KANSAS CITY BOMBERLife Magazine One-Sheet (26.75" x 40.25")Fine+ on Linen MGM, 1972On the June 2, 1972 issue, Life Magazine featured the fetching Raquel Welch as the cover girl to which MGM decided to release this unique special poster as a promotional tie-in for the film Kansas City Bomber. This poster on linen has had some touch-up work done to the fold lines, especially the upper vertical and horizontal lines. Plus, there is some light smudging in the top right, the right side edge, and the lower right edge. Other than some scattered creases, the poster is very clean.Centering around the then-popular 70s league sports entertainment Roller Games, iconic actress Raquel Welch plays a tough single mother and kick-ass roller derby queen. The film was a continuation of strong female performances by Welch and also marks one of the earliest film appearances of Jodie Foster. This lot will be auctioned on Friday, December 8th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 7th.
MAN OF THE WORLDFull Bleed One-Sheet, (26.25" x 40")Fine+ on Linen Paramount, 1931This is the only extant copy of this poster that we are aware of. It is a glowing image of Carole Lombard and William Powell. Interestingly, the source image for the artwork depicts Lombard with a cigarette in her hand and Powell is lighting with a match emitting the glow. The artist decided to omit the cigarette.Prior to restoration, this poster had previous issues including light crimping, chipping, and fold and cross-fold wear. There have also been sporadic touch-ups including to the P in Powell, the area under Powell's tie and fold lines, plus there has been painting to the black background in the upper left. Now on linen, the poster displays very well.William Powell stars in this romantic drama as a caddish novelist based in Paris, France, who is blackmailing the uncle of a young American woman (Carole Lombard) and whose dark intentions extend to starting a relationship with her when she arrives in the city. This is a fantastic portrait of Carole Lombard and William Powell from their first onscreen team-up. In real life, Lombard and Powell would soon become husband and wife. This lot will be auctioned on Thursday, December 7th. The auction will begin at 9:30am PST and lots are sold sequentially via live auctioneer; tune in to the live streaming broadcast on auction day to follow the pace. Note other lots in the auction may close on December 8th.
SIMLA [now SHIMLA], INDIA - J. G. BRYNING (artist). An album on c.27 leaves of original watercolour studies of Auckland House School, Simla, India, and various landscapes and maritime scenes, small oblong 4to, late 19th-century.SIMLA [now SHIMLA], INDIA - J. G. BRYNING (dates unknown, artist). An album on c.27 leaves of original watercolour studies mainly of Auckland House School, Simla, India, including one captioned, "Young ladies! Please keep to step & turn your toes out", with various landscapes and maritime scenes, and a few other unrelated subjects, including Windsor Castle, contained in a contemporary cloth wallet with silk tie, small oblong 4to (125 x 160mm), mid-19th-century. Simla (as it was previously known) was, from 1864, the summer capital of the British Raj, owing to its temperate climate, and as reflected in its preponderance of colonial architecture. Auckland House School was founded by George Eden (Lord Auckland), the Governor General of India, in 1836, as a place to educate girls on English public school lines. Having gone through various different incarnations, it became, and remains, one of the most prestigious schools in India, earning itself the title "The Cheltenham Ladies College of India." Of J. G. Bryning, the artist of these charming, if somewhat amateurish, watercolours, little is known except that he probably taught art at the school. Many engravings, dating from the middle part of the 19th-century, were made of his Indian views.
A CIRCA 1902 WALES RUGBY UNION TRIAL JERSEY MATCH-WORN BY CHARLES MEYRICK PRITCHARD (1882-1916)Narrow hooped maroon jersey with white collars, four buttons, interior label for J C Stewart, Edinburgh, inside collar inscribed with C M PRITCHARDPreserved with other important jerseys, caps and photographs by Charles Meyrick Pritchard (1882 – 1916) which form a collection entered to this auction by Charlie Pritchard’s great-grandson. In recent years the collection has been archived and exhibited at the World Rugby Museum at Twickenham Stadium. The jersey was awarded to Pritchard at his first Welsh Seniors Trial Match in Treherbert, in 1902, when he was selected for 'the possibles'. Pritchard was later selected as the third forward reserve for Wales against Ireland in Belfast, in March 1904. Fortuitously for Pritchard, the first two forwards pulled-out of the tie, then on the day of the match, another was taken ill, consequently Pritchard was awarded his first full Welsh cap against Ireland at the age of 21. The match was said to be a thrilling affair, with Ireland looked to be beaten with fifteen minutes to go, but the home team scored two quick tries and a conversion to take the lead to 14-12. Controversy followed when the Scottish referee Mr Findlay Crawford disallowed a last gasp match-winning try by Welshman Dick Jones. Crawford, it is said, was the only person on the pitch or in the crowd to see a forward pass in the movement towards the try-line. Allegedly Crawford, sharing a common attitude with many Scots in rugby circles, was not in favour of the Welsh team being populated by working-class players, and that the team lacked ‘properly educated gentlemen’.
A c.1910 ENGLAND INTERNATIONAL RUGBY UNION MATCH-WORN JERSEY VERSUS WALESAll white jersey applied with felt square bearing embroidered rose-stem, interior label for George Lewin, London, three buttonsPreserved with other important jerseys and caps by Charles Meyrick Pritchard (1882 – 1916) which form a collection entered to this auction by Charlie Pritchard’s great-grandson. In recent years the collection has been archived and exhibited at the World Rugby Museum at Twickenham Stadium. It is unknown, but perhaps likely that the jersey was swapped with Pritchard after his final cap for Wales against England in 1910 at the newly opened Twickenham ground. As Pritchard was by this time a collector of match souvenirs, he would surely have wanted something to take home from this match. The first decade of the twentieth century was a difficult period for English rugby. The professional Northern Union had drawn talent away from union as had military campaigns in South Africa and China. Scotland and Wales dominated the Home Nations Championship, while England lacked continuity and a distinctive playing style. Between 1899 and 1909, a hefty 71 new England caps were awarded and with as many as 16 different half-backs to face Wales being a clear indication of their instability. They were soundly beaten 15-0 by the touring All Blacks in 1905, they also underestimated the raw Australians in 1909 losing the match 9-3. They did however manage to scrape a draw against the Springboks on home-soil, in 1906.However, the 1910 England v Wales match, Charlie Pritchard’s final Wales appearance was to be the turning-point in England’s fortunes. The match was notable as the first international tie to be played at the Twickenham ground. Buoyed by the game’s founding nation finally having a home-ground of their own, England beat Wales 11-6 – Wales’s first loss in three years. England went on to claim the Championship in 1910 for the first time since 1895. The England team also had a new crop of talented players to grace their new Twickenham home such as Adrian Stoop, Cherry Pilman and Ronald Poulton Palmer to name but a few. It was a new confident dawn for England and the mark of a golden era for English rugby union.Their first title for eleven years coincided with the rise of Harlequin F.C., whose brand of attacking rugby led to a purple period in the years leading up to First World War. England did not retain the title in 1911, winning and losing two games. England only lost one game (to Scotland) in the 1912 Five Nations, and thus shared that championship with Ireland. A Grand Slam of the Five Nations was achieved by England in 1913 and England successfully defended the title at the 1914 Five Nations with another Grand Slam. There were no games between 1914 and 1920 owing to the War, but when the Five Nations resumed in 1921 England continued where they left off.
Samuel Palmer (London 1805-1881 Redhill)Portrait of George Richmond signed and dated 'S.Palmer 1831' (lower left)graphite on wove paper stamped with the blind stamp of Dobbs, London21.8 x 17.3cm (8 9/16 x 6 13/16in).Footnotes:ProvenanceWith Katharine House Gallery, Marlborough, where acquired in 2006 by the present private ownerSamuel Palmer was living at Shoreham in Kent between 1826 and 1835 where this portrait of his close friend George Richmond would have been drawn on one of the latter's visits to stay with him. They had met through their mutual friend John Linnell who also introduced them to William Blake, a formative influence in the artistic group they were to create with Frederick Calvert, Frederick Tatham and others which became known as the Ancients. Their visionary paintings ran counter-current to the mainstream artistic style of the day and drew much from the Italian primitives. Palmer embraced the sentiments of the group in his personal life as well, wearing his hair long, growing a beard and adopting flowing, 'archaic' clothing. In contrast Richmond, whose career as a fashionable portraitist was gaining ground in London, is shown in Palmer's portrait dressed in the high collar, silk tie and tailored coat of the day, the same attire we see in his self-portrait miniature of 1830 now in the National Portrait Gallery, London (no. 6586). The identification of the present portrait was first put forward by Raymond Lister presumably with that miniature in mind, and it serves as a record both of a friendship and of a particularly productive period in the life of both artists. Richmond was the son of a miniature painter and showed precocious talent which won him a place at the RA schools at the age of 15. He made a number of trips to stay with Palmer at Shoreham in the later 1820s and they formed a close and enduring friendship. He fell in love with Julia Tatham, but having failed to get her father's approval to marry the two eloped to Gretna Green and married the year the present portrait was taken. Later in the 1830s Palmer married Hannah Linnell, John Linnell's daughter and the Palmers and Richmonds travelled to Italy together on a two year painting tour. Although the Ancients disbanded and the artists' painting styles took different directions, Palmer and Richmond remained close friends for life. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com
