The ancient Norman monastery on Mont St. Michel provides the majestic backdrop as a group of Me109s race across the coast returning to their forward base in northern France after a fighter sweep across the English Channel in early 1941. During the spring of 1941 almost all of the great Luftwaffe fighter leaders duelled across the English Channel on a daily basis with RAF Fighter Command. But the Abbey of Mont St Michel has seen it all before built by the Normans on a solid rock of granite rising 250 feet out of the sea, this ancient monastery has witnessed conflict over almost a thousand years. It now plays backdrop to Robert Taylor’s iconic painting. This superb piece completely sold out soon after release and is now highly desirable on the secondary market. The Homecoming WW2 multiple signed WW2 Robert Taylor print. 34 x 24 inches. Numbered 33/600. ‘The Homecoming’ remains one of Robert Taylor’s most dramatic and creative pieces, capturing, as it does, a moving scene in 1942. A small group of stubby-nosed Fw190s from III./JG2, en-route to their home base to the north-east of Brest, have caught sight of a small group of U-boats from the Kriegsmarine’s 9th Submarine Flotilla returning to port. As they are at the end of their coastal sweep, the JG2 pilots decide to welcome the U-boats home and give the submariners a suitable fly-past salute. For the tired crews this was a moving ‘homecoming’ to the U-boat crews after such an arduous spell out in the North Atlantic. The Signatures For collectors with an interest in U-boats, acquiring the original signatures of U-boat captains is a difficult one, especially of those with a Knight’s Cross to their name! With the average life expectancy of a U-boat crew member of just a few weeks, U-boat commanders who survived the war were a rarity, especially in 1999 when this beautiful piece was published. The fact that three such men signed the edition published of this remarkable painting is just one of the reasons why the piece met with such great critical acclaim at the time. It is also why pristine copies are in so much demand today. First there was Siegfried Koitschka who first served under the legendary Erich Topp on U-552 before taking command himself. As captain of U-616 from 1942 to 1944 he undertook nine patrols lasting 204 days. Then there was Heinrich Schroeteler who commanded U-667 on four patrols into the North Atlantic and, at the end of the war, was captain of U-1023. And, finally, Helmut Witte, commander of U-159 who, on four patrols from 1941 to 1943, sank nearly 120,000 tons of Allied shipping. And if these three commanders were not enough of an attraction, three top Fw190 Aces also signed the prints. circa 1975, model 12, the black dial, 35mm diameter, with oversized signature, luminous batons, white luminous hour and minute hands, orange chronograph centre sweep and two subsidiary dials with orange hands, date window at 6 o'clock and outer tachymetre bezel, the unsigned 17 jewel crown wind manual movement by Valjoux, number 7734, with pushers above and below the crown, the PVD coated stainless steel case, 40mm diameter, with screw down back, presented lacking its strapFootnote: The rare model 12 was produced in the mid to late 1970s at a time of great upheaval and turmoil for the company. There is little information available about the '12', having been overshadowed by the Montreal and Pasadena models, and they do not appear to have been sold in great numbers. The model 12 does however appear in the late 1970's catalogues, although without a photograph, and the original strap was not metal, but rubber, with what was described as a 'links effect'. The Valjoux 7734 movement was one of the most respected chronograph movements of the day, and was used by other watch houses, including Breitling and Tudor. It operates at a slightly slower VBH (vibrations per hour) than modern automatic movements resulting in a pleasing 'tick tick' sound reminiscent of vintage watches. The movement and crown are unsigned, which is correct and proper for this model.
circa 1943, type Bo UK1, version 5, the unsigned black dial, 55mm diameter, with cream coloured hands, dot minute track with Arabic numerals at 12, 3 and 9, subsidiary minute register and chronograph centre sweep, rotating bezel with seconds/minute track, the crown wind mechanical movement, calibre J 30 BZ, with crown located at 6 o'clock and brass chronograph stop/start/reset button below, hand setting lever at 5 o'clock, the black case with grey coloured bayonet fitting back cover, stamped on the copper plate to the reverse ‘698217’ and presented with a simple aftermarket wood and metal desk standFootnote: The Bo-Uk-FI 23885 Blindfluguhr (blind-flight or instrumental flight) clock was used in the Messerschmitt ME BF 109 and specifically designed for low visibility flight. Although simple in appearance, it provided the pilot will all the necessary information for flying in more challenging conditions. The flight time was registered at take off by selecting the hour with the rotating bezel. The chronograph or timer had multiple uses, including use for the approach to land with no visibility, calculating airspeed and keeping track on fuel usage. The minute register records up to 15 minutes, the approximate amount of flying time left after the 'low fuel' warning lamp illuminates. This clock was an essential piece of kit for the pilots, who were instructed to remove it if they had time after an emergency landing, before leaving the wreckage. During the time the Me109 was in production, 5 models of this clock were used, some with brass bezels, others with bakelite. Fully wound, the Bo UK 1 has power for 36 hours.
