Chateau Mouton Rothschild -- 1989 Chateau Mouton Rothschild 1er Grand Cru Classe Pauillac Bordeaux. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.

Omar El-Nagdi (Egypt, 1931-2019)Gaza oil on canvas, four panelssigned and dated, executed in 2009250 x 900cm (98 7/16 x 354 5/16in).250 x 225 cm per panelFootnotes:A MONUMENTAL NINE METRE QUADTYCH BY OMAR EL NAGDI DEPICTING THE 2009 GAZA WARProvenance:Property from the Artist's EstateExhibited:Arts-Mart Gallery, Omar El Nagdi: Fragments of a Luminary Cairo, February-March 2016 This monumental and highly significant painting captures the unimaginable hardship, fear and anguish of the Palestinian civilians during the Gaza War which was also better known in the Muslim world as the Gaza Massacre. This three-week armed conflict between The Israeli Defence Forces and the Gaza Strip Palestinian paramilitary groups began on the 27th of December 2008 and ended on the 18th of January 2009 with a unilateral ceasefire. The unrelenting attack on Gaza resulted in over a thousand Palestinian and thirteen Israeli deaths. Omar El-Nagdi found the persecution and the brutal assault on his Palestinian brothers and sisters deeply unsettling and distressing. The ongoing massacres by the Israelis, deeply affected the Egyptian artist and urged him to react to these monstrosities by impulsively expressing himself in this profound composition. Suffering has been an enduring theme in art for centuries, and the tradition of painting violence, pain and oppression has long been a source of expression for artists experiencing conflict. The artist communicates a deep and painful reality; this painting serves as a reminder and reflections of Palestinian history and the ongoing struggle. The historic moment of the 1948 Palestinian exodus also known as the Nakba in Arabic led to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of children and the ongoing war left many casualties. Towering and striking, the present work was painted two months after the conflict ended in 2009 and is one of the finest examples of the artist reacting almost concurrently to the world around him. A seminal piece of artistic activism, in the vein of some of the greatest recorded works in history like Picasso's 'Guernica' and Goya's 'Disasters of War'. In his treatment of conflict, Nagdi clearly recalls Goya, whose set of 82 etchings were inspired by the scarring effect of the Franco-Spanish Peninsular War of 1807.Whilst divergent in form and composition, what Nagdi absorbs from Goya is the jarred, fragmented aesthetic that reflects the tumult of wartime discord. Goya was said to capture scenes in 'agonised haste', and accordingly, the idea of the turbulence of conflict depicted with a ghoulish, monster like aesthetic is heavily incorporated in Nagdi's work. El-Nagdi transcribes literally the chaos of war, isolating each disproportioned figure onto the canvas yet bringing them all together through the agony expressed in their faces.Hopelessness, grief and despair are apparent in the body language of the men, women and children seen in this work. His figures, or rather creatures, appear inhuman and resemble fictional characters rather than people, showing how the sufferings and torturing of war has stripped them bare of their humanity and dignity. Each movement, each body part and each facial expression screams out from the canvas; the hands reaching out in despair and the frightened bulging eyes of the helpless victims.Omar El Nagdi was born in Cairo in 1931 and studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Helwan University. Nagdi continued his training in Russia and Italy, eventually graduating from the Academy of Venice in 1967. A prodigious pioneer in Egyptian art history, In the 1960s, Nagdi exhibited in Europe alongside the Western masters Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. His works were soon after acquired by leading institutions around the world. An active member of Cairo's art community and of the Liberal Artists' group headed by Taha Hussein, Nagdi was an extraordinary painter and who equally excelled as a film director and music composer.A multi-disciplinary artist, Nagdi worked with sculpture, oil, watercolour and mosaics. Inspired by the diverse cultures that he encountered in rural Egypt, he fused in his works the Pharaonic and Islamic iconography with Cairo's urban culture idioms and Western aesthetics. His works visually enigmatic and captivating and inspired by folk art and traditions are reflections on everyday life in Egypt. His paintings are sufficient proof of his exceptional gifts for symbolic design and the splendid use of colour. Through his expressive textures, colours and symbolic elements, his works offer a communication that is deeply felt. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ** VAT on imported items at a preferential rate of 5% on Hammer Price and the prevailing rate on Buyer's Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Tributed as one of Greece's most diverse and celebrated artists of the postwar Ecole de Paris,1 the artist travelled to the United States in 1968 to spend a six-month period in New York City with his young American fiancée. Inspired by his new love, he threw his energy and excitement into an outstanding and joyous, if limited, series of vivid canvases that explore the abstracted human form with a new emphasis on colour. Musical instruments are symbolic and reoccurring in all phases of the artist's career as an expression of joy.1 From 1947 onward, Nonda lived and worked in Paris, exhibiting primarily with the Galerie Charpentier. He also showed in the annual Grand Palais Salons alongside such towering figures as Braque, Picasso, Leger, Buffet, Chagall, de Chirico, and Dali. This lot is subject to the following lot symbols: ARAR Goods subject to Artists Resale Right Additional Premium. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com

Equality circa 1965oil on canvas76 x 92 cm (29 7/8 x 36 1/4 in.)framed dimensions: 90 x 105 cm (35 3/8 x 41 3/8 in.)signed on stretcher, possibly in another handLOT ESSAYThe pioneering Afro-American comic-book illustrator, poet, painter and educator Alvin Carl Hollingsworth was born in Harlem in 1928 to Barbadian emigrants. He began his career, aged twelve, as an artist assistant at Holyoke Publishing Company for Catman's Comics. He continued working in comics throughout the 1940s and 50s before transitioning to painting and printmaking. With his background in commercial illustration, Hollingsworth was an experienced draftsman with an eye for bold colors and compositions, who oscillated seamlessly between styles, genres, media, and influences as diverse as Henry Ossawa Tanner and Gustave Dore to contemporaries Salvador Dali, Tom Wesselman and Nicholas de Stael.Equality evidently dates to Hollingsworth’s early painting years, characterized by naturalistic modelling and earthy color palettes with fluorescent accents, as well as an interest in found materials and urban life (or, the social inequalities it perpetuates). It is closely related to the artist’s most notable body of work from the period: a series entitled Cry City, the subject of a solo exhibition at Terry Dintenfass Gallery. Using material salvaged from the streets — tar paper the artist found on tenement roofs; fishbones, broken cement, stones, teeth and bits of glass — Hollingsworth presented the city as a psychologically and physically difficult terrain (John H. Hewitt, “The Themes of Alvin C. Hollingsworth,†Black Art – An International Quarterly 2:1 (1977): 5).Compared with the sober, alienated character of many paintings from this time, Equality is rather more emotionally inscrutable. Here, the blackboard — evidently bearing a lesson on the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution — has already been partly erased, and class appears to be in recess. Space is collapsed, figures disjointed. Superimposed over the right side of the board is a portrait of a 19th century man in a European military uniform, whose implied gaze looms over the sea of racially ambiguous but pale faces streaming this way and that. The frontality of the man’s portrait is repeated by the two boys at the lower corners of the frame, but they too don't make direct eye contact with the viewer or the figures around them. (Hollingsworth used a similar composition and narrative device in Group of Children, also circa 1965, sold by Swann Galleries, October 8, 2009, lot 55). Equality, however, shares in the dynamism of Jacob Lawrence’s Migration Series, and perhaps also its reticent optimism for the future.Hollingsworth attributes the crystallizing of social issues in works from the 1960s to his involvement with Spiral, a Black artist’s collective founded by Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, Hale Woodruff and James Yeargans. A dozen or so members initially gathered in Bearden’s and Charles Alson’s shared Greenwich Village studio in July 1963 to discuss the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, planned for August 28th. Realizing their galvanizing potential went beyond the scope of the march, the group began planning their first (and only) group exhibition: “Spiral: First Group Showing (works in black and white)â€, which ran in May-June 1965 at a rented Christopher St. storefront. (Black and white was chosen both as a universal political appeal and an organizing principle, since Spiral’s members did not share any specific aesthetic sensibility). Though the group was active for some two and a half years, their praxis and unifying outlook were enormously influential on future generations of artists. (This contribution was the subject of a 2011 show, Spiral: Perspectives on an African-American Art Collective, at the Studio Museum in Harlem).Between 1960 and 1970, Hollingsworth expanded his reach to muralism and lithography, as well as hosted a popular ten-part series for NBC titled "You're Part of Art". From 1980 until his retirement in 1998, he was a full Professor of Art at Hostos Community College of the City University of New York. Hollingsworth’s role during the Golden Age of Comic Books has recently been covered by Ken Quattro in Invisible Men: The Trailblazing Black Artists of Comic Books (San Diego: YOE Books/IDW Publishing, 2020).CONDITIONObserved in frame, the painting is in good condition.
