Attributed to Sir Henry Raeburn RA PRSA (1756-1823) Portrait of Master William Erskine (B. 1805) of Kinnedder, Fife, oil on canvas, 74cm by 62cm Provenance:Mr Alfred Cave, London Christie's for appraisal 2 June 1955 Sotheby's, British Paintings 1500-1850, 13 November 1996, Lot 66 (£3450) Private English Collection. William Erskine was the eldest son of William Erskine, Lord Kinnedder (1768-1822) who was a close friend and confident of Sir Walter Scott - both Lord Kinnedder and Sir Walter Scott were painted by Sir Henry RaeburnIn fully restored condition relined, cleaned and re-varnished, the surface is somewhat flattened from the process and the paint is thin in places particularly within the background of the left hand side. Repair/ over painting to top right hand corner, approximately 5cm by 6cm with consistent re-touching and in-filling throughout the entire background of the right hand side to a lesser extent on the left hand side. The gentlemen's face, neck tie and lapel has had the old widely spaced cracquelure in-filled, some of this re-touching is discoloured and the varnish is collecting within the cracks which has become visible with the naked eye. There are two further patches within the fold of his waistcoat which have been over painted with further finer relatively consistent re-touching within the garment. Otherwise in sound order.

Order of the Nile, 4th Class, by Lattes, Cairo, silver, silver gilt and enamel with rosette, with case of issue, light contact marks but generally very fine and better, mounted for wearing, together with dress miniature awards, riband bars, WWII group comprising 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star, France & Germany Star and War Medal with M.I.D. oakleaf, various original paperwork including Bestowal documents for awards; License to wear the Order of the Nile signed in ink by George V; Commission certificate dated 10 July 1919; several newspaper cuttings detailing Disbandment of South Persia Rifles, Army Honours etc; three monochrome photographs of the recipient in uniform including a fine image with native troops; a fret cut photograph laid on to wood of the recipient wearing his medals, a Etiopia Italiana badge plus another; a 4th King's African Rifles swagger stick; a large and heavy silver Antediluvian Order of the Buffaloes medal with three silver-gilt bars for Royal Eastern Lodge, reverse engraved to George Pritchard and dated June 21 1898, in case of issue with name embossed on lid and finally a Buffaloes tie pin with 9ct gold pin and silver head with red stone eyes M.I.D. London Gazette 17.6.1921 'for valuable and distinguished services rendered in connection with minor Military Operations within the Indian Empire (or in territories adjacent thereto) during the period May , 1919, to April, 1920'. O.B.E. - London Gazette 21.6.1921. Order of the Nile - London Gazette 3.8.1934. Captain Leslie Everingham Pritchard served during the Great War with the Veterinary Corps, commissioned Lieutenant 24.7.1916, Captain 10.7.1919 continued his service post war a newspaper cutting details the Disbandment of South Persia Rifles and the retention by the Persian Government of 700 men in the vicinity of Shiraz one of which was Pritchard. (a small carton)

A prestigious landscape-style, 36 pp., cord-tied brochure circa 1912, promoting the 15hp, 30hp, 38.4hp, 59.9hp, commercial vehicles, colonial models, component parts, factory scenes, etc., there are colour profiles of the body-styles, with silk-tissue interleaves, decorative vignettes, detailed editorial with full specifications and prices, the decorative cream cover possesses its original cord tie, albeit with light soiling lower and upper edges, with some creasing to the upper right corner, the first tissue sheet with a gentle crease, and several pages a little rubbed, otherwise sound (1)

A circa 1922, 32 pp. cord-tied brochure discussing the 40/50hp six-cylinder motor carriages, with five full-colour pages of different body styles and descriptions, detailed text with many monochrome images of both components and cars in use, prices and images of the works, the embossed cover retains its original cord tie, with creasing on the lower and upper fore-edge, some foxing to the title page, otherwise clean (1)
*W. O. Bentley, a two-dimensional depiction, a fascinating free-standing caricature created, it is understood, by a Bentley mechanic, in celebration of Bentley at the Le Mans 24hours in 1929, the aluminium has been cut into an outline of W.O. Bentley with etched decoration creating details of a tail coat, trousers, hand holding a cigarette, spectacles and a tie, around the lower middle are the words 'Le Mans 1929' tapped out with what appears to be a pointed punch, there are two mounting holes at the base, and clear tell-tale marks of nuts and bolts having once fixed the 'mascot' to a vehicle (1)

MANUSCRIPT OF A PRIZE MONEY COMPLAINT TO BARON ERSKINE OF RESTORMEL CASTLE, ENGLISH CIRCA 1815, from the descendants of the owners of four privateers who captured in the years 1745-47 a treasure of bullion. The bullion, later made into bars, was sold at a value of £200,000 and was confiscated and deposited in the Bank of England, 15 leaves, 23-29 lines, top left-hand corners pierced and secured with a silk tie, last leaf defective, folio -- 13.5 x 8.5in. (34.5 x 21.5cm)
