Zahlreiche Bildnisse von ihm schuf Johann Heinrich Christian Franke, wobei das bekannteste wohl die Darstellung sein dürfte, in dem der König mit der rechten Hand den Hut zieht. Unser im Vergleich dazu deutlich repräsentativer angelegtes Dreiviertelportrait steht diesem Werk Frankes im Hinblick auf die Gesichtszüge des bereits älteren Königs nahe und dürfte im Umkreis des Künstlers entstanden sein. Die Komposition der Figur vor dem Landschaftshintergrund findet sich dagegen bereits in ganzfigurigen Bildnissen des noch deutlich jüngeren Königs bei Antoine Pesne und geht letztlich auf den von Hyazinthe Rigaud geprägten Typus des Feldherrenporträts zurück.Unser Gemälde zeigt Friedrich den Großen in Dreiviertelfigur in einem eleganten dunkelblauen, silberbestickten Gehrock mit dem charakteristischen Dreispitz sowie dem Band und Stern des Schwarzen Adlerordens. In der erhobenen rechten Hand hält er den Kommandostab und weist befehlend auf das in den Landschaftshintergrund eingefügte Schlachtfeld. Links des Königs finden sich ein hermelingesäumter, mit der Königskrone bestickter Mantel und ein lorbeerumrankter Prunkhelm als Hinweise auf seinen fürstlichen und militärischen Rang.
