Provenienz:Privatbesitz, Deutschland.Die leuchtenden Reflexe des bewegten Wassers sind das eigentliche Thema vieler Werke des Impressionismus. Kein anderes Sujet offenbart sich den Malern so flirrend-lebendig wie der bewegte Strom eines Flusses oder die mal sacht, mal heftig wogenden Wellen des Meeres, die zu jeder Tageszeit das Licht des Himmels und die Farben der Umgebung reflektieren. Malerisch ideal gelegen zwischen Fluss und Wald, zog das südlich von Paris gelegene Samois-sur-Seine im 19. Jahrhundert einige impressionistische Maler an, die am Ufer des Flusses Kraft und Inspiration schöpften. Armand Guillaumin besuchte das Dorf mehrmals und schuf hier etwa ein Dutzend Werke, bevorzugt in den Morgenstunden. Wie seine Kollegen Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro oder Paul Signac war auch Guillaumin fasziniert vom Spiel des Lichts auf dem Wasser. Für seine Gemälde stellte der Künstler seine Staffelei am Ufer der Seine entlang eines mit Pappeln gesäumten Weges auf. Der ideale Ort, um das wechselnde Licht des Himmels in der Ile-de-France auf der Wasseroberfläche einzufangen. Mehrfach wiederholt er hier das nahezu gleiche Motiv, wie es typisch ist für das serielle, an Stimmungen interessierte Arbeiten der Impressionisten: Vom Betrachterstandpunkt aus blickt man von der Mitte des Flusses rechts auf eine kleine Häusergruppe und links auf Buschwerk und Bäume. Guillaumin setzt lockere Pinselstriche auf eine helle Grundierung und legt darüber sanfte Rosa-, Violett- und Blautöne neben leuchtende Nuancen von Blau und Grün und einigen Tupfen von Rot. Seine Aufmerksamkeit gilt dem Kontrast der Farben, deren starker Einsatz anfangs Kritik erfuhr, Guillaumin aber später zu einem Anreger des Fauvismus machte. Seine Malerei gilt als innovativ und richtungsweisend für die Entwicklung der modernen Malerei. In ruhiger Stimmung liegt der Strand im kühlen blauen Schatten, während Sonnenstrahlen die ins Meer hineinragende Felsformation in warmes, goldenes Licht tauchen. Die See ist ruhig; die Felsen reflektieren recht deutlich in der Wasseroberfläche.Deutlichkeit ist im Zusammenhang mit dieser kleinen Landschaft allerdings ein irriger Begriff. Die Farbe flirrt und vibriert. Es gibt keine festen Konturen, Linien oder dreidimensionale Modellierungen. Und doch hat der Maler es verstanden den Ort und seine Stimmung eindeutig zu vermitteln.Théo van Rysselberghe war 35 Jahre alt, als er dieses stimmungsvolle "Porträt" des kleinen Strandes bei St. Tropez malte und er hatte seine spezielle Ausdrucksform, den Pointillismus, seit etwa zehn Jahren vervollkommnet.Der im belgischen Gent geborene van Rysselberghe war zunächst in seiner Heimatstadt, ab 1879 an der Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brüssel ausgebildet worden. Nach ersten Teilnahmen an öffentlichen Salon-Ausstellungen in Gent und Brüssel konnte der junge Künstler 1882/83 große Erfolge feiern, als er nach einem längeren Marokko-Aufenthalt seine Reiseeindrücke in Ausstellungen präsentierte. Es war die erste von drei Marokko-Reisen, bei der der junge Künstler bereits die Faszination des Lichts des Südens spürte. Licht darzustellen, wurde seine große Herausforderung und das zentrale Thema, dem er sich von nun an widmete.Als sich 1883 in der "Société des Vingt" (kurz "Les XX") in Brüssel 20 Künstler als Gruppe organisierten, war van Rysselberghe einer von ihnen. Das Interesse dieser Vereinigung junger avantgardistischer Künstler lag in einem Austausch mit internationalen, vornehmlich französischen Kollegen. Unter den Mitgliedern waren u.a. James Ensor, Ferdinand Khnopff oder Félicien Rops. Zu jährlichen Ausstellungen der "Vingtistes" wurden 20 internationale Künstler eingeladen, um der belgischen Kunst neue Impulse zu verleihen, aber sicher auch um die belgischen Künstler international zu vernetzen. Auch dank dieses progressiven Konzepts wurde Brüssel zu einem Zentrum der modernen Kunst im ausgehenden 19. Jahrhundert.1886 stellten Auguste Renoir und Claude Monet bei "Les XX" aus. Théo van Rysselberghe war tief beeindruckt von ihrer speziellen, neuartigen Darstellung des Lichts und sein eigener, bislang eher realistischer Stil wurde zunehmend impressionistisch.Van Rysselberghe, der bereits gut in der Pariser Kunstszene bekannt war, war eine treibende Kraft der "XX" und wurde zum "Talentscout" der Gruppe in Frankreich. Er "entdeckte" Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec ebenso wie seinen eigenen Mitschüler aus Akademie-Zeiten Vincent van Gogh, der auf der Ausstellung der Gruppe 1890 seinen einzigen öffentlichen Verkauf zu Lebzeiten abschließen konnte.Den nachhaltigsten Einfluss auf van Rysselberghes eigenes Werk hatte aber seine Auseinandersetzung mit der neuartigen, pointilistischen Malerei George Seurats und Paul Signacs, die er 1886 in Paris kennenlernte. Beide konnte er auch für eine Teilnahme an der Ausstellung der "XX" in Brüssel gewinnen.Stellten die Impressionisten die atmosphärische Darstellung des Lichts in den Mittelpunkt ihres Kunststrebens, gingen die Pointillisten diesen Weg radikal naturwissenschaftlich an. In Punkten auf die Leinwand getupfte Farben wurden nicht miteinander vermischt, sondern standen nebeneinander. Im Auge des Betrachters sollte das Bild entstehen, das der Maler nach optischen Gesetzmäßigkeiten aufbaute. Die Anordnung der Farbwerte im Spektralkreis und die Verstärkung der Komplementär-Kontraste regelten ihre Kunst, Handschrift und Pinselduktus traten zurück.Van Rysselberghe war der einflussreichste belgische Maler, der diese neue Technik ab etwa 1888 vorwiegend anwandte. Allerdings modifizierte er die strenge Lehre des Pointillismus, arbeitete mit tonalen Farbwerten und - wie im Beispiel der vorliegenden Landschaft - mit kurzen Pinselstrichen. Diese Striche konnten (hier bei den Meereswellen oder im Übergang zwischen Felsen und Wasser) durchaus auch länger und in abweichender Intensität aufgetragen werden, als die "reine Lehre" des Pointillismus dies vorsah.Im Jahr vor dem Entstehen des vorliegenden Gemäldes "Petite plage á  St. Tropez" hat van Rysselberghe dasselbe Motiv in geringfügig kleinerem Format schon einmal gemalt. In unserer späteren Arbeit hat der Künstler die Komplementärfarben um eine Nuance verschoben: von Violett-Gelb im älteren Gemälde hin zu einem Blau-Orange Kontrast. Außerdem hat er dem Himmel in der vorliegenden Arbeit mehr Raum gegeben. Diese jüngere Version wirkt kontrastreicher und vermittelt eine intensive Frische. 1910 zog Théo van Rysselberghe, der seit 1898 dauerhaft in Paris gelebt hatte, für den Rest seines Lebens an die Côte d 'Azur.Hier fand er das Licht des Südens, das er in dieser kleinen Landschaft schon so stimmungsvoll eingefangen hat. Gerahmt (123 x 93,5 cm), dort mit Metalletikett "Mützner 1910".Frühes Gemälde des rumänischen Malers jüdischer Herkunft Samuel Mützner (1884-1959, auch bekannt als Samys Mützner). Von 1899 bis 1900 studierte er an der Bukarester Kunstschule bei Eugen Voinescu, Wladimir Hegel und George Demetrescu Mirea und anschließend drei Jahre lang an der Königlich Bayerischen Akademie der Künste in München bei Karl Raupp, Anton Azbe und Simon Hollósy. 1903 geht Samuel Mützner nach Paris und studiert an der Académie Julian bei Paul Laurens und 1910 an der Neuen Akademie für Malerei (Academie Nouvelle de Peinture) in Algier. Beeinflusst von seinem Lehrer Claude Monet, bei dem er zwischen 1908 und 1910 lebte, malt er in dieser Zeit Landschaften in pointillistischer Manier. Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch das vorliegende Werk. - Neu auf Keilrahmen gespannt, dabei wurde der rechte Bildrand seitlich mit umgespannt. - Etwas Krakelee, Ränder durch die Rahmung etwas berieben, sonst gut erhalten. After graduating in law at the University of Lyon in France in 1910, Naghi studied art at the Academy of Florence until 1914. This classical European training in Italy and his elite background (as he was born to a well-connected family), along with political developments in Egypt, shaped much of his art and fashioned his role as a diplomat and cultural educator. His works combine ancient Egyptian influences with his characteristically delicate style.Naghi had a tendency towards Impressionist art and its use of colour. While he was living in France following the First World War, he became acquainted with the work of Claude Monet, which he adapted to capture his native scenes in Egypt. Following the 1919 Egyptian revolution, his work turned towards using ancient Egyptian iconography and creating art based on folklore and Egyptian cultural heritage. Naghi's works combined ancient Egyptian influences with his delicate characteristic style, creating a 'neo-pharonic style', which reformulated ancient Egyptian imagery using Western formulas of representation.Throughout the interwar years, Naghi served as a diplomat and cultural attaché for Egypt, traveling to Rio de Janeiro, Paris, Prague, Adis Ababa, Rome, and most notably Ethiopia. While in Ethiopia in the early 1930s, he produced his most prolific body of work, known as his 'Abyssinian period', which featured figurative paintings of daily life in an expressive style using bright, warm colours. Naghi served as the head of the School of Fine Arts in Cairo from 1937 to 1939, where he was the first Egyptian to lead the school since its inception in 1908. While there, he introduced the study of ancient Egyptian art into the school's curriculum. In 1939, he became director of the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, a post which he held until 1947 when he was appointed to the Egyptian Academy in Rome. He served as an Egyptian cultural attaché to Italy until 1950. In 1952, Naghi established and directed the Cairo Atelier art gallery. In 1955, Naghi went to Cyprus to paint Archbishop Makarios III (subject of the present lot), leader of the island's revolution against the British colonial establishment. Naghi finished his career in Cairo, where he set up his villa studio near the Pyramids, where he lived until his death in 1956.

In the present work, painted on the Day of Pardon, the children spill out from the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Trémalo in Pont-Aven. Their fervent motion and youthful vitality is matched by the artist's lively Impressionistic brushwork and shimmering spectrum of colour and light. This chapel was also where Paul Gauguin painted his 1889 work Le Christ jaune, considered to be a key work of Symbolism and Cloisonnism, wherein the artist incorporated the design of the chapel's wooden polychrome crucifix.
