The Beta 21 movement was the result of a collaboration of 20 Swiss watch companies including Patek Philippe, Rolex and IWC and was accurate to 5 seconds per month, better than any automatic or manual wind movement of the day.It was developed at the CEH (Centre Electronique Horloger) research laboratory in Neuchâtel, and the first production models went on sale shortly after the introduction of the world's first commercial quartz wristwatch, produced by Seiko in 1969. The Beta 21 is significantly important to the history of watch making, as it marked the first quartz watch produced on an industrial level. With the other collaborative companies also producing their own version of the Beta 21, Omega's offering - this example - was named the Electroquartz. The rectangular case design was larger at the top than the bottom and so it gained the nickname 'pupitre' after the French word for writing desk. It is now a highly collectable item.

Pressing the pusher starts the timing hand, pressing again and holding stops the hand, and releasing will return the hand to the 12 o’clock position. The 145.010 is the most sought after of the 'Chronostop' series and was designed specifically for rally drivers. The dial has been moved through 90 degrees and the watch is worn under the wrist, allowing the driver to glance down at the time without having to remove the hands from the steering wheel. It was a unique attempt by Omega to completely change how a wristwatch was worn, and is now a rare and collectable item. Crystal - Complete. Registration No: WLM 725 Chassis No: S824751DN MOT: Exempt1 of just 1,368 RHD examples manufacturedBenefiting from the factory-fitted Special Equipment (SE) pack which comprised: front fog lamps, wire wheels, and twin exhaustsOffered with a Heritage Certificate and a collection of old MOTs and invoicesExtensively restored in c.2010 including a new interior and the fitment of A/CBy the time the XK150 was launched in May 1957, Jaguar had won Le Mans four times and was about to do so once again. A logical progression of the XK140, subtle changes to the bodywork gave this final iteration of the XK a distinctly more modern air. The split windscreen was replaced with a single sweep of toughened glass and the scuttle height was raised, along with the waistline. The bonnet was widened and the walnut dashboard of the XK140 was replaced by one trimmed in leather. Thinner doors gave more interior space. The standard engine was the 3.4-litre DOHC straight six unit of the XK140, which was later increased to 3.8-litres. Still more power became available from 1958 in the form of the 'S' engine. The XK150 was the first production Jaguar to be equipped with disc brakes and was initially offered in Fixed Head Coupe (FHC) and Drophead Coupe guise, the Roadster following in 1958. By the time production ended in October 1960 to make way for the E-Type, some 4,445 FHCs had been produced, of which just 1,368 were RHD examples.Manufactured on the 13th of January 1959, this home market example was supplied new via Henlys Ltd of London to a J. W. Bradstreet of Goring-On-Sea and registered ‘WLM 725’ – a registration mark it pleasingly retains today. One of just 1,368 RHD examples built, it was specified from the factory with manual transmission with overdrive and benefits from the factory-fitted Special Equipment (SE) pack which comprised: front fog lamps, wire wheels, and twin exhausts. Residing in the car friendly climate of South Africa for some 20 years, the XK150 was provided with a comprehensive restoration there in c.2010. Finished in Black with a Red interior, the Jaguar is fitted with a MkIX 3.8 engine. The extensive restoration included a new interior and the fitment of air-conditioning.Treated to a new clutch, front calliper overhaul, master cylinder reconditioning, and new fuel lines in 2019/2020, this handsome XK150 is offered with a Jaguar Daimler Trust Heritage Certificate, South Africa motor vehicle licenses, a collection of invoices, a selection of previous MOTs dating back to the 1980s and a current V5C document. Running excellently during our photography session, the vendor informs us that the XK150 drives very well with working overdrive. The vendor does note that the windscreen wiper motor does need replacement. For more information, please contact: Paul Cheetham paul.cheetham@handh.co.uk 07538 667452

Ø A FINE AND RARE WHALEBONE MODEL OF A WHALING SHIP, CIRCA 1820the 19in. hull with uninterrupted planks with copper pins, baleen sweep ports, scrimshaw-lined stern and quarter lights, marine ivory bust-length female figurehead, chainplates with marine ivory deadeyes, planked flush deck with simple details including winch with ratchet, scored hatch covers, belaying rails with pins, marine ivory capstan, carved helm with steering gear and compass box, whale tethering booms, three-section masts with standing and running rigging, bowsprit with dolphin striker and other details, loosely mounted on cradle stand to bone inlaid display base with baluster rails, contained within fine lunette glazed wooden display case, overall measurements -- 30 x 40 x 14in. (76 x 102 x 35.5cm) The Honourable Company of Master Mariners; Presented by F. E. Wilson in 1950. The planking is distinctive because only a whale can supply the length of bone needed to supply a single strake along the frames - by comparison, the more familiar models made by French prisoners of war using beef bone, have many short lengths. The other distinctive features are the two booms over the quarter lights, a feature unique to whalers as the whale carcass was too large to hoist aboard and had to be flensed whilst tethered alongside. This brought the additional advantage that unwanted fluids dispersed straight into the sea. This model also has masts made from single-turned lengths of bone, rather than being bound from a number of them, and sweep ports which are rarely seen, theoretically allowing a becalmed vessel to pursue a pod.models and base are both unsecured; rig later, several balurades loose, or re-secured, hull, fittings and mast in fine condition.

OTHER ITEMS: include his Cash Book recording his WWII period oyster sales, a 1932 Coastguard Manual, his battered 1913 copy of the Admiralty Manuel of Seamanship & a certificate of thanks to his wife Cissie from Queen Elizabeth for accommodating refugees in 1939. NOTE: Tom Brinkley was a well-know resident of Orford born on Orfordness. He served on minesweepers during WWI & was s fisherman & worked on the oyster beds between the wars. He was a long serving member of the Orford Auxiliary Coastguard. After WWII he acted as ferry man to the Orfordness Research Station. Provenance: by decent through his family to his granddaughter.  Condition report: 1. Each of the three war service medals are in very good, original condition. They appear to have been unworn. The ribbons are original, but seem to have been cut.2. The rocket apparatus medal is also in good, original condition, but the case contains only a fragment of ribbon (approx. 3cm long). The case itself is in good order and original.3. The presentation pocket watch no longer has its bow around the winder, so it cannot be hung around the watch chain. However, it winds freely and the sweep seconds hand rotates, so is in ‘going’ order. However, we do not guarantee continuous working order.4. The photographs are all in reasonable good condition, as seen in the catalogue description. Only one, the long 1952 photograph of the Research Station, has folded/creased.5. The paper ephemera, including Mr Brinkley’s Identity Card, various letters from the Paymaster General’s Office, H.M. Coastguard, Ministry of Transport, The Admiralty etc. are all in aged condition, but readable.6. Books:- The Coastguard Manual, 1932 has the ownership inscription, ‘Mr. O.E. Vincent, H.M. Coastguard, Stornaway, Isle of Lewis’ and is in fair condition.; The Cash book is annotated in pencil and is only partially used; The Manual of Seamanship, (inscribed with Mr. Brinkley’s name and address) Vol. One, 1908, is in very well-used condition. The outer spine is missing, some pages are loose, some pages annotated. 7. The provenance lies with Mr. Brinkley’s grand-daughter who lives in West Cornwall. Her mother recently dies and she inherited these items as part of her late mother’s estate. Please note that all items in this auction are previously owned & are offered on behalf of private vendors. If detail on condition is required on any lot(s)  The absence of a condition report does not imply the lot is perfect.WE CAN SHIP THIS LOT, but NOT if part of a large, multiple lots purchase.

John Gilbertson, Rippon, a quarter-striking bell-top mahogany bracket clock the six-pillar, triple-fusee movement with verge escapement and striking the hours on a bell and the quarters on three further bells, with a fully engraved backplate of floriate and rococo decoration, the eight-inch arched dial having a solid silvered centre engraved with the name John Gilbertson, Rippon and having a sweep centre date indicated by a brass hand, the raised chapter ring engraved with black Roman hour numerals and Arabic five-minute markings, with decorative blued steel hands, with floral and rococo cast brass spandrels to the four corners with further spandrels to the arch either side of the silvered strike/silent dial, the mahogany bell-top case with cast brass finials, cast brass feet, cast 'cherub-head' fretwork to the sides and with brass carrying handles above each, all surmounted by a fluted block to the top surmounted by a further brass finial with gilded wood scroll work to either side, height 63.5cm. The quality and style of this clock would indicate that Gilbertson 'bought-in' the clock from the celebrated maker John Taylor of London being near-identical in many aspects to those from his workshops. Of note is the engraved decoration to the backplate, the distinctive double line to the backplate edge, the shape of the verge apron, the shape of the hammer heads. The case has identical mounts to those seen by Taylor, including the feet, side frets and finials. The dial and engraving is fairly distinctive and near-identical used by Taylor as are the hands and spandrels. The 'John' part of the signature engraved to the dial centre is identical to the 'John' engraved on clocks by John Taylor. This clock is illustrated and described by Leigh Extence in Ripon's Clockmakers by David F. Severs, pages 54-57, published by the author 2013. John Gilbertson is recorded as working in Rippon (Ripon), Yorkshire from circa 1750 until his death in 1793. A longcase clock by him is illustrated in Clockmakers of Northern England by Brian Loomes. C.L. Reid, in North Country Clockmakers, notes that some clocks by him have the name Ripon spelt Rippon, as seen with this clock. Gilbertson was recorded as a clockmaker in the Universal British Directory of 1790-95, a list of which was published in The Yorkshire Evening Post, July 25th, 1908.
