MORRISON, James Douglas ('Jim'; 1943-1971). The Lords. Notes on Vision. [No place: by Western Lithographers for the author,] 1969. 2° (280 x 215mm). On 82 leaves of ivory paper (a little colour from the folder faintly transferred on small areas of some page edges). Loose as issued in the original blue card portfolio with red tie, upper side lettered in gilt (extremities rubbed, light soiling, trace of adhesive where flaps were once sealed). FIRST EDITION OF THE DOORS LEADER'S RARE FIRST BOOK. 1 of only 100 copies, self-published by Morrison. The Lords gathers aphorisms and observations which Morrison began collecting in notebooks while studying film at UCLA. It is a poetic commentary on contemporary social structure, which Morrison saw divided between 'lords' and 'sheep'. Morrison remarked: 'what that book is about is the powerlessness that people have in the face of reality... they have no real control over events or their own lives. Something is controlling them'; whereas 'the lords are a romantic race of people who have found a way to control their environment and their lives. They are somehow different from other people' (in Sugerman, The Doors, p.188). View on Christie's.com

The Beggar’s Benison (or Bennison) was a Scottish Society of an erotic and convivial nature composed of the nobility and gentry of Anstruther and surrounding districts. The club was formally founded in 1739, original founders including Philip Paton (merchant comptroller of the customs at Kirkcaldy), Robert Hunter (customs clerk) and John McNachtane (customs officer at Anstruther). The recipient of this diploma is most likely the book collector George Paton (1721-1807). He spent most of his life as a customs clerk but built up an extensive library which took its origins in the bookseller’s stock of his father John Paton, a prominent Edinburgh bookseller and George Mosman, his maternal grandfather. Most of Paton’s books were sold by auction in 1809 and his manuscripts at a sale in 1811. The most substantial holdings of his correspondence are held in the National Library of Scotland. (1)
