Featuring a small hours and minutes subdial at 12 o’clock, the rest of the dial was an unobstructed view of the chronograph function with a minute register subdial at 6 o’clock. Soon after its introduction, the Gallet Regulator became the time recording instrument of choice for pilots, doctors, technicians and sports professionals, and was the first official wrist-worn chronograph of the Indianapolis 500 races.Powered by the Venus 140, it was originally produced - as with this example - with a single pusher to start, stop and reset the timer mechanism. The second series, introduced in 1935 with an additional pusher, provided the wearer with the ability to start and pause the timer without fully resetting the timer hands back to zero.Internal company documents from 1929 show that Gallet acquired exclusive control of the calibre 140 movement from the Venus company and supplied "private-labelled" regulator watches to Rolex, Girard Perregaux, Harvard (Goerring), and other Swiss manufacturers. Some were supplied 'pre-labelled' and others - as with this example - were supplied 'sterile' to allow companies to apply their own branding.

The latter allowed the brand to produce a variety of products in a range of different colours with a metallic sheen, while still keeping the products hypoallergenic, without any metal.Their cutting edge designs, together with the use of this highly distinctive scratch resistant and durable material (similar ceramic material was used in the construction of the space shuttle) have made Rado timepieces particularly desirable.

However, flying so near the North Pole required designing new instruments to overcome the unusually strong magnetism present there. SAS developed a new flight navigation system to overcome these extreme magnetic fields and, as Universal Genève was SAS’s official supplier of watches, they were approached to develop a suitable pilot’s watch for the flights. Universal Genève appointed Gerald Genta (who would go on to design some of the industry’s most iconic watches, including Audemars Piguet’s Royal Oak and Nautilus) to design a watch to commemorate SAS’s polar flights. The watch was originally called Polarouter and was officially released in 1954 with a price tag similar to that of a Rolex Explorer. A year later, the line was renamed Polerouter, and production in many forms continued until 1969.Today, the Universal Genève Polerouter remains one of the most desired and still affordable of Genta’s designs and is much sought after by collectors.
