David K. Stone (American, 1922 - 2001) "Undampened Spirits" Signed lower left. Original Oil painting on Canvas. Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. This painting is the original painting which appeared in the Fleetwood Trails West Collection of Fine Art Prints as "Undampened Spirits" published in 1983. When Marcus Whitman returned from Oregon in 1843, tales of free land in the western "paradise" began to sweep the country. Talk of settling there became widespread with thousands of people selling their belongs and gathering in western Missouri to join in the "Great Migration" west. They came to the towns of Independence or St. Joseph, Missouri, or Council Grove, Kansas, where abundant pasture and fresh springs would sustain them as they prepared their caravans for the long, arduous journey. Not one of them knew the way to go, so they joined forces and hired a guide to take them. A captain was elected and rules were drawn up. Supplies were purchased and the wagon train would finally be ready to begin its long journey. Life on the trail was difficult, uncomfortable, and often dangerous. The travelers were constantly plagued by either dryness and dust -- or rain and mud. In her diary, Amelia Stewart Knight wrote on June 1, 1853, about the realities of pioneer travel: "The men and boys are all soaking wet and look sad and comfortless. The little ones and myself are shut up in the wagons from the rain ... take us all together we are a poor looking set, and all this for Oregon. I am thinking while I write, 'Oh, Oregon, you must be a wonderful country.' " In spite of these hardships, most of the pioneers reached their goal. By the end of the Great Migration, more than eight thousand Americans had settled in the Oregon country, spirits undampened by the hard trek west. Overall Size: 18 x 21 in. Unframed. (B07479)
