A good inlaid mahogany eight-day longcase clock, with moonphase and centre seconds, circa 1830, the four-pillar rack and bell striking movement with deadbeat escapement and 15 inch cream painted break-arch Roman numeral dial signed 'Nicholas, Birmingham' and with sweep calendar hand to centre, the spandrels figural painted with classical maidens representing the Four Seasons beneath arch with moonphase, the substantial case with fleur de lys and conch shell oval cartouche inlay to the swan neck pediment over reeded Corinthian pilasters to hood and parquetry decoration to throat, the trunk with Gothic triple arch topped door flanked by Corinthian pilasters to angles, on oval panel inlaid plinth base with rosette decorated corners and canted reeded angles, feet and centre seconds hand lacking, 231cm high. Probably Caleb Nicholas, recorded in Loomes, Brian 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World Vol.2' as working in Birmingham 1787-1842.
