Jarlath Daly (Ireland b.1956) Liam (Billy) Whelan (1935-1958) Bronze, 2007. Liam Whelan was one of Ireland's greatest soccer players. In September 1957, Liam Whelan scored twice in a European Cup tie for Manchester United against Shamrock Rovers at Dalymount Park, just up the road from where he grew up in Dublin. Less than five months later, he died along with seven team-mates in the Munich Air Disaster. one of the eight Manchester United players who died in the tragedy when aged just 22.
