2 examples of cast bronze Akan / Ashanti gold weights/ One depicting a turtle, and the other is what appears to be a chameleon. The colour and patina of the turtle would suggest it has greater age than the chameleon. Approximately 7.1cm length to the turtle, and 6cm length to the chameleon. Condition: good. Both examples have darkened with age and show a good patina from handling. Minor traces of oxidisation / verdigris spotting in places.

James Gowland of London, a rare mid 19th century giant gilt bronze single fuseé carriage timepiece, the circular silver dial signed Jas. Gowland, 52 London Wall, within a foliate engraved mask, the single fusee movement with lever escapement, the backplate similarly signed to the dial, 22cm high to handle**conditionreport**The lever escapement sticks when tilted but does go for a few seconds indicating that the spring is intact. Bronze Age gold bead. Circa 1500-1100 BCE. 0.56g. 10mm. A biconical bead with slightly dished, concave faces and a central hole. The bead is similar to those recorded from Bourton-on-the-Water, Gloucestershire and Harlow, Essex, the former from a stratified Middle Bronze Age context. Ref: Varndell 2000, 12, no.1; 2005/6, 17, 270, no.6. Middle Bronze Age gold beads are a relatively rare find and can be contextualised with reference to the so-called 'ornament horizon(s)', which see a proliferation of bronze and gold ornaments in Southern England and Britain (respectively) during the period c.1400-1100 BCE. Ref: Smith 1959; Roberts 2007. This example was found in Essex 1987.

Bronze Age, socketed and looped Axe, c. 800 BC, 10.5cm x 4.9cm, elongated trapezoid outline with a straight cutting edge, decorated with three curving ribs on each side descending from a flared socket mouth. In very fine condition with a patchy green deposit over a smooth light brown patina £150-£200 --- Provenance: From a UK collection, aquired in the past ten years. Believed to have been originally found in Somerset.

Lot 223

Bronze Age. a pair of socketed and looped axe moulds , c. 1000-800 BC., upper half 10.6 cm x 5.2 cm but missing left side which has fragmented with four small additional pieces reaffixed. Lower half is complete 11.7 cm x 5.6 cm. The inner surface has a recess for a socketed and looped axe. There are two projecting pins for holding the central valve (now missing). On the outer face is a moulded chevron or V-shape with pellet terrminals, there is a loop on both halves. Lower half is fine, with only a chip to the front edge, the upper half is damaged and incomplete. £400-£600 --- Provenance: Found together by metal detector in Sibton in Suffolk in 2022. The upper half was damaged through recent ploughing. Moulds of Bronze age axes are rare but a recent find from Wales is currently going through the treasure process.

Lot 247

Romano-British, 1st century AD, a bronze Boar figurine, 5.2 cms x 3.7 cms, solid cast moulding, the Boar is standing on four upright legs, with a ridged back, while the body is decorated with fine diagonal grooves indicating the coarse hair. The head has prominent ears and narrow recessed eyes, projecting curved tusks and a flat D-shaped snout with two indented nostrils. the open mouth is a straight slit. The tail at the rear is decorated with grooves, curled and hangs down. Intact, about extremely fine and in excellent condition with a smooth olive green patina; a charming and rare item £1,000-£1,200 --- Provenance: Found at Beltinge in Kent. The Boar was a symbol for both the Celts and the Romans. The XX Valeria Roman legion took part in the invasion of Britain in 43 AD and were initially based at Colchester. The legionary emblem was a charging running Boar. The Druids regarded the Boar as sacred and the animal was a symbol of strength and fertility appearing on a number of Iron Age coins.
