A Unique `Family Pair` of Great War Bronze Memorial Plaques to Brothers Private A. Jenkins of the 2nd Battalion,Welsh Regiment and Private W. J. Jenkins, 1st Battalion, Royal Guernsey Light Infantry/ Late Welsh Regiment. 39342 Private Arthur Jenkins of the 2nd Battalion Welsh Regiment, died of wounds on the 23rd of August 1916, aged 24 years, Son of John and Hannah Jenkins of 54 Stoughton Street, Grangetown, Cardiff; Husband of Violet Jenkins, he is Remembered with honour at the Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension 1945 Private Walter John Jenkins of the 1st Battalion Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, formerly 33872, Welsh Regiment, was killed in action on the 21st of March 1918, he has no known grave, but is Remembered with honour at the Tyne Cot Memorial. Extract from `Front Line` Newsletter Weston Front Association, South Wales, No. 20 July 1994: "Cardiff Casualties - A few weeks ago I was fortunate to pick up a couple of Death Plaques at a local antiques market. The thing that attracted me to them is that they were quite obviously a pair - that is they belonged together. The surname on each plaque is Jenkins and it was clear from their state of polish that someone had cared for them lovingly for a long time. I asked if there was any provenance but all the dealer was able to give me was that they had been brought in by someone local. Not a lot to start with bearing in mind how common the name Jenkins is in Wales but undeterred I bought them anyway. My first port of call for research was the extensive database of Gwyn Prescott and sure enough Gwyn was able to confirm the two soldiers as being from Grangetown. The following is the account of the remainder of the research which I have been able to do on the two soldiers. Jenkins, Arthur, Pte. 39342, 2nd Battalion the Welsh Regiment. Arthur Jenkins was born and enlisted in Cardiff being the son of John and Hannah Jenkins of 54, Stoughton Street, Grangetown. He was married to Violet Jenkins. He died of wounds received in action on the 23rd August 1916 while his battalion was attached to the 3rd Brigade and was fighting on the Somme. The 2nd Welsh were in the line during the closing days of July when they were involved in an attack adjacent to the Australians on Poziers Ridge. Their initial attack on Munster/Switch Line re-entrant was successful but a concerted counter attack by the Germans drove them out and back to their starting point. It is quite likely that Jenkins was involved in this attack on the 26th July but it is not certain that it was in this action that he received the wounds from which he subsequently died. On the following day the battalion was withdrawn along with the rest of the Division and remained out of action until the 12th August when the Division was sent in to relieve the 34th Division. In this period the fighting was continuous but not as heavy as at other stages of the Somme. The 2nd Welsh were involved in driving out saps so as to gradually advance on the German line. The battalion suffered heavily from sniper and shell fire. During the period 20th to 28th August the battalion lost 45 other ranks killed and 175 wounded. In view of these statistics it is considered most likely that Jenkins received his fatal wounds during this period in the line. Arthur Jenkins was 24 years of age when he died and he is buried at Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extensions (S.W. of Albert). Jenkins, Walter John. Pte. 1945 1st Battalion the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry, formerly 33872 The Welsh Regiment Walter John Jenkins, believed to be the brother of the above was born and enlisted in Cardiff and was killed in action on 21st March 1918 while his battalion was attached to the 29th Division and was serving in front of Passchendaele. Initially the RGLI took only Guernseymen in to its ranks but after heavy losses in the Battle of Cambrai men from other areas were taken into the ranks. Jenkins formed part of what is known as Draft 1, i.e. the first group of non-Guernseymen enlisted into the RGLI. Each draft was further divided into Reinforcements which were sent to France. Jenkins was part of either Reinforcements 4 or 6, sent to France in December 1917 or January 1918 since these specifically incorporate men of Draft 1 with numbers higher than 1726. At the time of his death the Passchendaele area was relatively quiet but prone to trench raiding and sniping by both sides which produced a continuous stream of casualties. On the 21st March the RGLI repelled a strong trench raid at the cost of 26 killed and 45 wounded. Jenkins was one of those killed and like many of his comrades of that small action he has no known grave being commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial to the Missing, Passchendaele, where the men of this regiment are listed under the Channel Islands Militia. It is likely that Jenkins had seen service overseas with the Welsh Regiment since he does not qualify for medals whilst with the RGLI."

THE JOHN PLAYER BRITISH GRAND PRIX TROPHY, in silver with a hardstone base by George Breuer-Weil, London 1973, signed `G. Weil` to a gilt reserve, rectangular and constructed of overlapping rough cast squares with circles cut-out, the base with two plaques, engraved `John Player Grand Prix Trophy` and `1972 Emerson Fittipaldi / John Player Special // 1973 Peter Revson / Yardley McLaren // 1974 Jody Schecter / Tyrrell // 1975 Emerson Fittipaldi / Texaco McLaren // 1976 Niki Lauda / Ferrari // 1977 James Hunt / Marlboro McLaren // 1978 Carlos Reutemann / Ferrari`, 46.5cm (18.25in) high, loaded. The official programme for the 1972 British Grand Prix, the first to be sponsored by John Player, included a picture of this trophy to introduce it to race followers around the world. It was awarded alongside the already familiar Fred Craner Memorial Trophy, a twin-handled covered cup, which the Royal Automobile Club customarily presented to the highest placed British driver to finish in the British Grand Prix. As sponsors of this event John Player replaced the R.A.C. (1950-70) and R.A.C. Woolmark (1971) and were, in turn, succeeded by Marlboro (1979-85). The 1972 British Grand Prix was held at Brands Hatch on 15th July. Emerson Fittipaldi finished 4.1 seconds ahead of Jackie Stewart to claim this trophy. Fittingly, he was behind the wheel of a Lotus 72D `John Player Special`, resplendent in what would become a legendary colour scheme of black and gold. For 1973 the British Grand Prix moved to Silverstone. The race will be remembered for a first lap pile-up when Jody Scheckter spun out on the final corner into the centre of the track. In the ensuing carnage Andrea de Adamich was to receive injuries of such severity that he was forced to retire from the sport. Jackie Stewart had taken the lead up until that point, going from fourth to first in half a lap, but he was unable to repeat the performance from the restart and spun off on lap 6 trying to regain the lead. Peter Revson went on to take first place, pushing himself into fifth spot of the Drivers` Championship, with only 10 points. In 1974 there was a return to Brands Hatch, and Jody Scheckter emerged victorious, finishing 15.3 seconds ahead of his nearest rival, Emerson Fittipaldi. Silverstone again hosted the British Grand Prix of 1975, destined to become one of the most incredible ever seen. Despite taking place on July 19th the race was marred from lap 53 by a tremendous hail storm. Jody Scheckter, James Hunt and John Donohue aquaplaned and crashed at the same corner, which then claimed Wilson Fittipaldi, Jochen Mass and John Watson. When the storm abated only six cars were left running, prompting the R.A.C. to declare that the race had offically finished on the lap when most cars were still in contention. This they deemed to be lap 55, as a result of which Emerson Fittipaldi was awarded his last ever Grand Prix title. These events tend to overshadow the fact that this race was the first Grand Prix to use a light system for the start instead of the traditional National Flag. The 1976 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch was, arguably, the most controversial ever held in the country. James Hunt was involved in a first corner crash, but instead of completing his lap back to the pits he took a short cut via an access road on the Cooper Straight. This prompted race officials to declare that, since Hunt was not on the circuit when the red flag was waved, he could not take part in the restart. When this judgement reached the partisan British crowd they began to continually chant James Hunt`s name. Fearing crowd trouble the officials recinded their verdict and sanctioned Hunt to continue. Niki Lauda led the race for 45 laps until he developed gearshift trouble which allowed Hunt to slip through and go on to win, ahead of Lauda in his ailing Ferrari. Two months later at a special hearing in France, after protests from the Italian team, Hunt was stripped of the win which was then credited to Lauda. Having initially claimed, without success, that Hunt had not completed the first lap, Ferrari then sided with two other constructors who, on the day of the race, had maintained that Hunt`s car had been pushed by mechanics, warranting his disqualification. The British Grand Prix of 1977 at Silverstone brought revenge for James Hunt who emphatically won the race without argument or debate, defeating second place Niki Lauda by a margin of 18.31 seconds. There were so many entries in this year that a pre-qualifier had to be held on the Wednesday before the race, where the Canadian Gilles Villeneuve made his debut. Also appearing for the first time was a turbo-charged car, the Renault RS01, driven by Jean-Pierre Jabouille. Ironically he was to retire from this race, and the following year`s, with turbo problems. In 1978 Carlos Reutemann took the chequered flag in the British Grands Prix, played out at Brands Hatch, to put him third in the Drivers` Championship, just above Niki Lauda, with a shared 31 points. George Breuer-Weil was born in Vienna in 1938. His family moved to England one year later. Weil studied at the Central School of Art & Craft, and at St. Martin`s School of Art in London. In 1956 he set up a studio for jewellery design and manufacture, while continuing his sculpture and painting. He made his first sculpture at the age of four. His sculptures include bronze portrait busts of Winston Churchill, Charles de Gaulle and David Ben-Gurion, and have been exhibited in London, Geneva, Tokyo and San Francisco. His work is to be found in famous private collections worldwide as well as several museums, including the British Museum. At the end of the 1970s, Weil sold his successful jewellery business and decided to concentrate exclusively on his sculpture, especially netsuke. His most famous sculpture, the King David Award, was commissioned by the State of Israel in 1970 and is presented to leading show-business personalities.

Artemis and Her Hound was well received by the critics, and one noted that `a great advance was proclaimed...by the epoch-making "Artemis"...The attitude and arrangement are altogether admirable, as well as original...from every point of view the group is beautiful`. A half-size bronze version of Artemis was exhibited by Thornycroft at the Royal Academy in 1911 [1799] and another bronze statuette at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1917-18. Literature: S. [LINCOLN ABRAHAM]: (1809-1865) American President 1861-65. A rare selection of seven irregular fragments of wallpaper from Abraham and Mary Lincoln`s bedroom of their Springfield house. The fragments (the largest measuring approx. 3 x 2.5 and the smallest approx. 1 x 1) are printed in a blue and bronze coloured pattern. Some creasing and age wear, FR to G, 7 Provenance: Abraham Lincoln lived with his family at 413 South Eighth Street in Springfield from 1844-61, before leaving for Washington to be sworn-in as President. The house, purchased by Lincoln in 1844, was the only home he ever owned. The wallpaper fragments originate from Mary Edwards Brown, granddaughter of Ninian Wirt Edwards and Elizabeth Todd Edwards, a sister of Mary Todd. The house was built in 1839 by Rev. Charles Dresser who also married Abraham and Mary Lincoln on 4th November 1842 in the home of Ninian Edwards. For the next two years the Lincoln`s lived in the Globe Hotel, where their son Robert was born. In 1844 Dresser sold the young couple his house for $1500 and in the mid-1850s the home was raised to be a full story residence with the Lincoln`s bedroom situated to the north of the second floor. After the Lincolns moved to Washington in 1861 the house was rented to Lucian Tilton, President of the Great Western Railroad. In later years it was rented to other individuals including the well-known collector O. H. Oldroyd. In 1887 Oldroyd convinced Robert Todd Lincoln to deed the property to Illinois and Oldroyd became the first official custodian. Succeeding custodians were Herman Hofferkamp, Albert S. Edwards, Mrs. Lincoln`s nephew, and his wife, and Mrs. Mary Edwards Brown, their daughter, and finally, her daughter, Virginia Stuart Brown. No changes have been made to the interior of this twelve room house since the Lincolns left. These wallpaper fragments were removed and preserved by Mary Edwards Brown who, in 1956, sold the relics and other Lincoln family property to Dorothy Kunhardt, daughter of Frederick Hill Meserve. The Dorothy Meserve Kunhardt Collection of Lincolniana, including the present wallpaper, was sold at auction by Charles Hamilton on 28th May 1981.

Norman, R.E.); Meritorious Service Medal, G.VI.R., 3rd issue (20270 W.O. Cl. 2. H. L. Norman, R.E.) official correction to surname; Khedive’s Star, undated, the Egypt medal nearly very fine, otherwise nearly extremely fine and a very rare combination of medals (8) £2000-2500 M.C. London Gazette 3 June 1916: ‘Manchester Regiment (Service Battalions). Temp. Capt. H. L. Norman, East Lanc. R., Spec. Res.’ M.I.D. London Gazette 6 March 1916 (General Sir Charles Munro’s despatch). Herbert Luxton Norman was born at Hatherleigh, Devon, and enlisted for the Royal Engineers on 7 September 1885, aged 19 years 2 months, having served previously with the 4th Devon Volunteer Rifles. He served on the Egyptian Frontier in 1888 and in operations on the Nile in 1889 (Medal and Bronze Star). After a period at Home, he served in Hong Kong from August 1898 until December 1902, by which time he had been promoted to Quarter-Master Sergeant Foreman of Works. The remainder of his service was spent at Home until his discharge at Fermoy on 6 September 1906. His L.S. & G.C. medal with Gratuity was announced in Army Order 67 of 1907. On the outbreak of war Norman was appointed Lieutenant & Quarter-Master in the 10th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment and was promoted to Captain on 1 December 1914. Attached to the Manchester Regiment, he entered the Gallipoli theatre of war in May 1915. With them he probably fought in the battles before Achi Baba and in the Third Battle of Krithia. In the latter, Lieutenant Foreshaw, 1/9th Manchester Regiment, won the Victoria Cross. For his bravery in the campaign, Norman was mentioned in despatches and awarded the Military Cross. Due to his age Norman was selected for transfer for garrison battalion, a move that he resisted by requesting a transfer to another unit, as evidenced in a report from his Brigade Commander, Brigadier-General V. Ormsby, who wrote: “I believe that Captain Norman habitually displayed great gallantry and good leadership in Gallipoli. His commanding officer is not however satisfied as to his general knowledge and capacity for the command of a company in open warfare. After interviewing Col. Morrogh and Captain Norman, and in view of the latter’s wish for transfer to another battalion, I recommend that this course be adopted. I know Captain Norman to be most painstaking and conscientious. Though nearly 49, he is tougher than many a much younger officer, and is very averse to performing garrison duties.” In 1918 he is recorded as being a Captain in the East Lancashire Regiment and a Musketry Instructor. Sold with a sepia photograph of the recipient in civilian clothes before the war; a pencil sketch of the recipient, inscribed, ‘Captain Norman, Esk Line Trenches, Gallipoli, in front of Achi Baba, 23.7.15 (signed) Eric English’; original M.I.D. Certificate, mounted on card with partial loss of initials, ‘Manchester Regt. [T.F.] T/Capt., E. Lan. R., S.R.’; copied m.i.c. and other research.

Equestrian interest, PERSIMMON - a fine silver gilt mounted horse hoof inkwell A Clark, London 1908, the hoof conventionally mounted with horse shoe to base and textured section to upper section, the hinged cover with engraved inscription, opening to reveal a simple glass inkwell, the hoof applied `PERSIMMON` 14cm Notes: the cover engraved ``Foaled April 15th 1893 Died Feb 18th 1908, Winner of the Derby St. Leger and Eclipse Stakes, also the Ascot Gold Cup Provenance: Persimmon (1893-1908) was an exceptional thoroughbred race horse and sire, who held a brief but illustrious reign over the world of British horse racing. Born of the St. Simon progeny, Persimmon was bred and raced by Albert Edward, Prince of Wales (and afterward King Edward VII). Persimmon made his debut at Royal Ascot in the Coventry Stakes (1895), where he also earned the first of what would become a series of racing victories. Persimmon went on to win the Richmond Stakes in that same year, but the pinnacle of the stallion`s career came at the 1896 Epsom Derby, where Persimmon surged forward to beat his rival, St Frusquin, in a thrilling "neck and neck" showdown. This victory acquired additional significance as it was the first horse race ever to be filmed by Robert W. Paul and Birt Acres. Other major wins included the 1896 St. Leger and Jockey Club Stakes, as well as the 1897 Ascot Gold Cup and Eclipse Stakes. However, Persimmon`s Ascot Gold Cup and Eclipse sweep came with a price- the hard turf in both races led to career-ending injuries in his hocks, at which point he was retired from the track and sent back to the stallion paddocks of Sandringham, where his stud fee was set at 300 guineas. Persimmon continued to achieve success off the racetrack with an impressive stud career, in which he proved a champion sire on four occasions and champion broodmare sire twice. Persimmon`s most outstanding offspring was the extraordinary filly, Sceptre, who won every classic race in 1902, except the Derby. In addition, Persimmon exerted considerable influence in the pedigrees of some American classic winners during the years of World War I. Despite the hazards of trans-Atlantic shipping during the war, many first-rate breeding animals were imported from England by American breeders, including Persimmon`s daughters (Lisma, Dreamy II, and Perfect Peach) and sons (All Gold and Out of Reach), as well as his grandson Corcyra. In early January 1908, Persimmon fell and fractured his pelvis and thigh. The stallion never recovered from the injuries incurred in this accident and later died on 18 February 1908, at the relatively early age of fifteen. A life-size bronze statue by Adrian Jones has been erected in his memory at Sandringham, where it continues to inspire and influence the world of equestrian sport. Noteworthy Wins: Coventry Stakes (1895); Richmond Stakes (1895); Epsom Derby (1896); St. Leger (1896); Jockey Club Stakes (1896); Eclipse Stakes (1897); Ascot Gold Cup (1897) Awards: Leading sire in Britain and Ireland (1902, 1906, 1908, 1912); Leading broodmare sire in Britain and Ireland (1914, 1915, 1919)

He also competed at the 1924 & 1928 Games and was the first Briton to go to five Olympic Games, a record that would remain until eclipsed by fencer Bill Hoskyns in 1976. After his international aquatic career, Radmilovic ran the Imperial Hotel in Weston-super-Mare and was said to still be swimming 400m a day at the age of 78. In 1967, he was inducted in the International Swimming Hall of Fame. He was the second water polo player (after American Wallace O`Connor) and the third Briton (after coach Matthew Mann and English Channel swimmer Captain Matthew Webb to be inducted. He was one of the original ten inductees to the Welsh Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. To celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of Radmilovic`s 1908 double-gold Olympic performances in swimming and water polo, a plaque was placed on the Cardiff International Pool to honour him.
