Europe. Neumon (Maurice), La Guerre est l'industrie Nationale de la Prusse, published P. J. Gallais, Paris, 1917, colour lithograph map, old folds, laid on modern linen, 605 x 775 mm An unusual map using the popular conceit of the 'Russian Octopus' using its tentacles to envelope its European neighbours, but on this occasion the octopus is German and the tentacles sweep across Europe with historical dates marking earlier acts of German aggression. The message is reinforced by a caricature of a brutal looking German soldier holding a smoking rifle with the bayonet attached and wearing a Pickelhaube. (1)
