An Aesthetic Movement cast-iron, tiled and pine chimneypiece the design attributed to Thomas Jeckyll and the manufacture attributed to Barnard, Bishop and Barnards of Norwich and London, with 15 (of 17) Minton, Hollins & Co tiles, painted in black and red with birds and flowers, 133cm h, 143cm w, the throat of the grate inscribed REGISTERED TRADE MARK "THE ABBOTSFORD" the fire bars with lozenge shaped registration mark for 22.2.1878 (see illustration) ++ The surviving tiles in good condition apart from one with an edge chip on the lowest left side and some a little rubbed, the iron with localised areas of light rust which could be easily removed. The pine surround previously painted and affected by longterm storage in damp conditions. Lacking two spindles from either end but a rare survival
A late 19th century brass and cast iron fire grate the back cast with an urn the pierced serpentine frieze decorated with flutes and patera the embossed brackets with garrya on square tapering legs headed by urn finials 78cm high x 78cm wide.
