* DAVID HOCKNEY OM CH RA (BRITISH b. 1937),PICTURE OF A STILL LIFE THAT HAS AN ELABORATE SILVER FRAME lithograph on paper, numbered artist's proofimage size 77cm x 57cm, overall size 92cm x 72cmMounted, framed and under glass.Note: from A Hollywood Collection, 1962.Note 2: An accomplished painter, printmaker, photographer, and stage designer, David Hockney began showcasing his talent as a draftsman while studying at his hometown's Bradford School of Art as a teenager. At London's Royal College of Art in the early 1960s, he worked in a style that combined figuration, abstraction, and text, which identified him with the British Pop art movement. His work, however, defies categorization. It consists of still lifes and portraits rendered with delicacy and frankness and, after moving to Los Angeles, has included bold, colourful images of California's sun-drenched settings. Rooted in his personal relationships, his homosexuality, and his literary interests and travels, Hockney's art is, above all, deeply autobiographical. Printmaking has played a central role in Hockney's practice, and many of his most significant early works take the form of narrative print series. The linearity of etching matches his natural inclination for drawing, and lithography allows him to explore dazzling colour. He has also made editions with paper pulp and inventive prints using a photocopy machine. In all Hockney has created more than five hundred prints, collaborating with celebrated printers and workshops in Europe and America and also experimenting on his own. A copy of the print is in the Museum of Modern Art.Condition report: Condition is good overall, with no visible signs of restoration, damage, or known issues. Additional images have been uploaded to our website. Picture comes from a Private Scottish Collection.

David Hockney OM, CH, RA (b.1937) "Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy” Signed and dated (19)76, numbered 67/96, lithograph, 71cm by 94cm Provenance: Jonathan Silver Collection, Salts Mill, YorkshireFootnote: Born in Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1937, David Hockney is one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. A painter, printmaker, stage designer and photographer, Hockney’s many talents have earned him world-wide recognition.Hockney studied at the Royal College of Art in London, during which time he was a part of the Young Contemporaries exhibition, which declared the arrival of the British Pop Art movement. He was just 26 when he had his first solo exhibition in 1963 and went onto exhibit in over 400 solo exhibitions and 500 group exhibitions, including a major show at the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2006 in which over 150 works created over five decades were exhibited. Hockney has been awarded multiple awards throughout his life, beginning with the John Moores Painting Prize in 1967. He has been a Royal Academician since 1985 and in 2012 he was appointed to The Order of Merit for his contribution to the arts and sciences. Throughout his long career Hockney has experimented with a variety of mediums, from traditional painting and printmaking to the use of fax machines and iPads, capturing a wide range of subject matter. He is perhaps most widely recognised for photo collages and a series of paintings of swimming pools he created following a move to Los Angeles in 1964, inspired by vibrant Californian colour and light. Portraiture has been a constant throughout his career, capturing the most important figures in his life and incorporating personal elements of both his life and his sitters’.The sheer variety of subject and media which he has explored throughout his career, executed with wit, charm and panache, has enabled him to create striking forms and intriguing concepts that have inspired legions of admirers.Condition report: Float mounted and has a deckled edge. § Patrick Procktor RA (British 1936-2003) Mo - Ecce Homosigned 'Patrick Procktor' (lower right); titled and dated 78 to the reverseoil on canvas24.5 x 17cm Footnote: Executed in 1978, the present lot depicts Mo McDermott, a long-term friend, model, and assistant to David Hockney. In addition to his association with Hockney, McDermott is also credited with introducing Celia Birtwell to Ossie Clark. Together with Clark, Birtwell and Hockney, McDermott became the centre of what was described as the “Northern Invasion” of the Swinging London. The subtitle of Procktor’s painting, Ecce Homo, from the Latin ‘behold the man’, traditionally refers to images depicting the suffering of Christ and recalls the mocking words of Pontius Pilate before condemning Jesus to crucifixion. A popular theme in Baroque art, Procktor’s 1978 portrait offers a modern, secular rendering of the theme. Whilst McDermott is not conceived as a Christ-like figure, the human skull placed in the foreground functions as a memento mori to remind the viewer of man’s mortality.Condition report: The surface a little dirty and with some small brown accretions. The left hand edge of the canvas shows a small dent and resulting paint loss. There are some fine cracks to the paint layer located on the sitter's chin, shoulder and a longer crack (approx 6cm) on the sitter's left arm. Would benefit from a light clean, otherwise good.

Lot 163

A group of eight postcard size cartoons circa 1940 illustrated by Richard Bayer during his time in detention at the Huyton Prisoner of War camp. Sold together with a small poetry booklet 'Gesang der Geister über den Wassern' (Song of the Spirits over the Waters) with a hand-written introduction and dry-point etchings, plus one further illustration drawn on government toilet paper marked 'Government Property'. Notes: Richard Franz Bayer (1901-1900) was a painter, illustrator and teacher at Bradford Grammar School. Born in Austria, Bayer's years leading up to the Second World War were ones of increasing political activity. His political cartoons for newspapers, attendance of secret Anti-Nazi meetings, involvement in protest marches and taking over the leadership of 4,000 Social Democrat teenagers in the youth movement soon saw him come into conflict with the right-wing government. After Hitler's annexation of Austria, Richard not only lost his teaching job but faced arrest and imprisonment. His wife, Frances, and their daughter, Liza, had previously escaped to England with the help of the Quaker movement. Richard followed them in 1939, only a month prior to the declaration of war with Britain. He later said that he was carrying a pistol in case of interception, with "the first five bullets intended for the Nazis and the last one for himself". Although Bayer initially found work teaching at a school in Hertfordshire, this was considered a Protected Area and he was soon detained and interned at Huyton Camp near Liverpool as a possible 'dangerous alien'. It was here that Richard continued to employ his artistic skills by designing satirical postcards about life in the camp alongside commentary about the war. In total, he produced over 70 different cartoons, which were copied and resulted in 5000 postcards. These cards were passed around the camp to be used by the detainees for communication and as a record of their confinement. After a few months and Huyton's loyalty to Britain was established, Richard moved to London where he worked as a sign-writer and poster-maker for the cinema industry. In 1941, he took a teaching post at Bradford Grammar School as an art master, where he stayed until 1966. It was during this period that David Hockney was a pupil, with Bayer becoming Hockney's tutor, mentor and lifelong friend. With thanks to The ARK (Archive Resource for Knowsley) for kindly aiding the research for this lot. For interest, a copy of Bayer's intern card has been uploaded to the website but is not present with this lot.
