AN IMPRESSIVE GEORGE III GILT METAL MOUNTED MUSICAL AUTOMATON CENTRE SECONDS CALENDAR TABLE CLOCK UNSIGNED, LONDON, CIRCA 1790The substantial six pillar triple fusee bell-striking movement with plates measuring 8.75 by 7.25 inches and verge escapement regulated by lenticular bob pendulum incorporating unusual vertical rack slide regulation to suspension, the musical train playing a choice of six tunes on eleven bells with eleven hammers, via a 3.5 inch long 2.5 inch diameter pinned cylinder transversely positioned to the upper left of the backplate, every three hours after the sounding of the hour bell, the backplate engraved with a delicate arrangement of symmetrical rococo scrollwork around a central small basket of flowers within a scribed-line outer border, the 8 inch arched dial with circular fired white enamel Roman numeral chapter disc with Arabic five minutes beyond the outer minute track, with pierced brass hands and blued steel arrow sweep centre-seconds hand set within a moulded bezel surround, the spandrel areas with four fired enamel subsidiary dials, FASTER/SLOWER opposing selection for six tunes HORNPIPE/SANDY OF THE LEE/HELEN MACHREE/ROBIN GRAY/MINUET/HORNPIPE to the upper quadrants, over date-of-the-month opposing STRIKE/SILENT to the lower, within polychrome floral spray decorated verdigris painted infill, beneath arch composed with a realistically painted pair of red-brick townhouses flanking an aperture revealing ten parading figures modelled as actors, musicians and acrobats passing back and forth in front of three panels of glass spinning rod 'waterfall' automata, incorporating curved niche profile to the central bay of the backdrop and set within naturalistic leafy surrounds, the apex of the arch also bordered with painted representation of gathered drapery, the gilt brass mounted ebonised case with large fire-gilt figural surmount cast and chased as Mars wearing a feather-plumed helmet, armour and a cape, stood with the three-headed Cerberus on an oval plinth flanked by two further smaller figures of Classical maidens, over repeating leaf draped capping to the bell-top superstructure applied with rams-head adorned martial trophy decorated festoon mounts and lions masks at the angles to the concave sections, raised over a repeating rosette decorated gilt brass diamond lattice sound fret frieze flanked by further figural finials cast as Mars opposing a king applied to the corners above the ogee over concave top mouldings, the opening front with leaf cast fillet moulding bordering the glazed dial aperture surmounted by mask-centred husk swag decoration and applied with a generous martial trophy mount to lower rail, flanked by lions masks issuing further pendant husks and martial trophy motifs over stags head mounts to the canted angles, the sides with generous hinged carrying handles over rosette decorated gilt diamond lattice pierced arched sound frets and martial trophy mounts to lower margins, the rear matching the front, on cavetto moulded skirt base with generous acanthus scroll cast and chased supports.88cm (34.5ins) high, 35.5cm (14ins) wide, 28cm (11ins) deep. Although unsigned, the present lot does exhibit strong similarities with examples from the workshop of Francis Perigal who is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as gaining his freedom of the Clockmakers' Company on 1781, serving as Master in 1806 and dying 1824. Most notable amongst these features are the layout of the music work (transverse barrel set to the upper left of the backplate), use of fired enamel (both for the chapter disc and the subsidiaries), provision of sweep centre seconds set between the hour and minutes hands, and extensive use of glass-rod 'waterfall' automaton. Indeed, all of these elements can be seen in an example by Perigal sold at Christies, King Street, London sale of Magnificent Clocks 15th September 2004 (lot 16). The 'vine engraving' on the backplate can be also be closely compared to that on a table clock by George Margetts illustrated in Dzik, Sunny ENGRAVING ON ENGLISH TABLE CLOCKS, Art on a Canvas of Brass 1660-1800 on page 371 (Figure 20.4). Amongst the tunes is 'Auld Robin Gray' which is a Scottish ballad written by Lady Anne Lindsay in 1772; 'Sandy o'er the Lee' is also noted as 'Mr Baird's Favourite Reel' in Niel Gow's A Second Collection of Strathspey Reels of 1788. The extensive use of Martial motifs within the mounts of the present clock would suggest that it was originally supplied to a client with strong military connections; possibly for a regimental institutional or perhaps a wealthy member of the military class. A FINE FRENCH CHAMPLEVE ENAMELLED GILT BAMBOO CASED CENTRE-SECONDS REPEATING ALARM CARRIAGE CLOCKUNSIGNED, PARIS, LATE 19th CENTURYThe two train eight-day gong striking movement with silvered platform lever escapement regulated by sprung bimetallic balance, the inside of the frontplate indistinctly stamped with number 559 to lower margin, the backplate with alarm mechanism with hammer sounding on the hour gong to upper left corner and stamped with number 11355 to lower left, the circular gilt Roman numeral dial with blued steel hands incorporating sweep centre seconds, set within rectangular champleve enamelled mask polychrome decorated in the Japonesque style with floral blooms and leafy trails into a turquoise blue ground and incorporating gilt Arabic alarm setting dial to lower margin, the bevel-gazed case with frame modelled to resemble sections of bamboo overlapping at the corners and with each segment champlevé enamelled with further polychrome floral sprays into a turquoise blue ground ground, with conforming hinged carrying handle to the gilt panel-glazed top, pin-hinged glazed door to rear and on angled bamboo feet. 16.5cm (6.5ins) high with handle down, 11cm (4.25ins) wide, 9.5cm (3.75ins) deep. French carriage clocks in bamboo cases which feature enamelled decoration to the frame itself are particularly notable in their rarity. A centre-seconds clock (but with plain white enamel dial), with closely related enamel decoration to the frame of the current lot, is illustrated in Roberts, Derek CARRIAGE and Other Travelling Clocks on page 202 (Figure 12.9). Another very similar clock to the present example, but with cream ground to the enamel and no centre seconds, was sold in these rooms FINE CLOCKS, BAROMETERS & SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS 2nd October 2019 (lot 129) for £2,400 hammer. Condition Report: The movement is fully operational and appears complete with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. The strike train sounds correctly and the alarm mechanism will wind, set and release as it should. The movement is generally a little discoloured hence a gentle clean/service is advised. The dial is in good condition with no visible damage, the black of the numerals however have been re-touched. The case is in good original condition although there is a general degree of light bruising and some touching-in to the turquoise ground enamel of the frame most notably to the handle, front rail and left hand upright (as well as other areas to a lesser degree). There is a chip revealing the brass beneath to the front lower rail towards the left corner (images available on request). The front glass has a noticeable chip to the upper left corner and both the bottom corners have slight chips. The top glass also has a slight corner chip; otherwise the side and rear glasses appear free from visible chips (the left hand side glass may be a replacement). The gilding to the case is in fine condition and overall the clock presents well.Clock does not have a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

A FRENCH ENGRAVED GILT CENTRE-SECONDS REPEATING ALARM CARRIAGE CLOCK MADE FOR THE CHINESE MARKETATTRIBUTED TO CHARLES JOSEPH, PARIS, FOR RETAIL BY L. VRARD AND COMPANY, SHANGHAI, CIRCA 1890The eight-day two train bell striking movement with silvered platform lever escapement regulated by sprung balance, the inside of the frontplate stamped 688, 2478 to lower right-hand corner and the backplate applied with external visible strikework, the alarm mechanism set between the plates to the bottom left and sounding on a second bell mounted within the base of the case, the backplate also stamped with number 689 to the lower left opposing Chinese characters to the right, the rectangular white enamel Roman numeral dial signed L. VIRARD & Co., SHANGHAI, HANKOW to centre, with blued steel moon hands and sweep centre seconds over Arabic numeral alarm setting dial to lower margin, the gilt bevel-glazed gilt brass cannelee case with hinged faceted baton carrying handle over oval top glass set within floral spray spandrel engraved matted surround incorporating repeat button to front edge, with wavy floral trail engraved channel-moulded uprights and the rear with glazed pin-hinged door, on ogee moulded skirt base finely engraved with further symmetrical foliate trails into a matted ground; with original maroon velvet covered protective outer travelling case. The clock 16cm (6.25ins) high with handle down, 9.5cm (3.75ins) wide, 8,5cm (3.375ins) deep. An essentially identical carriage clock to the present lot is listed by Leigh Extence (stock ref. 1014 for £3,500), with the description indicating that the movement carries the trademark for the roulant blanc maker 'C, Joseph'. Extence notes records of a Charles Joseph being born in 1738 and dying in 1804; who was also known to have been in Shaghai in 1784. This maker was probably a predecessor (father perhaps) of the maker of the movement of the clock listed by Extence (and most likely that of the present lot). A Charles P.H. Joseph is recorded in Tardy DICTIONNAIRE DES HORLOGERS FRANCAIS as subsequently working in Paris 1852-1935. Extence adds that he worked from Rue Amelot 114, Paris, and showed clocks at the 1889 and 1900 Paris Exhibitions.  The velvet covering for the travelling case if the present lot was apparently preferred for clocks destined for the Chinese market. The current case is notable in that it has survived in good condition with the original velvet intact. Condition Report: Movement is in relatively clean fully working condition with no visible evidence of alteration or noticeable replacements. A gentle clean and lubrication however is probably advisable if intending to put into daily service. The dial is in fine condition being free from visible cracks and chips and faults apparently limited to a couple of tiny surface scratches; the hands a appear original and undamaged. The dial is in very good condition with faults apparently limited to very small corner chips to two of the rear door glass; the gilding is near immaculate. The travelling case is in very good original condition with some scuffing/bruising to the upper edges red silk-lined interior from the clock being inserted over the years. The exterior has overall slight fading and edge wear but is generally very good considering the age and the nature of the covering. The strap handle is intact but some of the stitching to the velvet covering has degraded causing it to open out as well as having a short tear.Clock is complete with a winding key. Condition Report Disclaimer

A rare Second War ‘Coastal Command - Film Production Unit’ Boston Pilot’s D.F.C., ‘Malta’ Blenheim Pilot’s D.F.M. group of seven awarded to Flying Officer R. E. Gillman, Royal Air Force, who served as Officer Commanding the R.A.F.’s Film Production Unit in 1944, and later, as Chief Training Captain, British European Airways Corporation, was awarded the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air Distinguished Flying Cross, G.VI.R., reverse officially dated 1944; Distinguished Flying Medal, G.VI.R. (1260024 Sgt. R. E. Gillman. R.A.F.); 1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star, 1 clasp, France and Germany; Africa Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, mounted for wear, good very fine (7) £6,000-£8,000 --- D.F.C. London Gazette 10 October 1944. The original Recommendation states: ‘During June, July and August 1944, F/O Gillman, of the Film Production Unit of the Directorate of Public Relations, while temporarily attached to Coastal Command, carried out a number of operations in company with Beaufighters of Nos. 16 and 19 Groups. On several of these sorties he flew a Boston I aircraft, armed only with two Vickers guns and with no self-sealing fuel tanks, against heavily defended enemy convoys and also carried out a number of reconnaissance sorties un-escorted in search of enemy U-Boats, which had previously been attacked by Coastal Command aircraft. F/O Gillman's crew consisted of one Wireless Operator/Air Gunner and two cameramen. Consequently, F/O Gillman had to do his own D.R. navigation although his aircraft was equipped with no modern navigational aids. The extreme endurance of the aircraft was less than four hours and on nearly every occasion he landed with only 15/20 minutes petrol left. On several sorties unique films were obtained by the cameramen thanks largely to the skill with which F/O Gillman presented them with targets in spite of the danger from flak. At all times, both on the ground and in the air, he showed himself outstandingly keen, capable and persevering. These films certainly would not have been obtained without his patience and persistence in waiting until the right opportunity presented itself and then pressing in despite opposition from the enemy.’ D.F.M. London Gazette 2 December 1941: ‘In November, 1941, this airman participated in a shipping sweep over the Ionian Sea. Two merchant vessels escorted by a destroyer were observed and, despite intense fire from all 3 vessels, 1 of them was attacked at mast height. Sergeant Gillman pressed home his attack and, although his aircraft was hit several times by shell-fire, he scored 2 direct hits on the ship which caught fire and became enveloped in thick black smoke. This airman displayed great courage and determination throughout the attack.’ The original Recommendation, for an Immediate award, gives some additional details: ‘On 17th November 1941 in company with six other Blenheims on a shipping sweep over the lonian Sea, the formation sighted two merchant vessels escorted by a destroyer. During the run-up at mast height to attack one of the merchant vessels, there was intense fire from the merchant vessels, also from the destroyer. In spite of the opposition, Sergeant Gillman pressed home his attack and though his aircraft was hit several times, he scored two direct hits. The ship shortly afterwards was enveloped in thick black smoke which rose to a great height. Last seen, the ship was on fire with a pall of smoke to 2,000 feet. As a result of this courageous action one ship is claimed as seriously damaged and probably sunk.’ Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air London Gazette 2 June 1962: Captain Ronald Edward Gillman, D.F.C., D.F.M., Senior Training Captain, British European Airways Corporation. Ronald Edward Gillman was born at Thornton Heath, Surrey, on 31 January 1921 and joined the Royal Air force in November 1940. Posted to 17 Operational Training Unit (Blenheims) at Upwood in May 1941, he received his first operational posting to 114 Squadron in July 1941, based at R.A.F. West Roynham. His first operational sortie, as Pilot of Blenheim Mk IV 2224, was attacking a convoy off the French coast on 8 September 1941; a week later he attacked a convoy off the Frisian Islands, scoring a direct hit on a 5,000 ton merchant vessel. Posted to 107 Squadron, based at R.A.F. Luqa, Malta, at the beginning of November 1941, Gillman took part in the attack on a convoy in the Mediterranean on 8 November, attacking and sinking a 3,000 ton merchant vessel, with his aircraft being hit by machine gun fire. On 17 November he attacked a convoy consisting of one Destroyer and two Merchant Vessels; he claimed three direct hits on one of the merchant vessels, which subsequently sunk, and for the leader of the attack he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal. Further operational sorties that year included an attack on Tripoli harbour on 19 December, during which he encountered fighter opposition and intense flak. Gillman subsequently chronicled his wartime experiences as a Blenheim pilot in Malta in his book ‘The Shiphunters’; reviewed by Group Captain Leonard Cheshire, V.C., Cheshire wrote: ‘It takes one almost into the aircradft itself and enables one to appreciate in remarkable detail what their crews must have experienced. An utterly convincing book, written in a vivid, gripping style.’ Posted to No. 13 Operational Training Unit, R.A.F. Bicester, as a Blenheim Instructor in April 1942, Gillman was commissioned Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve on 3 February 1943, before being posted to the Royal Air Force’s No. 1. Film Production Unit, based at R.A.F. Benson, on 3 March 1944. The R.A.F’s Film Production Unit had been established in August 1941, No. 1 F.P.U. being the H.Q. unit based at Pinewood Studios, from whence emerged No. 2 F.P.U. to cover operations in the Middle East, No. 3 F.P.U. to cover the Far East and, finally, in April 1944, No. 4 F.P.U. to cover the Normandy landings and operations in North-West Europe. Given that part of their brief was to accompany aircraft on operations, the cameramen shared fully in the risks undertaken by regular aircrew, with 13 R.A.F. P.R.U. cameramen to losing their lives, in addition to others who were taken Prisoner of War. By the War’s end the R.A.F’s cameramen had shot over 1,640,000 feet of newsreels; much of that footage today survives in the collection of the Imperial War Museum. Temporarily attached to Coastal Command, Gillman’s first operational sortie with this unit, flying a Boston 1 aircraft armed only with two Vickers guns, was an attack on enemy destroyers off Ilse de Bas with 404 and 114 Squadrons on 9 June 1944; further operational sorties included ‘filming convoy attack off Frisian Islands’ on 6 July 1944, during which ‘2 Beaus shot down. Flak intense’; ‘Shipping in Les Sables d’Olonne’ on 8 August 1944, ‘Flak intense and accurate. 1 Beau lost’; ‘Operations Den Helder’ on 23 September 1944, ‘Gasometer set afire. Radio station beaten up’; and ‘Operations Den Helder’ on 25 September 1944, ‘Flak intense. 5 aircraft lost.’ For his services as with the Film Production Unit, Gillman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Advanced Flying Officer on 23 December 1944, Gillman relinquished his commission in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve following the cessation of hostilities, and subsequently took up employment with British European Airways Corporation. Ultimately serving as B.E.A.’s Chief Training Captain, he was awarded a Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air. He subsequently chronicled his ...

The well-documented Zeebrugge Raid group of seven awarded to Major F. K. Donovan, Royal Engineers, late Royal Naval Air Service, who was wounded whilst manning the ‘flamethrower hut’ on Vindictive’s navigation bridge during the famous raid of April 1918; he subsequently participated in the raid’s V.C. ballot, became Chairman of the Zeebrugge Association, and was was taken P.O.W. in North Africa in 1943 British War and Victory Medals (F. 19971 F. K. Donovan. A.M. 1 R.N.A.S.); 1939-45 Star; Africa Star; France and Germany Star; Defence and War Medals 1939-45, good very fine or better (7) £2,600-£3,000 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, March 2005. Francis Kenelm Donovan was born at Bow, London on 31 July 1897 and was a science student prior to joining the Royal Naval Air Service as an Air Mechanic 2 in August 1916. As a result of his earlier studies, he was selected for experimental work in developing flares, flamethrowers and smoke-screens, the whole with a view to future employment in the famous Zeebrugge raid of April 1918, an operation for which he volunteered for, and was accepted. So it was that he found himself manning the ‘flamethrower hut’ on the end of H.M.S. Vindictive’s navigation bridge, his role being to sweep the Mole with flames prior to the landing parties going ashore. In the event, his position was so badly riddled with shot and shell that none of the main flamethrower equipment could be used in anger. He did, however, try and get ashore with a portable flamethrower, but as he ran up the gangway a bullet took away the nozzle, rendering it useless, and as a result he came ashore armed only with a ‘rather blunt cutlass’, where, in any case, he was promptly wounded by shrapnel in the right arm. He was well enough, however, shortly afterwards, to walk Vindictive’s deck during her voyage home, where he recalled seeing ‘the awful mess of splintered steel, bloodany, oil, and shattered bodies’. He was around, too, to participate in ‘the ballot for the award of a Victoria Cross for operations against Zeebrugge and Ostend on the night of 22-23 April 1918’; his service papers refer. Between the wars, Donovan served as Chairman of the Zeebrugge Association, and on the renewal of hostilities he was commissioned into the Royal Engineers. A Major by the time of his capture at Thala, Tunisia on 21 February 1943, he was liberated by elements of 7th U.S. Armoured Division in March 1945. He subsequently joined the Staff of Brigadier R. G. Mountain, D.S.O., M.C., and was employed at the Displaced Persons Centre, Lollar, Landkreis Giessen. Donovan retired to Australia. Sold with a large quantity of original documentation and photographs, including the recipient’s R.N. Certificate of Service, complete with endorsements for his Zeebrugge wound and subsequent participation in the V.C. ballot; assorted ‘Ruines de Zeebrugge’ picture postcards; an original typescript for a radio show entitled “Scrapbook for 1918”, in which Donovan participated in episode 4, duly annotated in his own hand, and the cover signed by fellow participants; letters from Admiral Keyes (dated 15 May 1935), and Lady Keyes (dated 9 April 1946), this last of a somewhat controversial nature in respect of the vacancy for the Presidency of the Association; copies of his application for the France and Germany Star, and other 1939-45 period papers, including some pencilled notes made while a P.O.W.; related Identity Discs (3), including metalled example from Oflag IXA, and a gilt and enamel Zeebrugge Association Chairman’s lapel badge; original card forwarding box for WW2 medals addressed to Flemington, Victoria, Austrakia; a good deal of material appertaining to the Zeebrugge Association, including a dozen or so reunion photographs and correspondence between Donovan and other members right up until the early 1970s, and also a quantity reunion dinner menus, mainly of the 1950s, and all signed by numerous veterans of the raid, including V.C. recipients.

The poignant Second War D.S.M. group of seven awarded to Chief Petty Officer S. H. ‘Sam’ Dixon, Royal Navy, for his gallantry in H.M. submarine Splendid; one of those lucky to survive her loss in April 1943 when 18 of his shipmates succumbed to shellfire in the water, he was himself killed when Allied aircraft strafed a P.O.W. transport train in April 1945 Distinguished Service Medal, G.VI.R. Pembroke.) mounted as worn, the last largely officially re-impressed, nearly extremely fine (7) £2,000-£2,400 --- Importation Duty This lot is subject to importation duty of 5% on the hammer price unless exported outside the UK --- --- Provenance: Dix Noonan Webb, July 2003. D.S.M. London Gazette 6 April 1943: ‘For bravery in successful submarine patrols.’ The original recommendation states: ‘For consistent zeal and devotion to duty during three successful patrols in which two enemy destroyers, three merchant ships totalling 10,000 tons, two A./S. schooners and one A./S. trawler were sunk. During these patrols ten torpedo attacks have been carried out, five of which were on screened targets. He displayed particular coolness and skill in firing a salvo of torpedoes shortly after depth charges had been dropped during an attack on a convoy.’ Samuel Hughes Dixon was born in Chesterton, Staffordshire, on 4 October 1910, and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in December 1925. Having then seen service in assorted surface vessels before the war, including operations off Palestine, he was advanced to Petty Officer in the cruiser H.M.S. Dragon in August 1939. In February 1942, however, he transferred to the ‘Silent Service’, passing his D.S.E.A. course that February and being rated as a Petty Officer Torpedo Gunner’s Mate. His initial postings were to the L. 26 and H. 50, but in October 1942 he joined a newly built ‘S’ class submarine, the P. 228, afterwards named Splendid. Splendid’s first destination was Gibraltar, where she joined the 8th Submarine Flotilla under the command of Lieutenant I. McGeoch, R.N. (afterwards Vice-Admiral Sir Ian McGeogh, K.C.B., D.S.O., D.S.C., who later published a full account of Splendid’s wartime career in An Affair of Chances, in which he pays tribute to the likes of Dixon. Splendid’s wartime career was certainly an eventful one, her opening five war patrols accounting for more tanker and supply ship tonnage than any other submarine for the period November 1942 to April 1943. The total tonnage of six escorted supply ships, including two tankers, sunk by torpedo, was 26,424, and one ship of 3576 tons by gunfire, notwithstanding the two Italian destroyers and A./S. ships sunk or damaged, as per Dixon’s recommendation. One of these destroyers was the Aviere, sunk off Bizerta on 17 December 1942. And throughout these operations, Dixon, a vital member of Splendid’s team, remained, in the words of his Captain, a ‘calm and utterly reliable torpedo expert ... one of the finest men I was privileged to be shipmates with ... I certainly recommended him for a decoration ... he richly deserved it.’ Splendid met her end in the course of her sixth patrol on 21 April 1943. McGeogh had been summoned to the control room as hydrophone effect noises had been heard, and a quick look through the periscope revealed an enemy destroyer. An attack sequence was immediately started but the enemy destroyer was on Splendid before any torpedoes could be fired. Her attack was prolonged and accurate and McGeogh took the submarine down to 300 feet to avoid the depth charges but to no avail. The enemy’s final attack caused massive damage to the submarine, leaving it suspended in the water at 500 feet, with her stern down by an angle of 20 degrees or more. The only available option was to blow the main ballast, and after an agonising wait Splendid moved towards the surface, accelerating at the end as she leapt out of the water to lie helpless on the surface. McGeogh gave the order to abandon ship, all 48 crew getting out of the submarine, but the enemy destroyer, now about a mile away, continued to engage with her main and secondary armaments and 18 men were killed. Splendid had a jammed rudder and her one remaining motor had driven her round in a wide sweep, suggesting to the enemy that she was getting into position for an attack. Dixon and his captain were among those who were afterwards picked up by the enemy destroyer, a ship that transpired to be the ex-Greek Navy, British-built Hermes, but now, of course, crewed by Germans. A full account of this incident, and of Splendid’s wartime patrols, may be found in McGeogh’s An Affair of Chances, published by the Imperial War Museum in 1991; apart from several references to Dixon, the book contains a photograph of her crew at Algiers, taken in February 1943. Dixon, who was originally held as a P.O.W. in Italy but later transferred to Stalag VIII at Gorlitz, was killed in a strafing attack on a transport train by Allied Mustangs near Halberstadt on 19 February 1945. He left a widow in Folkestone and is buried in the Berlin War Cemetery. Note: As verified by his certificate of service, his Royal Navy L.S. & G.C. medal was issued posthumously in July 1951, hence it being a G.VI.R. 2nd issue, and officially re-impressed from an un-issued medal.
