Louis Ward (1913 - 2005) - x2 pieces of detailed, mixed media, original paintings by Bristol artist Louis Ward, believed to have been created for an unissued series of cigarette cards in the mid 20th century. Featuring two illustrations of Asian proverbs, 'The winter is past, but the face of the charcoal - burner is as black as ever', and 'Sweep the snow from your own door before worrying about the frost on your neighbours tiles'. A GEORGE III MAHOGANY SERPENTINE COMMODE IN THE MANNER OF HENRY HILL OF MARLBOROUGH, CIRCA 1770 85cm high, 115cm wide, 63cm deep Condition Report: Overall there are some scratches, marks, knocks, cracks and abrasions consistent with age and use.There are some losses, restorations and observations including:The top has two indented lines corresponding to the sectional construction joints of the top under the veneers.There are some patched veneer replacements.There are some fine splits including to the sides.Some knocks to the ebony stringing along the edge of the front corners.There is some evidence of old worm.The keyholes are brass lined and of unusual shape, one is damaged, it is unclear if these are later. The locks and handles are later. There are no keys.The top drawer has a groove for sliding writing surface, now missing and there are signs of previous divisions for recesses. The top drawer now lined with sticky backed plastic.Some oak drawer linings with splitting and some tape and some grooves were the drawer base has run low on it's runners.
