in 1938 and arrived in Australia the following year. He was hailed as a modernist sculptor and exhibited in Sydney and Melbourne with Lyndon Dadswell and Daphne Mayo. Fleischmann left Australia in 1948 and settled in London where he became a Fellow of the RBS and exhibited widely. This bust of Ferrier was sculpted to commemorate her life and the bronze version was unveiled at a memorial concert at King George`s Hall in her home town of Blackburn, Lancashire on October 8th 1954, a year after her death. It is now held at Blackburn Museum.
