Original vintage propaganda poster published to warn against the risk of pools gambling and betting: A Fool and his money - Mug's Game'. A betting pool, sports lottery, sweep, or office pool if done at work, is a form of gambling, specifically a variant of parimutuel betting influenced by lotteries, where gamblers pay a fixed price into a pool (from which taxes and a house "take" or "vig" are removed), and then make a selection on an outcome, usually related to sport. In an informal game, the vig is usually quite small or non-existent. The pool is evenly divided between those that have made the correct selection. There are no odds involved; each winner's payoff depends simply on the number of gamblers and the number of winners. (True parimutuel betting, which was historically referred to as pool betting, involves both odds calculations and variable wager amounts.) Betting pools are not connected merely to sports, as there are topics such as deaths and births which people can bet on. Death pools usually involve well-known individuals, such as celebrities and sports figures, which the participants predict will die within a certain period of time, with more points being assigned to individuals who are under the age of 80 years or appear to be in generally good health. On the other hand, birth pools involve individuals picking specific dates in which someone, who can be either a celebrity or friend, gives birth. Good condition, small tears and paper losses in margins. Country: UK, year of printing: 1940s, designer: Mays, size (cm): 49x37

Lip - An open faced pocket watch / chronograph / tachymeter, according to the inscription on the reverse, from Les 24 Heures Du Mans, circa 1950, the signed white dial, 45mm diameter, with black Arabic numerals, blued hands, subsidiary seconds register and chemin de fer chapter ring, the chronograph / tachymeter with centre sweep, subsidiary minutes register at 12 o'clock and four additional outer timing rings, unsigned mechanical crown wind movement with inner push button stopwatch control, the reverse plain and engraved 'Les 24 Heures Du Mans 1950 No 32' Other Notes: Automobiles Gordini (a division of Renault sport) entered a work's team of 6 cars in the 1950 Le Mans 24 hour endurance race, including one car driven by 5 times Formula One world champion Juan Manuel Fangio (no. 33), a record which stood for 47 years until beaten by Michael Schumacher. Fangio was considered one of the best racing drivers of all time. This stopwatch, however, was apparenty allocated to no. 32, a Simca Gordini T15S coupé driven by Fangio's teammates Frenchmen Maurice Trintgnat and Robert Manzon. Both Formula One drivers of the era, Trintgnat won Le Mans in 1954, and the Monaco Grands Prix in 1955 and 1958 during his 14 year racing career. Manzon was the new boy, and this race was his first at senior level, however he achieved overall 3rd place in the Formula One series that year and completed 29 F1 races in his short 6 year career. He died in 2015, the last surviving entrant of the 1950 F1 season. No. 32 retired after completing 34 laps due to a faulty radiator, and by the end of the 24 hours, all 6 cars in team Gordini had retired with mechanical issues. 1950 was an important year in motor racing history; what is now known as Formula 1 was launched that year with the first world championship race held at Silverstone.
Cartier - A gentleman's stainless steel 'Roadster' chronograph wristwatch, the signed tonneau shaped black dial with luminous Roman numerals and hands, centre sweep chronograph counter, three subsidiary registers and date window at 3 o'clock, the thirty seven jewel mechanical automatic ETA movement calibre 2894 - 2 , V8DJ4, movement 8510, with quickset date, case number 910595MX, diameter 43mm, to a signed steel bracelet with deployant clasp One of the most iconic men's watches from the Maison, the Roadster made its debut in 2001 and is Cartier's elegant take on the world of cars. As its name suggests, its design is heavily influenced by the sports cars of the 1950s and 1960s. An unusual feature is the lens above the date window. Its unique shape recalls a curved car windshield. Carrying on the automobile inspiration is the winding crown. Some say the crown mimics the look of a car radiator while others claim it's a tribute to wheels. The dials of the early models were clearly influenced by the speedometer of the Porsche 356 Speedster. Cartier later changed the dials to be more in line with their other watches, including a return to the use of their signature Roman numerals as in this example. Although the Roadster is no longer in production, given its bold design and instantly recognisable silhouette they are still an extremely sought after and classic timepiece.
