(a lot). See illustration It appears the designs for this salt are based upon another by Omar Ramsden made some six years previously which bears the inscription `The Gift of Lothian Demain Nicholson?1922`. Designs for this are currently in the Goldsmiths and Silversmith`s Archives. A photo of the original completed salt is included within this lot. There are minor differences in the banded decoration, columns and shaping between this design and the one now being sold. The correspondence included in this lot indicates that this design is a replacement for the Nicholson original but with the addition of a cover, further order details and sketches of which also appear in the Goldsmiths and Silversmiths Archives. One letter included in this lot on Ramsden`s St. Dunstan`s headed paper describes the salt: `You may win the Calcutta Sweep and decide to spend a few thousands on a piece of plate but you will never get a piece of more exquisite line, form and workmanship than this salt`.
