An interesting late 17th century weight driven 30 hour clock with short verge pendulum and 8 inch dialRichard Savage, Londini fecitThe square brass dial with winged cherubs head spandrels framing the Roman chapter ring with fleur de lyse half-hour markers and inner quarter hour track to a finely matted centre with Arabic alarm setting disc (the numerals accentuated by the addition of red wax) and single pierced steel hand, signed either side of VI Rich Savage Londini fecit. The weight driven movement with top and bottom plates united by gently tapering columns terminating in turned finials, the verge escapement with pendulum terminating in a brass bob with turned decoration set within the frame, countwheel striking the hours via a steel hammer on a large bell mounted above, with decorative terminal to the hammer stop, (alarm work previously positioned on the backplate but now lacking). The dial 20cms (8ins) wide.Footnotes:Brian Loomes in Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World lists Savage as working in Wenlock Magna from 1692 to 1696. He worked in Shrewsbury from 1698 and he died in 1728. It is quite possible that from 1696 to 1698 Savage made a move to London. The current clock bears several similarities to his other recorded clocks, in particular, the contrate wheel has decorative line turning and the contrate collet is cup-shaped. A rare first half of the 17th century first period 'potato head' lantern clock with rare half-hour strikeUnsigned Surmounted by four squat urn finials above turned Doric columns on inverted acorn feet. The narrow chapter ring with single line border, slender Roman hours, fleur de lys half-hour markers and an inner quarter hour track set on a dial plate with floral engraved corners and an inner ring of six flowerheads, the one directly below XII further engraved with a so-called 'potato head'. The movement now with a pendulum-driven verge escapement, the striking train unusually with passing strike on the half hour via a small hammer, and full strike on the hour via a larger hammer; the hour hammer with tapering steel upright spring with fettled foot.(Evidence of the original balance wheel escapement still visible on the top plate. Bell strap, bell, frets, doors, pendulum, weights, alarm-disc and alarm work now lacking). 32cms (12.5ins) highFootnotes:The passing half-hour strike system employed in the current lot may well be unique, to the best of our knowledge no other such system has been recorded. The two different strikes are both activated by the twelve-point star wheel on the back of the hour wheel - the hour strike is set off in the usual manner, but thirty minutes later, the same tooth runs against the tapered tail of the half-hour hammer and activates it on passing. The large return spring for the half hour hammer is secured by it's foot which is friction fitted and hammered over into the front bar. The front bar is furthermore of note in having an increased width around the great wheel pivot point, a practise sometimes used by Ahasuerus Fromanteel. The 'ring of roses' dial design was popular in the First Period of London production. The additional human face depicted in the uppermost flowerhead was used by a smaller group of makers including William Bowyer, Henry Stevens and John Cattle, but other unsigned examples are also known. The going and striking trains are wound alternately by winding the fixed key first in one direction and then the other. This avoids the need for a separate key and also enables both winding functions to take place at once. For a full discussion, see Alix and Bonnert, Carriage Clocks, their History and Development, pp.219-221, they state that 'examples with bottom-winding seem without exception to have been prior to the year 1900. Perhaps significantly, the 57 New Bond St. address, with or without the Palais Royal, will usually if not always be found on bottom-winding clocks.'

Thomas Broderick, Kirton, (Lincolnshire) An 18th-century 30-hour long case alarm clock with a single piece brass broken arch dial fitted with a single black iron hand and central alarm dial, housed in a narrow stripped pine case, 17.5 cm wide at the dial, 31 cm wide x 22 cm deep x 192 cm overall height.Thomas Broderick is recorded as working between the 1750s and 1770. A private estate The case and movement will need some work to make good but the movement seems intact and comes with a pendulum, and single iron weight.

A LATE REGENCY EBONISED AND BRASS LINE-INLAID CHAMFER TOP SMALL MANTEL TIMEPIECE WITH ALARM AND LATER BRACKETBy Ogston and Bell, Davies Street, London, circa 1815The case with a stepped chamfer top, above a glazed door flanked by brass-inlaid canted angles, the sides each with a gilt metal-outlined glazed rectangular panel, on a moulded base and acorn feet; the 3 1/2in arched silvered dial, signed, with blued steel 'Breguet' hands and a brass alarm setting hand, the chain fusée movement with signed backplate, alarm train striking on a bell, anchor escapement, with pendulum locking block; together with an associated reproduction wall bracket en suite (2)The clock 25cm highCONDITION REPORTThe case has lost some of its ebonising and the fruitwood shows through in places.  Some veneers are ‘dry’ and cracked; two pieces of veneer from below the dial are loose.  There is a filled hole to the left side of the case.  The key holes are rather worn with wear.  Some joints have opened up with a small crack, due again to dryness.  Right-hand side glass panel is loose.  The case will require some sympathetic restoration.   Movement will require a clean and service.  The bracket is a recent reproduction.  One broken winding key and a case key. There is only one winding hole which is not worn.

Entertainer clock - lacquer on the outer case worn, no tears or rips to the dial, untested.
