Bedoukian collection, Connecticut, 1960s; and thence by descent. This figure with a horned conical cap was likely cast in a double mould, as the seam lines are clearly visible on the side of the figure. He, a Cornishman, born in Gulval in 1930, acquired an early appreciation of art visiting Newlyn Gallery with his family. In his early career Graham worked in London writing for the Daily Express and he was responsible for one of the first Arts columns in a tabloid paper, but in 1960 he opened an antique shop in Chelsea. Inspired by trips to Italy, he displayed early furniture and antiquities in an uncluttered modern setting, a technique he later utilised in his own home. The Darks moved back to Cornwall in 1980 and at their home in Flushing, and later Truro, curated an impressive body of art and antiquities with a particular focus on Cornish artists such as Paul Feiler and Terry Frost, who both became close friends. The paintings were displayed alongside mid-century modern designer furniture by Eames, Bertoia and Magistretti, and arrangements of antiquities, thought of as ‘ensembles’ by Graham. Warm, charming, and generous hosts, they entertained their artistic circle of friends in their exquisitely arranged home, and it is a privilege for us to handle their beautiful possessions today. We hope to present them to you with as much care and consideration as the Darks used, and that those two remarkable connoisseurs would have approved.Graham Dark 1930-2015Mollie Dark 1928-2024 This remarkable, complex clock does not run, it's hour repeat works. Lot 29

Very rare British Museum authenticated Late Iron Age Decorated Bronze 'Horn Cap' A cast bronze late Iron Age Horn Cap. Cast in three pieces, an upper and lower discoidal element joined by a central, tubular section and with a decorative roundel fitted in the top.                                                                               This type, with a wide cornice and flat diaphragm was classified by Sir Cyril Fox as type B III. These enigmatic objects were once thought to be chariot decorations but more recent thinking has proposed them as the heads from ceremonial maces or sceptres. What is certain is that they are extremely rare. There aren’t many examples recorded and, of these, only a few are decorated. This Horn Cap has wonderfully executed decoration in the form of an incised and punched la Tene style swastika, a fantastic demonstration of Celtic artistry. The swastika, or four-armed spiral (tetraskelion) was a popular motif during the Iron Age and appears on a wide variety of objects, from funerary urns to the Battersea shield, but rarely in such an elaborate fashion as here.                                                                                                                           A prestige piece such as this would certainly have belonged to an individual of high status in Iron Age society; a Chieftan, King or maybe even a Druid. A similar Horn Cap, with more rudimentary swastika decoration was discovered at Llyn Cerrig Bach on the island of Anglesey, famous sanctuary of the Druids. Other examples have have been found at Maiden Castle, Ham Hill and there have been a small cluster from the Thames Valley. This example was uncovered near Colchester in Essex, ancient Camulodunum, site of an Iron Age oppidum and the capitol of the Trinovantes and Catuvellauni tribes. c. 2nd - 1st Century BC Discovered during a metal detecting rally in 2005 and repaired. With its own display stand. Accompanied by a report from the British Museum, with detailed drawings. At the conclusion to the base of the second page, Rossini annotates `Un Rien offert à Madame Bouland, par son ami et admirateur G. Lot 213

Y  A PAIR OF LOUIS XVI ORMOLU MOUNTED, MARQUETRY AND PARQUETRY SIDE CABINETS BY J H RIESENER, ADAPTED FROM CORNER CABINETS Each of slight stepped serpentine form, sycamore, fruitwoods and Amaranth with a rectangular mottled russet marble top inset within gilt bronze petal mouldings, drawer to the frieze mounted with guilloche enclosing flowerheads with acorns and oak leaves, above a pair of tambour doors inlaid with large sprays of moss and cabbage-roses, hollyhocks and tulips, one stamped faintly twice on the front right corner J.H. RIESENER 100cm high, 101cm wide, 29cm deep Provenance: Sotheby's London, 1st July 1966, Lot 134 where described as: 'A HIGHLY IMPORTANT PAIR OF EARLY LOUIS XVI ORMOLU-MOUNTED MARQUETRY AND PARQUETRY SIDE CABINETS, Signed J H Riesener' when purchased for the late owner's mother by Pelham Galleries, London The Estate of a deceased Gentleman. The original 1966 Sotheby's catalogue and a copy of the receipt will be made available to the successful purchaser. Jean-Henri Riesener maître in 1768. In their present form as side cabinets, they can be usefully compared with a single cabinet made by Riesener in 1773 for Pierre-Elisabeth de Fontanieu, the Intendant et Contrôleur Général des Meubles de la Couronne, for his own official residence in the Place Louis XV in Paris. Fontanieu's cabinet was in the famous collection of John Jones, bequeathed to the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1882. Like the present pair, the cabinet was converted from a corner cupboard, probably in the mid-19th century (V&A 1082-1882). Another comparison is with the commode in the Hôtel du Garde Meuble, Paris (Al-Thani collection) which Riesener delivered in 1775 for the bedroom of Madame Randon de Pommery, wife of the Garde-Général of the Garde Meuble de la Couronne. The commode is fitted with almost identical central apron mounts and has strikingly similar guilloche panels to the side frieze drawers - interspersed with comparable oval paterae mounts above comparable scrolling floral feet mounts. The commode was sold from the Desmarais Collection, Christie's New York, 30 April 2019 lot 51, $1,155,000. Literature: Pierre Verlet, Le mobilier Français du XVIIIème Siècle, 1967, pl. 13. F.J.B. Watson, Louis XVI Furniture, fig. 54. P. Kjellberg, The French Furniture of the XVIIIth Century, Paris, 1989, p. 696, cat A. Comparative Literature : Helen Jacobsen, Rufus Bird & Mia Jackson, Jean-Henri Riesener: Cabinetmaker to Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, London, 2020 We are grateful to Rufus Bird, Deputy Surveyor and Surveyor of the Queen's Works of Art 2010-2021 for his contribution to this catalogue entry. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and useSome old chips and splits, some old repairs, some minor losses. Both cabinets have locks to the doors (of late 19th or early 20th century period) The keys are present to operate them. Please note: as catalogued, these have been adapted from their original form. In the original cataloguing it is stated that they are converted from encoignure. It is possible that they were converted from another form of cabinetThe cabinets incorporate various later timbers and veneers throughout. Period elements have likely been adapted also. There is some variation in the construction of the two cabinets. It is impossible to qualify exactly how the conversion has been made. As the cabinets have changed form and the mounts match the current outline of the cabinets, it is likely that some or all gilt metal mounts have been altered/ changed or associated to the cabinets during the process of converting their form. Some repairs to the marble tops with filler to disguise losses and one with disguised metal brace securing an old break at one corner (see images)The cabinets were previously 'anchored'/ secured to the wall in position or would fall forwards. They would need to be secured for use now so they do not fall forwards. There is a chance that the main door panels were not tambour door originally and have been later converted to tambour The elements of marquetry itself appear to be of 18th century period. AFTER ERNEST MEISSONIER (1815-1891), AN EQUESTRIAN BRONZE OF NAPOLÉON THE 1ST IN 1814 EARLY 20TH CENTURY Sometimes titled "La Campagne de France", signed to cast E Meissonier, Siot Decauville foundry stamp, numbered 10 and C465 40cm high, the base 37cm x 16.5cm From the posthumous edition of 50 by Siot-Decauville Paris, the cast run began in 1894 and ended in around 1926. Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier is perhaps best known for his historical and academic paintings. His work as a sculptor was relatively unknown even within his own lifetime- an artistic practice limited to smaller more private works largely for his own entertainment and practical use. It is likely that he modelled work- usually horse related- in wax and clay in order to achieve better and more realistic depictions in his paintings. After his death it seems that his heirs licensed reproduction of some of these works in bronze in order to help pay off the debts he'd accrued. It is thought that this particular model was used for the painting "La Campagne de France, 1814" (now in at the Musée d'Orsay). Other bronze casts from the Siot-Decauville foundry are held in museums in Bordeaux and Lille. Condition Report: With wear from use, handling and age. Storage looks to have been in a damp place resulting in verdigris build up to recesses and accumulated dirt and old wax throughout- with colour variances from oxidisation and exposure. Will greatly benefit from thorough, light sensitive clean. With some wear and marks to raised edges and details. Rein ends under horse mouth slightly distorted- and look not to be in the correct positions with some elements not connected. Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. All lots are available for inspection and Condition Reports are available on request.
