Lot 284

An impressive George III carved white marble chimneypiecepossibly Irishthe moulded shelf above a twin panelled frieze, flanked by kneeling figures of Venus within scallop shells, the central tablet with a recumbent figure of Neptune drawn by two hippocampi, the moulded legs before free standing plain doric columns on socle and square bases, the inner aperture inset with a later matched cast iron and polished brass register grate, with later black marble insets and hearth, 139cm high overall (136cm high to the base of the freestanding columns when resting on the later hearth sections); 213cm wide; 46cm deep approximately; the inner aperture: 98cm high x 110cm wide approximately.Footnotes:ProvenanceRaheen House, Raheen, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, Southern Ireland. By repute, the chimneypiece was installed at Raheen House by the then owners of the house, the Burke family, circa 1889, when they apparently acquired it in lieu of a part payment for a warehouse. This commercial building was purchased by the Loreto Convent of Clonmel to be used as a religious school when their own school was damaged by fire. The Loreto Convent were an order of Cistercian nuns originally founded by Mary Ward (1584-1645) to further the higher education of Catholic women. In her own lifetime Mary Ward established religious schools all over Europe, although the Clonmel Convent school was not set up until 1881. The school was located next to the Suir Island Flour Mill and it was this building, possibly a private residence, that was damaged by fire in 1889 which is most likely the reason why this chimneypiece was removed and subsequently offered as a part payment to the Burke family. However it is possible that the chimneypiece, given its elegance and grandeur may have been brought to Clonmel from a previous location – either from the Loreto Orders Convent school in Dublin or possibly even gifted by a rich Irish or English benefactor. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: TPTP For auctions held in Scotland: Lots will be moved to an offsite storage location (Constantine, Constantine House, North Caldeen Road, Coatbridge ML5 4EF, Scotland, UK) and will only be available for collection from this location at the date stated in the catalogue.
