A Fiji tapa cloth, 1940 or earlier, with dedication to John Miller on his 60th birthday, height 134 x 42.5cm. Original letter was placed inside the rear of the frame. Tapa cloth, made from the bark of trees and traditionally used by many Pacific Island cultures, is often prized for its intricate patterns and symbolic meaning. This particular piece was purchased in Fiji in 1940, during a pivotal time in history, as World War II was underway. It was gifted to Cornish artist John Miller on his 60th birthday by Tommy and Tean Craske-Rising, a couple with a fascinating history of their own. Tommy was a former headteacher at Penzance Boys Grammar School, and the couple shared a personal connection with Miller, who was a beloved artist in Cornwall. The provenance of the cloth adds to its mystique, as the accompanying letter conveys an extraordinary tale of survival and gratitude. The letter recounts the journey the cloth made during the Second World War, from Fiji across the Pacific Ocean and then through the Atlantic, following the perilous convoy journey where Tommy and Tean were miraculously spared from the convoy being wiped out. The letter reflects the belief that the cloth carried some sort of protective magic, preserving the lives of those who carried it. The Tapa cloth’s journey, with the letter conveying this story, becomes a precious artifact of not just artistic and cultural value, but also of historical importance, especially with the tie-in to wartime survival and the bond it represents between the artist and the Craske-Rising family. This gift, imbued with the luck and wishes of the couple, stands as a meaningful gesture for John Miller and continues to serve as a reminder of the intertwined histories and experiences of the people who gifted and received it.
