A RARE PAIR OF PRESSED HORN RELIEF PORTRAITS BY JOHN OSBORN (1581/4-1634) DATED 1626 Depicting Henry, Prince of Orange, and Princess Amelia of Orange in profile- opposing each other, reverse with raised title and inscriptions 'FRED. HENRICUS. D.G. PRINCEPS AVRIACÆ COMES NASSOVIA ETC. JOH OSBORN. ANGL AMSTEROD. FECIT 1626' and 'AMALIA D.G PRINCEPS AVRIACÆ ETC 1626 JOH OSBORN ANGL AMSTEROD FECIT 1626', ebonised frames, trace of old printed label to reverse the horn panels approximately 15cm high, the frames 20cm high Provenance: Private Collection Literature: L. Forrer, Biographical dictionary of medallists; coin, gem, and seal-engravers, mint-masters, ancient and modern, with references to their works B.C. 500-A.D. 1900, London 1904. These rare portraits were made by the Worcestershire born leather, whalebone and horn craftsman John Osborn. After 20 or so years in England he emigrated to Amsterdam where he plied his trade producing tokens, medallions and portraits such as these. Given the fragile nature few seem to have survived. However a comparable pair of portraits from the same date are held in the British Museum Collections (OA-4594 & 1889-0706-1). In Forer's biography the British Museum pair are described: "The busts of Frederick Henry, Prince of Orange, and his wife Amelia seem to have been executed by John Osborn expressly for impressing horn. They are also found in bronze and lead, but both materials show traces of being cast from originals in horn, and not struck directly from the die. They are evidently the work of a practised hand, both as portraits and as examples of medallic art, and they can fairly take rank with the many grand portraits by Dutch artists of the same period." Condition Report: With wear, marks, knocks and scratches as per age, handling, use, and cleaning. Some rubbing to raised elements notably noses and eyebrows of each, natural shrinkage with some vertical lines visible notably above left of his head. Reverse with wear and chips around margins but this looks to be possibly from original handling and construction. Surface dirt throughout and quite coarse gluing into frames- he is starting to work loose form his frame and could do with regluing Please see additional images for visual references to condition which form part of this condition report. This is particularly true for garden related items. All lots are offered for sale "as viewed" and subject to the applicable Conditions of Business for Buyer's condition, which are set out in the sale catalogue and are available on request. Potential buyers should note that condition reports are matters of opinion only, they are non-exhaustive and based solely on what can be seen to the naked eye unless otherwise specified by the cataloguer. We must advise you that we are not professional restorers or conservators and we do not provide any guarantee or warranty as to a lot's condition. Accordingly, it is recommended that prospective buyers inspect lots or have their advisors do so and satisfy themselves as to condition and accuracy of description. Provenance:The property of a deceased gentleman. The current lot can be directly compared to another example signed by Dent (numbered 297) offered by Leigh Extence Fine Antique Clocks (Exeter). In his listing Extence notes that 'the movement (of number 297) is identical to others seen as signed for Henri Jacot and his working partner Louis Baveux, and includes the double-finned dial pillars, the unique layout of the under-dial work, and the style of engraving to the lettering of the signature amongst other features'. He then notes direct comparisons with Jacot number 489. Edward John Dent was a talented horologist who at the age of 17 transferred his apprenticeship from the trade of tallow chandler to watchmaking under the charge of Edward Gaudin in 1807. By 1817 he had become well known as a watch and clockmaker receiving commissions from the Admiralty for a 'Standard Astronomical Clock' and pocket chronometers for the Colonial Office Africa Expedition. In 1830 Dent went into partnership with the renowned watch and chronometer maker John Roger Arnold which continued until 1840 when he left and set up business alone as E.J. Dent at 82 Strand, London, primarily making marine chronometers, watches and precision clocks. In 1843 the firm expanded taking on a second premises at 33 Cocksur Street, with the Strand premises moving down the road to number 61 by 1851. In 1852 Edward Dent successfully tendered to make the 'great clock' to be housed in Stephen's tower at the New Palace of Westminster. The clock was completed by 1859, apparently at a financial loss to the firm, however it ensured that Dent became a household name synonymous with fine clockmaking.Unfortunately Edward John Dent did not live to see the installation of the 'great clock' as he died in 1853. He was succeeded by his stepson Frederick Rippon Dent, who, in partnership with his brother Richard, continued to expand the business. By 1862 the firm had added 34 Cockspur Street and 34 & 35 Royal Exchange to their list of addresses and, although having seen natural passage of ownership over the intervening years, the business still continues to trade today as Dent & Co. Henri Jacot is recorded by in Allix, Charles and Bonnert, Peter CARRIAGE CLOCKS, Their history and development as working from 31 Rue de Montmorency, Paris as well as possibly having a factory in Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont. The business was awarded Bronze Medals at the Paris 'Exposition' in 1855 and in London 1862; Silver in Paris 1867, 78 and 89 and Gold, again in Paris, 1890. Although Charles Allix notes that Henry Jacot senior died in 1868 and was succeeded by his nephew of the same name further research by Leigh Extence has revealed that after his death Henri's business was actually continued by his brother Julien who was essentially only 'keeping the bench warm' until his son, and Henri's nephew Albert, was able to take over and move the concern forward in 1874. The business is thought to have continued until around 1920. Condition Report: Movement is in clean working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. Although it is working a precautionary gentle clean/service is advised. Dial is free from outwardly visible faults although a very slight chip can be seen at the bottom left corner on very close examination viewing from an oblique angle. Case is in very good condition with no visible chips to the glasses and faults limited to some very slight bumps to the frame as well as some light oxidation/discolouration to the gilding.Clock is complete with a winding key. § § Ivor Roberts-Jones (British, 1916-1996), a cast bronze of Sir Winston Churchill, a maquette for the monument in Parliament Square, raised on a Portland stone plinth, inscribed ‘’Churchill’’, number 62 from an edition limited to 500, 50.8cm high (excluding the base). Literature: P. Cannon-Brookes, Ivor Roberts-Jones, London, 1983, pp. 51-59Note: In 1970 the Royal Fine Arts Commission (members included Henry Moore and John Piper) approached nine sculptors to compete for the Parliament Square Winston Churchill Monument commission. Two of these, Ivor Roberts-Jones and Oscar Nemon, were shortlisted and invited to submit revised proposals. By November 1970, the Commission had selected Roberts-Jones as the sculptor. However, Lady Churchill was determined that it shouldn't be Oscar Nemon who won the commission and due to her reservations, the Commission agreed to look at two larger maquettes by both sculptors. Kyffin Williams, a staunch supporter of Roberts-Jones, arranged a private view of Roberts-Jones' maquettes in his own studio for Lady Churchill and in 1971 he was finally announced as the chosen sculptor. The finished statue was unveiled in Parliament Square in 1973 by Lady Churchill, with a speech given by Queen Elizabeth II.The present work was cast by the Meridian Foundry from a maquette produced at the same time as the Parliament Square monumental work. Roberts-Jones retained the first 100 casts for his own clients with the remainder being offered to the subscribers of The Collected works by Winston Churchill by the Library of Imperial History, London. With its enigmatic expression and mass, the statue brilliantly portrays Churchill's grit and greatness or, in the words of a reporter for The Times, his "Bulldog resolution and defiance."
