Ca. 1st–2nd Century AD.A marble panel featuring a relief scene of a male figure leading a subdued lion. The man is barefoot and nude from the waist up and turned 3/4 to the viewer, displaying a muscular physique. He rests his left hand on a majestic lion with a lowered tail and a gently raised head. Background elements include a semi-circular metal grate attached to a stone-brick wall, perhaps the cage for the lion which would suggest the frieze depicts the machinations of the Roman arena. The reverse side is flat an unworked, suggesting that this piece sat on a wall. Item comes with a professional historical report from Ancient Report Specialists. Size: 360mm x 300mm; Weight: 17.38kg Provenance: Property of a London gentleman; Ex. French collection, Paris, Parisian Gallery, 1970-90. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.

A 'FOUR AUSPICIOUS BEASTS' (SI XIANG) BRONZE BRAZIER, HAN DYNASTY, CHINA, 206 BC-220 AD 西元前206至西元220年青銅火盆The upper section is finely cast in openwork relief and depicts the animal-spirits of the four cardinal directions, also called the 'four auspicious beasts': the Azure Dragon of the East (qinglong), the White Tiger of the West (bai hu), the Vermilion Bird of the South (zhuque), and the Tortoise entwined with a snake symbolizing the Dark Warrior of the North (xuanwu).An earcup would be placed atop this brazier, its oval form fitting perfectly on top of the four protrusions on the brazier's rim. The main rectangular section is stepped and raised on four crouching humanoid supports, each neatly modeled, and has an openwork grate to the base. A flattened handle at one end curves up to a leaf-shaped terminal.Provenance: An old private collection in the United Kingdom. Christie's London, 6 July 1983, lot 108, sold for GBP 8,100 or approx. Michael Michaels (1907-1986) was born in Magdeburg, Germany, fleeing to the United Kingdom in 1933 when the Nazis came to power in Germany. As a young refugee, Michaels worked at a raincoat factory until founding his own tent and camping equipment company in London with his wife Charlotte. With the success of his company, Michaels began to pursue his passion in antiquities, traveling the globe and visiting museums and archeological sites. During his time in London, Michaels spent countless hours in the British Museum, learning from Jessica Rawson and growing his understanding of the history and technology behind different material cultures. He assembled a very large and important collection of Chinese bronzes during his lifetime. Condition: Superb condition, commensurate with age, with old wear and expected casting irregularities. Signs of weathering and erosion with minor losses, cracks and dents. The rich, naturally grown patina has fine malachite and azurite encrustations overall.Weight: 725 g Dimensions: Length 24.2 cm At the heart of Chinese mythology are the four spiritual creatures, or four celestial emblems, Si Xiang, each of them being most closely associated with a cardinal direction and a color, but also additionally representing other aspects, including a season of the year, an emotion, a virtue, and one of the five Chinese elements. Each has been given its own individual traits, origin story and its reason for being. Depictions of mythological creatures clearly ancestral to the modern set have been found throughout China. Currently, the oldest known depiction was discovered in 1987 in a tomb in Xishuipo, Henan, which has been dated to approximately 5300 BC. With Interesting Inventory of Contents, 1772 Co. Dublin:  Lease of a House and Lands. Indenture on vellum (2 large membranes), dated 2 April, 1772 in which Thomas Burroughs of Dublin grants to John Adlercron of same, a lease for lives of part of Newtown, Co Dublin, together with his dwelling house, etc. Details of bounds given. Tenant is to spend £200 “on making a good and sufficient addition of lime and stone to the said dwelling house”. Curious schedule attached listing specific items in the house: marble and stone chimney pieces, landscape panels, kitchen grate, “A Large Copper Boyler, and “A Large Marble Rowling Stone with an Iron frame in the Garden”. A well-engineered Gauge 3 (2½") live steam LMS 'Compound' 4-4-0 Locomotive and Tender by Mike Pavie (3), to design by M Pavie and built in January 2005, with grate fitted for coal-firing (but without ashpan), the model with just the two outside cylinders and inside motion, lever reverse from cab, axle-driven water pump and hand-pump to tender, pressure and water gauges, regulator (free) and blower valve to cab, finished to professional standards in LMS crimson as No. 1000, with a Gauge 3 Society initial hydraulic boiler test certificate dated 15/3/05, appears never steamed, VG-E (3 inc bag with certificate and loose parts)
