Mappamondo terraqueo firmato “Amicino Ravizza a Cremona, 1799, Altezza cm 100, diametro cm 90 Nel cartiglio, entro cartella, le scritte: "Globo Terraqueo / Secondo le più recenti scoperte ed / i Viaggi di Cook, l' Haerne, di Filips / Vancoure (--------------) e Pioiset, etc. / delineato da Amicino Ravizza / L' Anno 1799 in Cremona". Questo raro globo terrestre, montato sull’originale mobile a colonnette tornite a rocchetto raccordate da un elegante gioco di traverse sagomate e modanate, è interamente dipinto ad olio. Andrà segnalato che di norma i mappamondi erano rivestiti da incisioni montate a spicchio, poi variamente acquarellate. L’aver dipinto a mano ogni dettaglio geografico e topografico, implica un lavoro di per sé monumentale. Amicino Ravizza (Cremona, 1757c. - Cremona, 20 marzo 1815). Il globo è firmato Amicino Ravizza. Eccellente matematico, cosmografo, costruttore di strumenti astronomici ed esperto orologiaio, il Ravizza ricoprì fino alla morte la cattedra di matematica superiore nel Reale Ginnasio di Cremona. Il suo nome è in particolare legato al riadeguamento (nel 1787) del computo orario su indici europei dell'antico, complesso e celebre orologio della torre maggiore di Cremona (detto il Torrazzo), originariamente posto in opera nel 1583 da Giovanni Battista e Giovanni Francesco Dovizioli. Concepito con ripetizione a ore sei (all'italiana), l'intervento del Ravizza sostituì le vecchie 24 ore con il computo a 12 + 12, ponendo in alto il mezzogiorno e in basso la mezzanotte; rimosse le indicazioni astrologiche, il moto dei corpi celesti venne corretto secondo le indicazioni della specola di Brera. Vennero mantenute le indicazioni delle fasi lunari e la posizione del sole nello zodiaco e tutte le indicazioni relative al tempo. Il Ravizza rimase poi per molti anni moderatore dell'orologio, apponendovi nel 1804 ulteriori riparazioni (di poco rilievo). Di li a breve il Ravizza diede alle stampe l'opuscolo "Descrizione ed utilizzo del planisfero della torre maggiore di Cremona rinnovato l'anno 1787", edito nel 1788 dal Ferrari e dedicato ai fabbriceri della Cattedrale. Particolare nomea ebbe il Ravizza anche per l'invenzione di una macchina di divisione ideata sui principi di Eamsden (del diametro di due piedi), che presentata ed esposta nel 1810 nella sala della Reale Accademia delle Belle Arti di Milano, gli valse l'assegnazione della medaglia d'oro. Morì nella natia Cremona il 20 marzo del 1815, in fama di grande erudito. I suoi studi di meccanica applicata ai planisferi e ai corpi siderei lo resero in particolare rinomato costruttore di complessi mappamondi e strumenti astronomici. Nelle schede del Data Bank di Abacus Arte, in merito a questo mappamondo, si scrive: “Esemplificativo in tal senso è l'importante planisfero terrestre eseguito dal Ravizza nel 1799 e comparso in asta Semenzato il 21 novembre 1998, la cui cartella recita "Globo Terraqueo / Secondo le più recenti scoperte ed / i Viaggi di Cook, l' Haerne, di Filips / Vancoure (--------------) e Pioiset, etc. / delineato da Amicino Ravizza / L' Anno 1799 in Cremona". E' questa un’opera di complessa ideazione, corredata dalla precisazione delle rotte dei grandi navigatori, completata con le costellazioni astrologiche e, a differenza di quasi ogni globo terrestre, inscena l'inusuale particolarità di essere condotto con pittura a mano, in luogo delle solite applicazioni incise a stampa. Questo mappamondo, oggi in collezione privata, era originariamente collocato al centro del antico e noto salone degli stucchi (o gipsoteca) di Villa Gandolfo a Bazzano nei pressi di Bologna, il cui rilievo storico e artistico degli arredi scultorei meritò la notifica dello Stato”. Al centro raffigurata l’immagine di Santa Caterina da Genova. La nostra opera è strettamente correlata con un analogo esemplare datato 1760 (?) pubblicato da Gianna Roccatagliata su Argenti genovesi che così lo descrive:”...La rappresentazione di Santa Caterina è realizzata con uno sbalzo talmente rilevato, che la figura “esce” per quasi tre quarti dal contesto della scena su di uno sfondo puntinato. L’iconografia è quella tradizionale derivata dalla pittura e dalle incisioni; il contorno asimmetrico, con tipici motivi del barocchetto genovese, nella sua elegante esecuzione, conferisce al pezzo un effetto di grandissima plasticità unita ad una raffinata fantasia decorativa” Cm 29x21, gr. 320 circa, Cfr.: “Argenti genovesi” G.
