Lot 93

A WW1 medal pair, bronze cap badge, autograph book, and period photographs, relating to 266153 Pte Ernest George Ewens of the Hertfordshire Regiment, and later the Bedfordshire Regiment. To include: the British War Medal, Victory Medal, period bronze Herts Regiment cap badge on slider, a WW1 era autograph book, containing poems, illustrations and greetings from various soldiers, and various WW1 period photographs of Pte Ewens in uniform. Notes: Pte Ewens’ medal entitlement is confirmed as being the pair only. Contemporary records would suggest that he was part of the territorial force. in the Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment. A couple of the photographs included would indicate that he was a music9na in the regiment, as in one image he is pictured holding a trumpet, and another shows him holding a bugle. Another image shows a group of drummers, but it’s uncertain whether Pte Ewens is in this image. Information supplied by the vendor states that Ernest was born in Wood Green, on November 23rd 1897. He enlisted just before his 17th birthday, in 1914, and spent 2 years serving with a Home Service (TF) unit. After attaining the required age, Ernest was sent overseas for service in France & Flanders. He joined the regimental brass band, which managed to excuse him from some of the dreary trench duties. The autograph book is named and dated November 23rd 1914, seemingly a birthday present from his parents. It contains amusing rhymes and poems, written by fellow soldiers, plus some illustrations of camps, particularly from the 30th Company Grenadier Guards. Condition: generally good. Both are in good clean condition, with a good level of detail still present. The medals are both complete with their original ribbons, but these are a little frayed. The photograph are all good, as is the cap badge. The autograph book has a couple of loose pages, but is otherwise good.

Lot 91

A WW1 Military Cross / Mentioned in Dispatches medal group, awarded to Lt W.G. Grant. To include: the Military Cross, British War Medal, and Victory Medal, the latter with Bronze oak leaf attached to the ribbon, indicating Mention in Dispatches. Notes: as is correct, the BWM and Victory Medal only carry the officer’s rank and name, not his regiment. It’s been suggested Lt W.G.Grant is a William George Grant, who served in the ranks as a Private in the 5th Scottish Rifles (using service number 6572). He later went on to serving in the 3/6 Scottish Rifles with the rank of Lieutenant (appointed from 24/05/16). In this instance he would also be entitled to the 1914 star with clasp (which is absent). A group certainly worthy of further research. The Military Cross is a genuine period example, and unnamed as it was originally issued. Each medal is complete with its original silk ribbon. Condition: very good. There is a little age related toning to the medals, and the M.C has traces of polish within the grooves of the design. The ribbons on the BWM and Victory medal have been sewn at the back and have safety pins attached to facilitate wearing.

Lot 151

A scarcely seen Irish WW1 officer’s tunic for the Prince of Wales Leinster Regiment (Royal Canadians). Complete with bronze officers collar badges on the cuffs, brass regimental buttons, and 3 embroidered rank stars to each cuff, which would indicate the rank of Captain. Brown cotton lining to the body, and an off white pin striped lining to both sleeves. Notes: the regiment had its origins in the 100th (Prince of Wales’s Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot, and the 109th Regiment of Foot (Bombay Infantry), with the 2 amalgamating in 1881 as part of the Childers reforms. The regiment recruited mostly in Central and Eastern Ireland, with its Home Depot being in Birr in County Offaly. The regiment was disbanded in 1922, with the partition of Ireland and the establishment of The Irish Free State. No apparent makers labels, officer’s name, or date to the tunic, but to the inside edge of the skirt section there is a crudely stitched word or name, but it is indecipherable. Condition: good for its age and purpose. For the most part the tunic is structurally sound, with no major holes or tears to the fabric. The right shoulder has a 1.5cm long split of the outer fabric, revealing the liner below. There are a few very small old moth holes to the right breast and sleeve area The top half of the back section also has a little moth peppering and light soiling in places. The lining is almost entirely intact, with just the seam area (where it joins the main body of the tunic) having some degradation on the fabric and stitching faults. Overall, the item displays very well.

A great rarity believed to be from Prince Bira’s Bentley. 12 copies were made during the late 1930s, all marked one to 12 with green glass eyes (the original had Emerald eyes). This example is not one of those later copies or numbered and has a clearly marked 'B. Bira' signature.  In good, original, unrestored condition with normal age patination all over the mascot and around the legs. Hollow cast chromed bronze. Sold with a copy of Princess Ceril Birabongse's book The Prince and I (which mentions it, on page 49, as being sculpted by Bira and mounted on his Bentley) plus three other books relating to Bira. It would be wonderful to establish its provenance as the 'original' but our vendor is unable to say, without doubt, that is the case. We encourage interested parties to form their own opinion. Measuring 16.5cm long. For more detail regarding this rare mascot see page 43 of Kay and Springate's Automotive Mascots book. This important mascot was sculpted by Prince Birabongse whilst staying at his mother's house near Fontainbleau. Click here for more details and images

FRENCH LOUIS XVI GILT BRONZE AND WHITE MARBLE MANTEL CLOCK BY LEPINE CIRCA 1780 the white enamel dial with black Arabic numerals and Arabic quarter markers, signed in puce ‘Lepine, A Paris’, the white marble pendule d’officer style case with beaded door with rose branch bow swag below, surmounted by a figure of winged Cupid descending on billowing clouds to greet a figure of Venus with two doves between them, mounted on a white marble inverted breakfront plinth base with acanthus moulding, the front with a classical frieze of putti, on front toupie feet flanked by two pairs of column base feet, the twin barrel movement with silk suspended pendulum and outside countwheel, striking on a bell, the backplate signed ‘Delaruelle AParis’ 32cm wide, 39cm high, 14cm deep There is a limited corpus of known Lepine clocks from the same period with a similar composition to the present clock, all featuring a pair of gilt bronze figures representing allegories of love flanking the case incorporating doves. A similar model, signed Lépine, can be seen in the collection of the Residenzmuseum, Munich, another housed in identical case can also be found at Château de Fontainebleau [See Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, “Vergoldete Bronzen”, 1986, p. 248, pl. 4.6.13]. That model also features an allegory of Cupid, this time in the guise of a putti, descending from the opposite side. The modelling and chasing of the clouds is nearly identical to the present clock and the framing of the figures around the case is similar. Another similar model, signed Lépine, resides in the Collection of the Louvre Museum, Paris, and came from the collection of Queen Marie-Antoinette [See P. Kjellberg, La pendule française du Moyen-Age au XXe siècle, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, 1997, p.251 (pendule C) et 246 (pendule A), Archives nationales O13510)]. That model represents the “Return of Love" and shows figures of a winged putti offering a dove to a young maiden arranged in a similar posture around the clock. Both of those signed Lepine examples have very similar dials to the present clock, with the style of both the Arabic numerals and the signature near identical.Jean-Antoine Lépine (1720-1814), was one of the most important Parisian clockmakers of the second part of the 18th century. He was appointed clockmaker to both King Louis XV and Louis XVI, to whom he supplied a large number of clocks to the Palais royaux. Lépine was also patronised by the French aristocracy as well as the Spanish, British and Swedish royalty. Lépine initially worked as an “ouvrier libre”, then became a master on March 13, 1762, and taking over the stock of his colleague Caron, who held the title of Horloger du Roi et du Garde-Meuble de la Couronne. Having settled in the rue Saint-Denis in 1756, the place Dauphine in 1772, the rue des Fossés Saint-Germain-l’Auxerrois in 1777, and then the rue des Vieux-Augustins during the Revolutionary period, Lépine led one of the most productive and renowned workshops of the reign of Louis XVI. He was also very aware of integrating scientific excellence with aesthetic beauty and thus only used cases by the finest bronziers such as Jean-Baptiste and Robert Osmond, Etienne Martincourt and Jean-Rémy Carangeot as well as the ébénistes Balthazar Lieutaud and Nicolas Petit and also employed the services of the gilders Noël, Martin and Henry. Lépine’s attention to detail also included the dial face, his early dials only had Arabic numerals for the hours and minutes. This was one of Lépine’s specialities, which he continued to use until about 1789 when he reverted back to the more usual combination of Roman and Arabic numerals. In the late 18th century there were two clockmakers named De La Ruelle that were active in Paris. The first being André De La Ruelle (born in 1740), was apprenticed in 1754, registered his letters of mastery on October 13, 1762 and set up his workshop on rue Saint-Martin from 1772 to 1789 (See P. Verlet, Les bronzes dorés français du XVII siècle, Paris, 1999, p. 435). The second, Nicolas De Là Ruelle, seems to have started his career at the end of the reign of Louis XV and set up his workshop successively in Enclos des Quinze-Vingt, rue Croix des Petits-Champs and rue Richelieu at the Revolution.
