An Early 18th Century Brass 10-Inch Dial Single Handed Striking Lantern Clock, signed J Windmills, London, circa 1705, 10-inch square brass dial with a Roman chapter ring signed, single hand, winged cherub spandrels, four posted lantern form movement with an anchor escapement and outside countwheel striking on a top mounted bell, (alarm work missing)40cm highDial is discoloured, dial plate with staining marks, hand with staining marks, later added top chariot mount and later added urn finials, movement with small signs of rust marks to the iron work, bell supporting columns look later added and the hand above the bell looks later, side door panels are missing, (alarm work is missing), this clock would originally had a central alarm disc to the dial which is now missing, no pendulum and no weights.
Postman's alarm clock, double-weight driven, enamelled dial, diameter 28cm.Condition report:The rear chain and weight doesn't have any resistance (the weight would just pull the chain through and drop out). The strike doesn't appear to be working. The hands drag on each other slightly. Dial is clean. The wooden moulded casing is marked and scuffed near 'VII'

The mechanism is button winding and does not require a key
Charles Joseph, Paris for Vrard & Co., Shanghai, an engraved French Cannalée carriage clock, the eight-day duration movement having a platform lever escapement and striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with the strike-work set on the movement backplate, with subsidiary alarm sounding on a bell set within the base, engraved to the backplate with the Chinese lettering, the inside of the plates stamped with the trademark Ch. Joseph, Paris, and numbered 689, 2473, the white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, blued-steel moon hands, a sweep seconds hand, subsidiary alarm dial and signed L. Vrard & Co., Shanghai, Hankrow, the Cannalée case with engraved floral decoration, height 17.5cm/15cm, handle up/down, with travelling box.Biography Charles P.H. Joseph, Rue Amelot 114, Paris, is recorded as showing carriage clocks at the Paris Exhibition of 1889 and 1900, where he was awarded a Gold Medal. Tardy gives him working dates from 1852 until 1935. It is known he worked as the horologist at the Paris Observatory.Charles Joseph, Paris (1738 - 1804), his father, travelled to Canton, China in 1784 and presumably set up trading links which were then carried on by his son.Notes: Alfred Chapuis, Laupe & de Sauisserie, p.31.
Stephen Wilmshurst, Basingstoke, an oak longcase clock the thirty-hour iron and brass birdcage movement striking the hours on a bell with an outside countwheel and with alarm work, the ten-inch square brass dial having a single hand with the raised chapter ring engraved with Roman numerals and makers name Stephen Wilmshurst, Basingstoke, with engraved decoration to the centre and alarm setting disc, with cast c-scroll corner spandrels, the flat-top oak case having wood pillars to the hood, height 190cm.Notes: Stephen Wilmshurst is recorded as working in Basingstoke from before 1784 with his father, also Stephen, recorded as working from circa 1746.Reference: Directory of Hampshire Clockmakers Martin Norgate, Pub.
