Limited edition, numbered 368/750. The Golden Cockerel Press is one of the twentieth century's most regarded presses, credited with a significant contribution to the revival of English woodcut illustration. The two works here showcase both the quality of artists and the quality of book production for which the press was justly famous. John Buckland-Wright was a New Zealander who helped William Hayter found Aetelier 17 in Paris, at which he worked with artists such as Matisse, Chagall, Picasso and Dali. Mark Severin was a Belgian artist and graphic designer. He specialised in miniature work, producing hundreds of bookplates, many erotic. The press frequently found expression through the ancient world, drawing on both the sensuous nature of myths for their content, and their classical status to distance themselves from accusations of obscenity.
