Der "Elephant Spatial" wurde ursprünglich von Dali als Motiv für das Gemälde von 1946 "Die Versuchung des Heiligen Antonius" entwickelt. Der in der Folge immer wieder thematisierte Elefant mit seinen langen Spindelbeinen galt dem Künstler als mystisches Wesen mit symbolischer Stellung zwischen Himmel und Erde.
