[BADER DOUGLAS]: (1910-1982) British World War II Ace (22.5 victories), recognised for his important role during the Battle of Britain. On 9th August 1941 Bader, flying a Spitfire, participated in an offensive patrol over the French coast with other members of 616 Squadron. During the sweep Bader became separated from his section and had a mid-air collision with a German Messerschmidt which resulted in the Ace having to make a dramatic escape, and when he baled out he lost his prosthetic leg. Bader was subsequently made a prisoner of war. Selection of signed printed images of various sizes (10.5 x 8.5 and smaller), evidently neatly removed from books or magazines (most multiple signed), A.L.S. (1), T.L.S. (1), by various members of 616 Squadron who accompanied Bader on his unfortunate flight in August 1941, including Johnnie Johnson, Hugh Dundas, Lionel ´Buck´ Casson, Whaley Heppell (A.L.S. referring in part to the flight of 9th August 1941, ´I am sure that Sgt. Jeff West flew with us that day, he was awarded the DFM in Sept. 1941 when Johnnie J & I got our first DFC´), Jeffrey West (T.L.S., referring in part to his fellow pilots, ´Those Chaps were outstanding and I consider myself very lucky to have been associated with them.....I regret my inability to add any names or addresses of 616 Squadron pilots airborne on that August 1941 Sweep. I do not think there were any more survivors. The casualty rate was quite high when we were trying to wrest air superiority over the sky in northern Europe´). One of the images depicts an artist´s impression of Bader´s Spitfire descending from the skies and is individually signed by Johnnie Johnson, Hugh Dundas, Kenneth Holden, Lionel ´Buck´ Casson, Whaley Heppell (poor example) and Jeffrey West, also featuring a facsimile signature of Bader.
