AN ITALIAN ARMORIAL TAPESTRY 18TH CENTURY Woven with a cardinal's hat and ribbons above a central coat of arms, enclosed within a golden sculptural cartouche upheld by a winged figure and winged cupid, all set against a shaped architectural niche, with golden scrolling foliage and pendant groups of gilt-bronze trophies held by blue ribbon supported by scallop shell supports, within yellow outer banded frame border approximately 318cm by 206cm Provenance: Sotheby's London, 27th September 2012, lot 220 Condition Report: Tapestry has thick later lining. There are small areas of rewoven patches in the flowing red and blue robes in the lower right corner. There are stitches joining horizontal splits at colour changes, especially in the light areas of weave, for example to the lower centre grouping with the bruhl parfum, and to the group of motifs and wing of cherub, left of the cartouche. The metal-thread highlights to the central sculptural cartouche are tarnished, commensurate with age. Some small splits to the light band in the coat-of-arms, in the very centre, and some other horizontal splits along colour changes. Bottom edge worn and frayed- which will benefit from tidying up before hanging. Some fading from sunlight and slightly rumpled with creases. The red looks to have slightly stained. A LARGE GRAND TOUR GILT METAL MODEL OF TRAJAN'S COLUMN ITALIAN OR FRENCH, 19TH CENTURY The whole on white marble base rotating on brass pin below, straited grey marble stepped plinth 104cm high overall, the base 21cm square In the late 18th and early 19th century, the Roman craftsman Luigi Valadier and the Prussians Wilhelm Hopfgarten and Benjamin Ludwig Jollage specialised in casting and selling "desers", scaled-down reproductions of monuments from Roman antiquity intended for use as dining table centrepieces. Throughout the 19th century, other bronze foundries followed their example producing similar Grand Tour souvenirs, notably the Parisian foundry Leblanc Freres. Condition Report: Has been stored outside in a garden for a number of years, the lacquered surface has largely protected it but some wear and surface scuffs and marks to top, underside of top, dirty. The door to base looks to have previously been able to move- now stuck. Marble base weathered and some bruising around ankles. Bronze section is 84cm high and is fixed to its white marble base. Hubert Le Sueur came to London in the retinue of Charles I's bride Henrietta Maria in 1625. He was a skilled bronze founder and his portrait busts of the King derive from the armoured equestrian statue now in Trafalgar Square, which was completed by Le Sueur in 1633 for the Lord Treasurer, Sir Richard Weston. In the later eighteenth century, the sculpture was sent to Naples and today is in the collection of the Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Naples (Inv. 6022; Naples 1989, II, pp. 156-57, no. 19). Comprising a spearhead with leaf-shaped blade and raised triangular mid-rib, short tapering open socket with inside wood remains, and a forged axe with folded rectangular-section open socket and flared crescent-edge blade. Cf. Allen, S., Celtic Warrior 300 BC-AD 100, Oxford, 2001, p.51, and plates A and E, for similar specimens. 791 grams total, 11.2-22.5 cm (4 3/8 - 8 7/8 in.). The Celtic warrior used a light javelin to throw and a heavier thrusting spear at close quarters. With crescentic blade and rounded knot at the butt, ornamental curved edging to the upper shaft hole, a cord edge on the upper and lower shaft hole, incised band around the edge of the blade; the butt inversed, forming a bearded human face. Cf. Mahboubian, H., Art of Ancient Iran, copper and bronze, London, 1997, p.166, fig.172b, for identical type; Gernez, G., L’armament en métal au Proche et Moyen-Orient: des origines a 1750 av. J.C., Paris, 2007, p.146, fig.2.14, subtype H2.H.a. 246 grams, 94 mm (3 3/4 in.). The type corresponds to Gernez type H.2.H.a, axes with collar and short sleeve lined with mouldings, fan-shaped blade and rear knot. It was a variant only known in Elam and Luristan. In Luristan one identical specimen was found at Chigha Sabz (grave M7). In Elam, the majority of these axes were found in the Middle-Bronze Age (Age of Isin-Larsa or Early Babylonian Age) tombs of Sarcophagi, at Susa.with a London, UK gallery, 1971-early 2000s.

Earthenware vessel group comprising four with two opposed loop handles to the rim and two with a single thick loop handle; accompanied by an old collector's record card stating: 'Grave Group' of Pots. Late Neolithic or Early Bronze Age (4000-2000 BC). Central or S.E. Europe. Probably made for funerary use as they are too small to have been of practical value. The contents of a single grave (or at least 2-3 adjacent graves).' 8th century B.C.. A hammered discoid shield raised from a single sheet, displaying a central conoid boss; two pairs of circular piercings to the perimeter. Cf. These kind of shields, of small dimensions, were used by infantry or horse-archers of Luristan and neighbouring cultures (Elamites, Zagros Tribesmen, like Hurrians, Lullubians, Kutians, and Kassites, Assyrians), as well as by Urartu, West-Iranian and Northern Caucasian civilisations around the Caspian Sea. Modelled in the round, nude male with legs in straddling pose, left hand thrust forward and right arm raised with hand open; head exaggerated with shoulder-length hair and crested helmet. Cf. Boucher, S., Recherches sur les Bronzes Figurés de Gaule Pré-Romaine et Romaine, Rome, 1976, item 354, for type; Mackintosh, M., The Divine Horseman in the Art of the Western Roman Empire,The Open University, 1991, fig.7, bronze rider from Brigstock. 35.6 grams, 60 mm (2 3/8 in.). The pseudo-Corinthian or Apulo-Corinthian helmet, here represented on the head of the divinity, was originally a legionary helmet, then became, in the Late Consular Age, an officer's helmet, then a typical attribute of military commanders and then of the war god, Mars. These arrowheads seem to belong to the type V, subcategory types A and C according to the classification of Khorasani and Negahban. In the four categories of triangular bronze arrowheads from Luristan, Marlik and Northern Iran individuated by Negahban, subtypes A and C of type V are larger arrow heads with barbed shoulders and triangular heads. These types of arrowheads were commonly used in Anatolia and Mesopotamia from the 2nd millennium B.C., but apparently their employment began earlier in this area, where types like these occur alongside the non-barbed, predominantly ribbed and tanged types.Ex London, UK, collection, 1990s.
